Ubuntu :: GRUB Loading Error - Laptop Dead - Stuck At Error Message

Feb 21, 2010

I been running both OS's for a few months now with no major problems besides wireless internet issues. Today, however, as I go to boot my laptop up, the Dell logo loads with the F2 and F12 boot and setup options which both work. Directly after that though I get the message "GRUB loading. Symbol '?' not found. Aborted. Press any key to Exit." then it repeats when I push a key, and then it tells me to press F1 to retry, F2 to go to setup, or F5 to run diagnostics. It passes all the tests in diagnostics. I've tried booting off of the ubuntu cd I used to load it initially with no luck. So I'm stuck at either that error message or in setup but I can't go any further, and it does not change anything when I tried to boot from the cd.

Fedora :: Xwindows Crash After Reboot?

Oct 19, 2009

after playing games using WINE, I noticed that the system went Black screen of death.

I had to hard boot the system and now system is hanging. However, I can ssh into the system from another machine so I know only X windows hung.

I can log in using NX client without any issue, but can not log in from the console.

This is the entry from .xsession-errors:
GNOME_KEYRING_SOCKET=/tmp/keyring-4P86Nb/socket
SSH_AUTH_SOCK=/tmp/keyring-4P86Nb/socket.ssh

Fedora :: F15 Works But Causes Next Reboot (into Any OS) To Crash?

Jul 19, 2011

I haven't seen anything like it before. I have F15 installed dual-boot with Windows Vista, and I've updated packages. Booting into F15 works fine, no issues.

However: if I shut down and reboot into either (a) Windows or (b) even just the BIOS config screen, the system crashes abruptly after about 1 minute (with no warning/error) and tries to reboot. Booting straight back into F15 sometimes seems to cause the issue, but not always.

The reboot then fails, it doesn't even get to BIOS screen - all that happens is disk lights (HDD, DVD-ROM) keep thrashing. Manual reboot (hold power button for 4 seconds until shutdown; press power button to restart) doesn't help; reboot still stalls. Only disconnecting from mains power, reconnecting, and rebooting works.

It might not even be a Fedora issue - I've tried recent Ubuntu and Mint 11 live CDs, and they cause the same problem - but I'm posting here since I like my F15 installation and want to keep it I've noted that older distros on live CD (eg. F14, SuSe 11.3) don't seem to cause this problem. Maybe a recent kernel issue?

How can something in F15 persist across soft reboot and crash a completely different OS?

General :: Fedora 14 - Stuck At Post Installation Process

Feb 7, 2011

I am pretty new to Linux OS's, but I have gone through the process of installing linux onto several of my system already. The problem I am having is when I attempt to install Fedora 14 onto my Unbuntu 10.10 (erasing Unbuntu to be specific) I am stuck at the Post-Installation process.
I am using a CD-RW to install Fedora onto my Ubuntu, and I installed Ubuntu onto the computer originally with another CD-R.

I assume this usually takes a few minutes, as the pop-up says that it may take several, but it has been several hours with no progress. I was pretty far into the installation when the pop up appeared, and it said:
"Post-Installation: Performing post-installation filesystem changes. This may take several minutes.".
As I said, it has been several hours.

Fedora :: Yum Update Install New Kernel - Boot Process Stuck

Mar 24, 2010

I'm not sure what caused it, but it happened right after running 'yum update'. It may be because it installed a new kernel, and there are now two kernels listed in my grub.conf and at boot; 2.6.31 and 2.6.32. System boots through a list of things it's starting up and stalls out at ATL or ADL or ADM maybe. It hangs there for a minute or so then flickers. This happens every time at boot. It's a bit difficult to post more information since I can't get past that part of the boot process, and I can't seem to be able to skip it either. It may be worth mentioning that this is a mini-itx motherboard. Intel Atom 330 1.6, 2GB DDR2, onboard GeForce 9400m. It's a zotac ionitx-a-u. I've installed a fresh copy of Fedora 12 lxde.

Fedora :: Scrolling Text During Boot Process Instead Of 'loading Bar'?

Jun 4, 2009

This doesnt really bother me at all, Im more curious than anything but- When I first installed fedora 9, during startup there was a bootsplash during the boot process. When the kernal was updated, the bootsplash was replaced with scrolling text (I have done several kernal updates, it was after the first one the scrolling text happened). Is there a way of reverting back to the bootsplash or is it more trouble than what its worth?

Fedora :: 13 On Laptop Compiz Crash Report

Oct 28, 2010

just installed Fedora 13 on a pentium 4 laptop by Dell, with 1 Gb RAM.

As I opt for Compiz, it cannot start, there is a black pop up saying Crash, and some numbers follow. How can this be fixed?

Should I install KDE?

Is there an update of software?

I can opt for Compiz but worry that it will be faulty. That is the second attempt also produced the crash warning pop up but gave me the option of keeping it or going back after about twenty seconds, with the figures on the screen. I played it safe. Also can I try it, and manually go back?

Error report shows Compiz killed by Signal 11 SIGSEGV, this was added after post 9.

Fedora Hardware :: Laptop - Disable The Touchpad Until Reboot

Apr 23, 2011

I have installed gpointing-device-settings. It does exactly what I want it to do, disable the touchpad, until I reboot (not sure about logging out/in) and the touchpad is again enabled. So the vicious circle continues and I disable it for the session. Back in the days of xorg.conf it was easy enough to disable but of course that file, and the option to disable from within that file no longer exists for me. When I use Debian I can modprobe -r psmouse. That was a perfect solution as the touchpad was never heard from again with regard to that distribution. Attempting to remove that module under Fedora 15 results in the following.

