No wireless networking. The ethernet works fine, and the wireless interface itself works well in Windows 7 (dual boot). Tried: Ndiswrapper, notoriously quirky, does not seem to work with the XP driver (the oldest driver available for the RTL8191SE). The linux driver offered on the manufacturer's website lacks any installation instructions. I have no clue how to install a linux driver. SUSE seems to have two network managers that are constantly complaining about control: Network Manager and Yast. Neither are great and I am left missing my Ubuntu.
However, my audio only seems to work on SUSE. I have tried almost every distro on this machine. Ubuntu lacked sound and wireless, Fedora played startup sounds, but would not play an mp3 or wav file (fiddling with the mixer did not help). And Fedora also lacked wireless support. PCLinuxOS, my favorite, lacked sound and wireless. Tried some oldies too. ELE, DSL, Puppy, Ubuntu Netbook remix, Vector, Browserpuppy, Crunchbang, Cruncheee (just for experimental sakes) and probably others I am not remembering. So far, installing a free linux distro has cost me 14 dvd-R's and countless hours of installing, reformatting and reinstalling. Part of me really wanted crunchbang to work, as I love the minimalism and blacked-out theme.
I need wireless network access. The wireless light remains red in Linux and pressing the key does nothing to start the device. In Windows 7 it always lights white and works perfectly. Why hasn't SUSE adopted a gui for ndiswrapper? Other distros have it. Why is my brand new laptop, which is by no means abnormal in make or configuration, not 100% supported natively by any Linux distro? I just updated to the new kernel yesterday. So I should be running the most modern operating system available. Yet good-ol Windows 7 is my only fully functional environment.

when I had windows vista on this computer and my wifi went down for good. Well recently my girlfriend was having problems with her wireless and I put ubuntu on it yesterday and then it worked well that made me wonder so I installed ubuntu over my operating system on this computer.
I have not much experience in linux but I have tried most things I have read and when i went to the hardware drivers in the system's drop down a wireless driver doesn't show up I have no driver on here and of course after i wiped the drive and put this system on it i found the Compaq wireless drivers install (not sure if its real or not). I can get on line fine with an ethernet but that is inconvenient to me with the nearest hook up being a bridged network on my brother's computer or the home router which is 30 ft away.

I've decided to try Linux again after a 5 year gap - in around 2005 I installed Suse (I think and I'm not sure of the version) to an Hp laptop and, back then I got hugely frustrated that I had no sound, couldn't for the life of me figure out how to install the driver and gave up after around a week. new company, new laptop, thought I'd try again in 2010 - I'm trying to use the laptop as a work machine mainly, but for dj-ing in an emergency, so I need a 2nd Os and Linux fit the bill. I've got 10 years of It experience, though these days am a Project Manager by day. I've technical enough, but don't have much time.
Naturally I assumed that, by now, everything would be nice and smooth. And, at first, it was - I chose Debian Studio edition (low latency) found a usb linux creator (this is a netbook so no cd drive), Linuxlive usb creator, made up a usb key of Debian 10.04 (desktop edition, as I was informed this was the standard and that I could upgrade to studio after), partitioned my drive, installed and.... Black screen, flashing cursor.
Ok - found some instructions that told me how to work round that...did...but then couldn't get wireless (I've only got wireless internet). ended up, after a day of fiddling with 'blacklisting' drivers, deciding their must be something wrong with my install, so started again with the 'netbook' edition of debian 10.04. This time it boots. Still no wireless.
Now I find people saying things like "blacklist this driver" (b43 and b44) and "connect to the internet and install this driver". Only one problem - only wireless internet - if I go to install more drivers it tells me there aren't any. So I think "I'll install a driver from usb". Naively assuming that by now it'll be a self contained installable package like windows and osx. I find that I need an 'STA' driver (and frankly by now I've spent a long time on forums - this was meant to be easy). Ok - I find the 802.11 Linux STA driver on the broadcom site (can't post links here yet). ownload the 32 bit version, stick it on a key...read the readme and.... Frankly, I'm one step away from trying to roll this all back. I cannot believe I need to be in a 'terminal' typing;
# lsmod | grep "b43|ssb|wl"
# rmmod b43
# rmmod ssb
# rmmod wl
and so on.
either way, I plough on and get to # insmod wl.ko but it says it can't find it. how to install this driver? Is it even the right one? PS I'm staggered Linux is still so non techie friendly.

I'm trying to find a command or application that will tell me what drivers my wifi card is using.
I've been googling for a while now and all I get in return for any query I try are articles about folks having wifi troubles.
The Ubuntu install works fine but my Windows install seems incapable of connecting. I've recently realised that I think it all started when I installed 10.04. I think 10.04 might have rewritten the firmware on the wifi module and now Windows can't connect. I'm not sure if this is possible but it is the only solution I can come up with considering that I've now tried 2 different version of Windows and they both have the same problem.
Anyway anyone know of a command or app I can use to discover which driver my card is using at the moment so that I can begin my investigations.

Sorry for repeating the same old complaint but there doesn't seem to be a common fix: Wireless does not work on my Presario R3000 although SUSE 11.x lists the hardware in the Hardware Information list and the hardware is turned on. Network Manager doesn't display any wireless networks in SUSE while Win 7 can see 4 of them on the same machine. Ubuntu has no problem either

I am running openSUSE 11.3 updated with all the latest patches and I cannot connect to my wireless router. I am running Linux Mint 10 on the same type of notebook HP Compaq 6910p and it worked right after the install. If I take off the security WPA & WPA2 Personal I can connect. lspci -v | less shows this for my wireless card.
10:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 4965 AG or AGN [Kedron] Network Connection (rev 61)
Subsystem: Intel Corporation Device 1000
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 29
Memory at e4000000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=8K]
[code]....
I am using the same settings for both notebooks just can't figure out why openSUSE 11.3 won't connect. I get the prompt to key in my password, I've even checked the box to show password to make sure I was keying it in correctly. Everything was good but it just goes right back to the password prompt after it fails trying to connect.

I'm trying to find a driver for my wireless card (Atheros AR928X) and I think it's ath9k what I need. As far as I know there isn't a linux driver for it, so I installed ndiswrapper to use a windows driver instead. The problem is that when I type modprobe ndiswrapper I get "bash: modprobe: command not found" (even as root). I know I'm missing something about modprobe, but I can't find any help on google. Anyway, I installed ndisgtk next, because I thought it would be easier, but when I go to System> Administration> Windows Wireless Drivers I get a message "Unknown error".Do you have any ideas on how I'll make ndiswrapper work?

I just finished putting openSUSE 11.4 on my Compaq Presario V5000. I have been trying for hours to find the answer of how to get my wireless card to work. I can't connect to my router wirelessly and the on/off button for the wireless mode does not light up when pressed.
As far as I can tell from what I have already tried, I have a broadcoamm wireless card. It is a bm4318. I have b43-fwcutter installed and I have tried updating my firmware through the terminal. I have also used 'sudo /usr/sbin/install_bcm43xx_firmware'. It appeared successful, but the laptop still cannot make a wireless connection.
