I have a gentoo distribution and need to store the information of dmesg collected until a system crash. At present, after a reboot or a crash the information in dmesg are lost and are not available at the next reboot. How can I save all the information in dmesg until a crash and read them after the succeed reboot?I also checked for dmesg.x files in /var/log or similar files but with no success.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am currently creating a usb device driver consisting of mostly read and write commands. It can successfully read/write using the bulk endpoints, however reading from the interrupt endpoint causes a system crash.As the crash happens whilst writing to kern.log, the file doesn't get a chance to close, therefore done of my debug printk calls are saved. Also, I get know response from using the magic sysrq key.
Does anyone have an ideas on how I can get any system information about what's causing the crash, or possible causes of the crash. (Using a usb sniffer running on another pc, I can see that the packet is coming in from the interrupt endpoint).
I need to save mac address (that I already changed it) even when I reboot.

I had to hard boot the system and now system is hanging. However, I can ssh into the system from another machine so I know only X windows hung.
I can log in using NX client without any issue, but can not log in from the console.

I haven't seen anything like it before. I have F15 installed dual-boot with Windows Vista, and I've updated packages. Booting into F15 works fine, no issues.
However: if I shut down and reboot into either (a) Windows or (b) even just the BIOS config screen, the system crashes abruptly after about 1 minute (with no warning/error) and tries to reboot. Booting straight back into F15 sometimes seems to cause the issue, but not always.
The reboot then fails, it doesn't even get to BIOS screen - all that happens is disk lights (HDD, DVD-ROM) keep thrashing. Manual reboot (hold power button for 4 seconds until shutdown; press power button to restart) doesn't help; reboot still stalls. Only disconnecting from mains power, reconnecting, and rebooting works.
It might not even be a Fedora issue - I've tried recent Ubuntu and Mint 11 live CDs, and they cause the same problem - but I'm posting here since I like my F15 installation and want to keep it I've noted that older distros on live CD (eg. F14, SuSe 11.3) don't seem to cause this problem. Maybe a recent kernel issue?
How can something in F15 persist across soft reboot and crash a completely different OS?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am having a Xen server xend daemon is taking care of giving interface names like vif1.0 or vif0.2 to the connected guest operating systems on it.I can not save the current IPTABLE rules since upon reboot the xend daemon gives different names to virtual ethernet interfaces i.e. vif1.0 or vif3.0 or vif9.0 like that.I have some rules that I want to be active upon subsequent reboots and not all.Say for example an SSH to external server at port 8000 should forward the request to a machine on LAN.Which I have done by port forwarding from IPTABLES.So I need to save some rules.I was thinking to make a script which on reboot activates those rules.

I change the audio channels to 6 in alsamixer by choosing my sound card and change the channels to '6ch'. But this setting is not preserved. I see that after a reboot the channels are again going back to 2ch. I have to manually change everytime to 6ch after each reboot. Is there a way to save the setting in alsamixer so that I will get 6ch everytime after reboot? I am not sure I have explained my problem in a way so that you can understand.

The pc connects to my monitor through a dlink KVM switch so I can switch back and forth between computers.
When I reboot my monitor settings disapear and everything is real real large.
If i disconnect from the KVM and connect Ubuntu directly to the monitor and detect monitor it will allow me to adjust settings so everything looks normal. Until I reboot and I am back to the same huge icons again. If I try to go back and adjust monitor settings there are only 2 settings options because it does not see my monitor through the kvm switch again.

View 2 Replies View RelatedThis was my first experience with Ubuntu, I was told to switch the hard drives on my computer and put the Windows drive in a safe place for the install. The first time I did the install on the hard drive (which was the clean second hard drive that came with my computer), I either didn't realize I believe I didn't realize I had to click a button and thought the install had gotten stuck, and therefore cut off the install midway through. The second time around the install went without a hitch, and I was able to boot to desktop once. There, I was notified that I needed/should install NVIDIA drivers, I believe version 173 was listed as the next most recent drives (the other was "current"), I have an NVIDIA GeForce 7350LE graphics card, and after installing the drivers, I went to the restart menu as directed and clicked restart, not shut down but restart, and there were several listed errors on the text/DOS screen, shutdown errors I believe (the errors were 5 digits and were something like 56759 or something like that, I can't be certain if I'm remembering right, though, but there were two errors going over again). I then proceeded to turn off the computer manually, and upon it coming on again, instead of the normal Ubuntu flash screen before login, a more choppy Ubuntu 10.10 screen popped up and it led me to the DOS mode, where I was able to login, but it did me no good because I don't know command logic for Ubuntu. The best I did (its the best I ever do when these things happen) is get menus to pop up that are basically useless. I turned the computer off and on again three times, and tried booting directly from disk, but that failed.
I'm actually using the same computer I just reinserted the Windows drive back in after the frustrating experience. Windows has been giving me problems itself, and I really wanted to switch to Ubuntu but I need to know that this is a fluke and not the norm. I can live with this sort of thing being so uncommon I must have did something that was very strange and out of the ordinary to my computer. But if its commonplace, I want to know that too, because that's just something I can't live with.

Then when you do lsmod, the driver you were calling showed "used by zero". So it seems like the kernel driver was not accessed. In the kernel driver, I had many printk statements, but nothing printed in the buffer. if the driver get accessed and what could cause this?

After getting a SDHC-compatible reader i found it seems there is no part. table on the card and no fdisk(1), badblocks(1) can read that card.
Seems they will wait forever to get a part table.

I can't work out how to save the iptables. I searched the whole system for files/folders containing the name "iptables" and got 3 results:

I've tried iptables save, iptables-save and iptables save active.
"iptables save" and "iptables save active" give me an invalid argument error. "iptables-save" isn't a valid command. "iptables --help" gives me a list of valid switches, none of which have to do with saving.

I have Ubuntu 9.10 dual booting with Windows7.My ext3 /home is mounted as F: in windows.I share a firefox profile between them so that when i am in Windows my firefox uses the same profile as it does when in Ubuntu.It all worked great until recently. I am unable to save files by right clicking and save as. In the config i am unable to set a directory to save to. It neer asks me where to save to. Just nothing happens. some off my book marks are all messed up as well, my rss feeds have the same post on some random website every time i log on and i have to manually refresh to get the correct feeds back. I am unable to delete the random bookmark.

I boot F15 at least once per day. /var/log/dmesg has not been updated since June 3. /var/log/dmesg was being updated correctly when I ran F14. On f15, if I issue "dmesg" from the command line, I get the expected result. Is this a bug?

now i can select and use the new resolution - until next reboot. after an reboot 1280x720 is again not available. even if i work with sudo - the resolution isnt there....
