May 26, 2010I installed Fedora 13 to sdb7 and installed Grub to root all went well on install. But when I reboot it stops at Loading Partition.

Fedora :: FC13 Upgrade Stops After Reboot With LVM Error
May 14, 2011I have a problem with LVM. My installation of Fedora 13 is on 2 SATA hard disks, which are set as /dev/sda and /dev/sdb. On sda there are two partitions (boot and a physical part of the volume group) and on sdb is only one partition (other physical part of the volume group). Both physical parts of the volume group are used for one volume group and the VG is splittet into multiple logical groups. The system works and all seems to be ok. But I saw a strange thing on last reboot:
The device /dev/sda was not recognized during the boot sequence, instead the system has build a device /dev/md126p1 with the same geometry and partitions and it has the same disk id as sda.
The volume group is also ok, the system boots into the desktop environment, but the system-config-lvm says that /dev/sda is not initialized and the volume group consists of sdb and md126p1. fdisk -l knows three devices (sda, sdb and md126p1). I think, that is the reason for my problems with preupgrade, which stops after the reboot with a LVM problem (root not found). Can I correct that without data loss?

May 1, 2010I have an obsession of packing a large number of distros into one hard disk. Many distro installers do not like it even though their kernels can support higher number partitions. Typically an installer, say from a Debian family, would freeze when checking a hard disk that has more than 15 partitions. However if I put the same distro on a hard disk with less than 16 partition the installer will be very happy to install. I then copy the distro back to the original disk to a different partition, change the boot loader setting and fstab and the new distro will be happily working in the next hard disk that has 57 partitions.
This scheme works for any distro until recently Fedora refuses the move. I didn't investigate the cause then but I have just come up against a brick wall with the Red Hat Enterrise Linux 6. It was one out of the 4 I just moved. The others are operating happily. The RHEL will boot to a Grub screen. When I select the user account and type in the password it just refreshes the screen as though the password could not be accepted. I can boot up another Linux, mount the RHEL partition, change root to it and change my normal user password. Better still why don't I create a new user and another password.
Same result. I could not pass the log in screen with revised password or from a new account which got displayed. How about a little trick told by Justlinux library file --> to alter the run level. So I mounted the RHEL partition, changed root to it, edited the /etc/inittab and amended the run level from 5 (for X desktop) to 1 (single user - terminal mode). RHEL now boots to a root terminal! Success in a sense that my RHEL boots as expected and there was never a problem with booting. However newer Linux do not permit root log on to the desktop so I cannot check the log in with the ordinary user account to X. After I fiddled with the various files/parameters related to the gdm and X still no joy so I cut my loss and post the question here.

my lilo fedora entry boots fine but... at the middle of "after boot" loading the system hangs and stops the usual driver detection, etc (normally, it hangs on the CDROM detection or USB 2.0 camera detection).
OpenSUSE :: KVM VM Stops Instead Of Reboot / Why Is So?
May 16, 2011I am using opensuse 11.4, libvirtd 0.8.8, virt-manger 0.8.5.
If I want to reboot a virtual machine (typing 'reboot -n' in the VMs console) the virtual machine stops insteads of reboot.
The virtual machine is also opensuse 11.4
Afterwards I have to click 'run' in virt-manager.
Then the vm starts and remains running til the next reboot.
If I try to reboot from comandline by typing 'virsh reboot <vmname>' I get the message
error: Failed to reboot domain <vmname>
error: this function is not supported by the connection driver: virDomainReboot
What is wrong with my setup?

Fedora :: Reload Partition Without Reboot?
Jul 13, 2010I make partition on fedora-12, after that it gives me warning
kernel was unable to re-read the partition table on /dev/sda (Device or resource busy). This means Linux won't know anything about the modifications you made until you reboot.
Is it possible to reload partition without reboot, i tried partprobe as well but no luck.

However, each time I go back to windows, windows decides to destroy grub and it stops loading, then I have to use a rescue disk and do a grub-install again. It's annoying to have to do this everytime I go to windows. Is there a way to avoid windows to destroy grub? Or install grub on a place windows cannot touch?