Code: [glenn@f15beta ~>$ sudo modprobe -r psmouse FATAL: Module psmouse is builtin Is this something that I can change? I assume that built-in means that it's built in to the kernel? How about this angle. When I use gpointing-device-settings to toggle the touchpad on/off there must be one or more files that are altered. How easy would it be to find out exactly what files are altered and could I possibly set the immutable flag on this file so that it never gets toggled back to enabled again? There is a function key on this laptop, F9, that looks like it toggles the touchpad but it doesn't work under Fedora 15. Never tried it in any other releases.

Fedora Installation :: Laptop Doesnt Load After The First Reboot After Install?

May 10, 2010

I have laptop ASUS X51RL with Intel pentium dual core inside processor. As mentioned here:I tried to install i386 FC12 on it. When the instalation was completed, there was a message to reboot. So did I, and while the BIOS was still loading, of course, removed the DVD in order not to repeat the instalation. Fedora started loading with the three varioants of the blue color bars and suddenly on the screenappeared a long message finishing with the words: "kernel panic - not syncing: fatal exception in interrupt " and that was all - the system stopped untillo there and never loaded For the last 2 days this is about my 12th attempt to get linux. Before I had tried about over 6 times with ubuntu, finishing the same way after the first reboot, 1 time knoppix and 2 times Debian. Only debian succeeded to load succesfully after its instaltion was complete, but I didnt linke it and a friend of mine strongly recommended me FC12. So what am I supposed to do??? I guarentee, my hard disc is not corruted as I read 1 hundred times on google, I had benn running windows 7 before I started trying to get linux and everything was OK... the install DVD is also OK, I tested it in the same beginning of the instalation and the test was successfull.

Ubuntu :: Won't Start - Stuck At Loading Screen

Jan 5, 2011

I simply installed 5 or 6 various packages and shutdown the laptop, later I opened it and turned it on GRUB came up as usual showing the usual options, I selected the option I always pick and Ubuntu came up as usual with the progress bar of 5 or 6 dots that show the typical progress bar but it stays like this forever. I tested it for up to 3 hours it didn't budge.

I tried selecting the recovery option from the GRUB menu and it appears to load normally with a bunch of console output but then halts with the last message displaying:

Code:
cloud-init start-local running Wed, 05 Jan 2011 20:43:44 -0600. up 14.26 seconds
no instance data found in start local init: cloud-init-local main process (357) terminated with status 1

But before the message there was a lot of warnings that appeared to trail off as there were so many, here is an example of one of them as they all appear to be the same just different rule numbers, this is also the last one before the error:

Code:
udevd[353]: SYSFS{}= will be removed in a future udev version, please use ATTR{}= to match the event device, or ATTRS{}= to match a parent device, in /etc/udev/rules.d/99-sbig.rules:59

I followed Psychocats' guide for "pure Ubuntu" but after rebooting, Ubuntu just hangs on the loading screen (or during 'checking battery state'). I tried booting in recovery mode but I'm unable to navigate the menu: when I press a direction key it alternates between the menu and the Ubuntu loading screen. Several other keys do the same thing, while the rest do nothing.

Debian :: PACKAGE MANAGER Crash - Stuck - Dead - How To Reset Or Clear Repositories

May 15, 2011

The package manager is scrambled in my Ubuntu 11.04. It started with the repositories list being scrambled with multiple entries. Now when the Package Manager is launched it just accesses the hard drive forever. I did give it a half an hour just in case so it clearly stuck in a loop of some kind.

What I'd like to know is: Is there some way to reset, clear, turn off or de-select the added Repositories list from the command line (terminal.) This seems to be the only way since the Package Manager gets stuck. Keep in mind that I'm only slightly competent with Linux and have no idea where the Debian Package Manager data is located or how it works. If I go poking around without at least some guidance I may make things worse.

The problem seems to be spreading. Got stuck again while saving this message. Turned off the system, rebooted to recovery mode and did a file system check. Okay for now. Switching to clean OS on other partition.

I'll check for answers there but it's only Ubuntu 10.04 and I'd very much prefer to have 11.04 working and not have an effectively dead partition and don't want to loose everything on it with a re-format and 2 day re-install process (no installation disk.)

Ubuntu :: Fails To Reboot After Updates Gets Stuck In Grub?

Mar 9, 2010

Just installed Ubuntu a month ago (installed within windows), and for the 2nd time it has gotten stuck in grub upon restart after doing an automatic update. Last time, I reinstalled from the CD, but I can't do that every time. Learning how to start up from grub would probably be worth learning so I don't have to use the CD. But fixing the problem is most important. It makes me wonder if it was a mistake to install Ubuntu from within Windows (does this mean I have "wubu"?). I did find a webpage on booting Ubuntu from grub, but I could not get the kernel to load, regardless of if I used the instructions for wubu or not.

General :: RT Process Stuck As Runnable 'R' / But Never Executes

Jul 28, 2011

I have a hard to reproduce (seen a couple times in a month) issue where my program seems like it is hung (not increasing in cputime), however, it is in the runnable state and never gets to run. The cpus are 99% idle according to vmstat and the load is 5 (which is equal to the number of threads in my program that are in the R state) according to ps, and there are no processes on the system in the 'D' state. The other major oddity is that one of the migration threads has a cputime usage almost equal to the uptime of the system. Typically migration threads have a cputime on the order of seconds across hundreds of days of uptime, but in this case the migration thread has DAYS of cputime according to ps.

The last time this happened, I went around saving as much /proc/X information that I could into logs for referring to later, before I had to reboot the box to get it running back to normal. (because in this state, a kill -9 is not heeded by my program)Does anyone have any idea what could cause this? I am not sure if this is a scheduling bug or a bug in my program (the likelier case).I have a wealth of logs to look through if anyone can suggest something specific to look for.
