View 1 RepliesThis was my first experience with Ubuntu, I was told to switch the hard drives on my computer and put the Windows drive in a safe place for the install. The first time I did the install on the hard drive (which was the clean second hard drive that came with my computer), I either didn't realize I believe I didn't realize I had to click a button and thought the install had gotten stuck, and therefore cut off the install midway through. The second time around the install went without a hitch, and I was able to boot to desktop once. There, I was notified that I needed/should install NVIDIA drivers, I believe version 173 was listed as the next most recent drives (the other was "current"), I have an NVIDIA GeForce 7350LE graphics card, and after installing the drivers, I went to the restart menu as directed and clicked restart, not shut down but restart, and there were several listed errors on the text/DOS screen, shutdown errors I believe (the errors were 5 digits and were something like 56759 or something like that, I can't be certain if I'm remembering right, though, but there were two errors going over again). I then proceeded to turn off the computer manually, and upon it coming on again, instead of the normal Ubuntu flash screen before login, a more choppy Ubuntu 10.10 screen popped up and it led me to the DOS mode, where I was able to login, but it did me no good because I don't know command logic for Ubuntu. The best I did (its the best I ever do when these things happen) is get menus to pop up that are basically useless. I turned the computer off and on again three times, and tried booting directly from disk, but that failed.
I'm actually using the same computer I just reinserted the Windows drive back in after the frustrating experience. Windows has been giving me problems itself, and I really wanted to switch to Ubuntu but I need to know that this is a fluke and not the norm. I can live with this sort of thing being so uncommon I must have did something that was very strange and out of the ordinary to my computer. But if its commonplace, I want to know that too, because that's just something I can't live with.

I had to hard boot the system and now system is hanging. However, I can ssh into the system from another machine so I know only X windows hung.
I can log in using NX client without any issue, but can not log in from the console.

I haven't seen anything like it before. I have F15 installed dual-boot with Windows Vista, and I've updated packages. Booting into F15 works fine, no issues.
However: if I shut down and reboot into either (a) Windows or (b) even just the BIOS config screen, the system crashes abruptly after about 1 minute (with no warning/error) and tries to reboot. Booting straight back into F15 sometimes seems to cause the issue, but not always.
The reboot then fails, it doesn't even get to BIOS screen - all that happens is disk lights (HDD, DVD-ROM) keep thrashing. Manual reboot (hold power button for 4 seconds until shutdown; press power button to restart) doesn't help; reboot still stalls. Only disconnecting from mains power, reconnecting, and rebooting works.
It might not even be a Fedora issue - I've tried recent Ubuntu and Mint 11 live CDs, and they cause the same problem - but I'm posting here since I like my F15 installation and want to keep it I've noted that older distros on live CD (eg. F14, SuSe 11.3) don't seem to cause this problem. Maybe a recent kernel issue?
How can something in F15 persist across soft reboot and crash a completely different OS?
I have a gentoo distribution and need to store the information of dmesg collected until a system crash. At present, after a reboot or a crash the information in dmesg are lost and are not available at the next reboot. How can I save all the information in dmesg until a crash and read them after the succeed reboot?I also checked for dmesg.x files in /var/log or similar files but with no success.

I recently decided to partition my laptop wholly to ubuntu, so i installed ubuntu without any problem, then i logged on for the first time and i installed the driver to my monitor (nvidia) and i did sudo apt-get update which made me get all sorts of updates, untill the updating stopped at about halfway asking me to reboot the system.
I rebooted the system, but no matter what i do, if i run it in recovery mode or not, i always get stuck on this piece of code on a black screen:

It seems that watching an embedded video crashes my system every once in a while. Is there any way to figure out what is causing the crashes or fix it?
Some extra info - The cpu usage jumps to 45-50 percent when a embedded video is playing.
I seem to be having a problem on the new Kernel (2.6.35-23) with the system randomly freezing.
I have installed a number of things in recent days leading up to this problem, but when i boot with the old kernel i don't seem to have any issues. From this i am guessing its the new kernel.
The freezing seems (although i am not sure) to be worse when Rhythmbox is running. When it happens everything freezes, the playing song skips, replaying the same one second of music over and over. All the hotkeys stop and the mouse cursor stops responding.
I have seen people talking about system logs to look at system crashes but i don't know how to show those. I also doubt my ability to interpret them.
I am running Ubuntu 10.10 (amd64) on an Intel Atom 525 motherboard. I have a 5-bay SATA enclosure connected to my system through a Syba SD-SATA2-2E2I PCI card (uses the SIL3124 chipset). Under small to moderate load (transfer speed: ~25 Mb/sec), this setup works perfectly. Under heavy load (transfer speed: ~40 - 70 Mb/sec), the system crashes. By crash I mean I loose SSH connectivity, I can't ping the system, etc. The only solution is a hard reset. Initially, I thought this was a SAMBA problem so I logged into the system and tried doing a copy directly from the SATA enclosure to the system disk (connected directly to the motherboard). After 100 GB copied (at ~75 Mb/sec), the system crashed. My question: I am fairly new to Linux and Ubuntu. How would I go about diagnosing this problem?