OpenSUSE Network :: IPv6 Stops Working After Reboot
Aug 10, 2010I have an issue on a few servers where IPv6 stops working after a reboot. I can ping anything within the same subnet but anything outside of that it gives me host unreachable. I believe that it is not routing for some reason, but I am not sure why. I have tried adding a default Ipv6 route for Eth3 but nothing seems to work.

Jan 13, 2010So I'm in need of VM'ing a couple OS's to keep from repartitioning and dual booting my desktop. The first I'm trying to boot is a 64bit version of windows (have XP and 7 disc, trying XP for now) as I need to convert some of my work's ancient programs that still use DOS functions.
I choose Virtualbox over VMware just for the sake of VB being in the repos. Install and initial config went fine, but when I try to start (run) the VM the screen goes black, then the computer completely stops responding and needs a hard reboot. Pasting what I believe to be the error part in the log. If you need the entire log I can email or host it - too big for a post. Kernel Version - 2.6.32-trunk-amd64. Debian Sid

Jun 29, 2011Installed 11.4 on a machine with two SATA drives which had previously been running Windows 2003. I deleted the Windows partitions and created a new partition scheme: Swap, root and one additional partition on the first disk, one large partition on the second disk. Install runs fine but upon reboot I get "Error loading operating system". Booting off a Windows floppy and running FDisk shows that the root partition is marked as active.

I set loaded it using setsid unity then added some basic folders to the newly created ~/.filesearch.cfg such as ~/Desktop, ~/Music, ~/Videos etc. removed ~/ and turned down the indexing depth to 2. However the Lens works great as long as I've run setsid unity manually during the session, but I've I restart it's gone again and I only seem to be able to access files from my recent history. May 3, 2010My Server runs "fine", then I type init 6 for rebooting or some cron job initiates Init 6 and my system stops in grub at: GRUB loading stage1.5. Error 18 After another Ctrl+Alt+Del the system boots as if anything happened. this is why I doubt that it's an issue of too big HDD or BIOS.

Ubuntu Installation :: Installing 11.04 As Dual Boot With Win7 / Stops After Setting Partition Size
May 5, 2011I have Windows 7 on my laptop and am attempting to install Ubuntu 11.04 from CD.I boot from the disk drive, follow the prompts and eventually get to the screen where I can set how much space I want to give to the Ubuntu partition vs the Windows partition. My hard disk is 250GB, so I reduce the Windows one to 100GB (currently has 80GB of files on it) and set the Ubuntu one to 130GB (the other 20GB is split between the two hidden Windows 7 partitions).
I then click to continue and the progress bar for the install starts up but doesn't move, it just sits at 0%. I realised that the dialogue box underneath the progress bar can still be expanded and asks me to test using -n and -s, but when I type either of these into the box and hit return, nothing happens. I have checked my download of the .iso I used using WinMD5Sum and the hash matches up. I have already tried installing from USB but this threw an error, hence using CD. My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 1546 running Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit Processor: AMD Turion X2 Dual-Core Mobile RM-75 2.20GHz

Apr 10, 2010I was and idiot and stared messing around gparted before I was ready to partition my hard drive. Consequently I messed up my partitions, and when I restarted my computer a screen comes up that reads:

Have I killed my computer or is there some way I can fix it?

Aug 22, 2010I've resisted the urge to post for as long as I could. I use these forums quite often in finding answers to the numerous linux questions that I've had & found it to be a great resource. For some reason after an innocent reboot of my Fedora 12 Core system, GRUB decided it would no longer load the O/S. I was just getting a flashing _ in the top left of the screen. I thought there must be a problem with the partition table & have used the systemRescueCd to run testdisk (I have made a copy of the disk first to an image file using dd - don't worry I made sure I got the commands around the correct way!).
testdisk shows that I have a partition which is bootable & Primary, which appears to be the grub partition (I can list the files in test disk). However when I search the disk I get the following after it has found a couple of partitions. (it is an 80Gb disk)