I'm then put into initramfs
I assume that this is because the system wasn't unmounted properly but I haven't been able to find the best way to solve this problem.
Occasionally, kwin will crash and recover itself, but afterwards, my system starts using GTK notifications (yellow popup bubbles with the pie graph countdown timer). I've tried restarting knotify4 to no avail.

I came home from my walk and my monitor was black, no activity when hitting keyboard or mouse. Shut down machine and then waited for reboot, it sticks to the same moment as picture posted. I tried dif boot seq in the selection but no luck. I cant find my boot disc.

As the title says, i was in the middle of the upgrade, when the system froze then a black screen with the text similar to: starting apache ..... starting ..... ... in that way, but with more text, i could not remember the exact details. When i boot up, it say /dev not found, and other errors, and a weird black screen that seems to be loading modules appears, but never finishes and starts to act strange. Any way i can get this fixed without just copying my data and reimaging my partition.

I had ubuntu 10.04, but a few days ago, the update manager started to bug me that some stuff don't work properly and that I need to to a partial upgrade. I postponed that for a while, and all worked fine, but I finally had sometime and clicked "yes", all began collapsing:
1) the update manager crashed while updating.
2) I rebooted and ran it again. same crash at the same stage.
3) I decided, god knows why, to do a full upgrade to 10.10, which also crasehd.
Now it won't even boot. It always get stuck at a line saying "no IPv6 routers present" or something of that sort. when I switch off manually the wireless switch on the laptop, the boot gets stuck a bit earlier, on a line that says: "laptop login:"
EDIT: I just remembered something which might be important: I had a hibernation problem on the upgrade to 10.04, so I played around a bit with that. now it uses libgcrypt, and I remember I set up something manually then, but I can't remember what.
I've recently installed release 11.04 and am trying to get wireless networking operational. I'm using a netgear wg111t usb wireless adapter. I've installed ndiswrapper and have got the netgear windows drivers installed ok. My problem is when I try to connect wirelessly I get a system crash, think it tends to be called a kernel panic in linux. The network connection is confirmed and about 5-10 seconds later the crash happens. I've updated the linux kernel to 2.6.39-0-generic but thats not helped.
I can connect with a cable but that is somewhat limiting.
how can I disable the automatic file system check after power outages or system crashes? The check sometimes prompts for a key (ignore, repair etc.) but the panels do not have a keyboard.

View 4 Replies View RelatedToday while browsing the web and attempting to listen to a mp3 file on the site of a musician, this laptop with Lucid CRASHED badly! It went into a black screen and the only solution was a reboot! I am not a masochist, but I could repeat the crash a couple of times just to verify it.
This is the worst crash that I have seen on GNU/Linux! I expect things to go down in a more controlled way: maybe first the crash of a plug-in, then the crash of a web browser, eventually the crash of a windows manager. But I don't like seeing that playing an mp3 is leading to kernel crash on what is supposed to be a LTS-release!
Any observations of similar behavior or hints on the cause? Is it possible that the crash is related to intel graphics 85x on this system that are now very problematic on Lucid?
By the way, the music file in question is probably not malformed and plays perfectly on Mac and Windows. I am digging into system logs to try to find any record of the problem. For the the record: I've been around Ubuntu since 5.04, on Linux since 2003, on Unix since 1988, and on computers since 1979.
My son kicked out power during the install phase of 10.04 (about half complete) and now the system is unbootable.
The boot process dies shortly after starting fsck with the error:
init: plymouth main process (382) killed by SEGV signal
So this looks bad (to me), segmentation violations are never good.
So does anyone have any suggestions for booting and completing the upgrade?
If I'm SOL on this OS image is there a way to image over the OS and save my data?
The only option I see now is to buy a new disk, image onto it, mount my current disk and copy my data. (takes money and time)
I am having a bit of a problem with my Ubuntu Server 10.04 install. I think it might be a kernel problem. Basically, what happens is when I copy a large file (a 160GB disk image) to my drive (>60GB) the system consistently crashes after about 60GB of the file is transferred. It doesn't matter if I am sending the file using cifs, or over SSH. Checking syslog (paste dump here), it seems these flush errors always appear shortly before the crash occurs. The destination filesystem is a hardware RAID 10 array with 2TB of space. It is formatted as EXT4.
