Debian Installation :: Wheezy Install 7.8.0 - Cannot Stay Connected Through WiFi

Apr 2, 2015

I love using wheezy but i keep having to take my computer downstairs to hook it up to router through ethernet, i need it to connect through wifi and stay connected.

heres my problem, if i use live image and connect to network its fine but during installation process it gets to the network configuration, it will keep disconnecting at dhcp and if i try and continue it gives me the error packages broken due to it not staying connected.

MY WIFI CARD IS A TP-LINK WDN 4800

if i try and just do a net install then it doesnt show my wifi network.

it uses in both cases ar93xx atheros driver for installing, i just need to know how i can try and keep a stable connection over wifi so it can install over wifi so i dont have to keep taking pc downstairs to install it.

i done something that stopped me being able to login into wheezy i was left at black screen with blinking command line, i have reverted to mint debian until i can get a stable connection over wifi to install wheezy again.

Debian Configuration :: Wheezy - Detect Printer On One WiFi Network But Not Other

Sep 21, 2015

I use a 'wifi hotspot' provided by my mobile (android) phone for internet/email and to connect to my wifi capable HP p1102w printer. Installation and use of the printer worked perfectly until I bought a new phone, again android with 'wifi hotspot' capability. The wifi connection on my new phone works fine for internet and email but it totally fails to detect my printer.

I have tried to detect and connect to the printer using system-config-printer and using the HP utility hp-setup. Both fail to detect the printer on the 'new' wifi network.

The old network connection which detects the printer as expected gives the following output:

Code: Select allpat@debian:~$ ifconfig
eth0      Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 6c:3b:e5:91:ec:0c
          UP BROADCAST MULTICAST  MTU:1500  Metric:1
          RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
          RX bytes:0 (0.0 B)  TX bytes:0 (0.0 B)

[Code] ....

The new (problematic) network connection which fails to detect the printer gives the following output:

Code: Select allpat@debian:~$ ifconfig
eth0      Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 6c:3b:e5:91:ec:0c
          UP BROADCAST MULTICAST  MTU:1500  Metric:1

Debian Hardware :: Ralink RT2501 USB WiFi Adapter Hot And Noisy - Wheezy Freezes

Sep 14, 2014

I've just installed Debian Wheezy on my old Toshiba Satellite A10 (Intel celeron 2.20 GHz, 1GB Ram, 30 GB hard drive) and tried to connect to my home wifi network with a usb wifi adapter (Hamlet HNWU254G). lsusb in terminal says it is Ralink RT2501. Ethernet worked fine, so I installed firmware-ralink package, the adapter was recognized and I was able to connect.

However, I heard quite frequently a strange whistle and realized it came from the usb wifi adapter; it also got very very hot. Other strange thing: the computer some times freezes: screen flickering, loss of control of mouse and keyboard, need to shut down with power button.

At first I thought it was the video card not being powerful enough for Gnome (even classic), but then I installed Xfce4 and nothing changed. Instead, when working offline, freezes happen less frequently (but still happen).

I've tried the usb adapter on another laptop with wheezy: it gets hot, but there are no whistles and freezes.

Debian :: Radeon Driver And By Consequence Gdm3 In Wheezy?

May 21, 2011

I want to use the open source radeon driver. My video card is AMD/ATI RADEON HD4850. I want 3D acceleration even if it's inferior to fglrx's although I would like if it exceeded fglrx's performance but the performance of the driver is not the point of this thread. Fortunately, fsck was checking the hard drive upon booting so I had time to write the boot output in this computer which I believe would be of help.

Video card:
Failed to load firmware "radeon/RV770_pfp.bin"
*ERROR* Failed to load firmware!
disabling GPU acceleration

gdm3: rt2x00lib_request_firmware: Error - Failed to request firmware. I attempted to install firmware-linux and do sudo gdm3 but all that did is say gdm3 lasted for 0.x seconds where x changes and it kept re-printing that sentence infinitely. I also rebooted and tried to let gdm3 start itself.

Firstly, I'm assuming the open source driver relies on proprietary firmware. Why is this the case? Secondly, how do I get the radeon/RV770_pfp.bin firmware? Is it not in the firmware-linux package? Why does it matter that GPU acceleration is disabled for loading gdm3? Isn't simple 2D enough? (I'm not saying this because I don't want to have 3D enabled since I do want it enabled but because I would imagine that 2D capabilities are enough to load gdm3). If more information is needed, just ask.

Debian Hardware :: Wheezy - Cannot Upgrade Nvidia Driver To 319.82 Backport

Nov 17, 2014

I'm on Wheezy with version 304.117 of the proprietary nvidia driver installed and working, but an application I have needs a newer version of the driver. I'm trying to install the 319.82 version in backports by following the instructions given here, but when I issue the command to install nvidia-kernel-dkms, I get the following:

Code: Select all> sudo aptitude -t wheezy-backports -r install nvidia-kernel-dkms

The following NEW packages will be installed:
  libgl1-nvidia-glx-i386:i386{a} nvidia-driver{a}

The following packages will be REMOVED:
  libgl1-nvidia-alternatives{u} libglx-nvidia-alternatives{u}
  libxvmcnvidia1{u} nvidia-glx{u}

The following packages will be upgraded:
  glx-alternative-nvidia glx-diversions libgl1-nvidia-glx
  libgl1-nvidia-glx:i386 libnvidia-ml1 nvidia-alternative
  nvidia-installer-cleanup nvidia-kernel-dkms nvidia-settings
  nvidia-smi nvidia-vdpau-driver xserver-xorg-video-nvidia

The following partially installed packages will be configured:
  mint-flashplugin-11:i386
12 packages upgraded, 2 newly installed, 4 to remove and 151 not upgraded.
Need to get 32.3 MB of archives. After unpacking 9,440 kB will be freed.

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 glx-alternative-mesa : Depends: glx-diversions (= 0.2.2) but 0.5.1~bpo70+1 is to be installed.

Internal error: found 2 (choice -> promotion) mappings for a single choice.

The following actions will resolve these dependencies:

      Remove the following packages:
1)      glx-alternative-mesa
2)      glx-alternative-nvidia
3)      libgl1-nvidia-glx
4)      libgl1-nvidia-glx:i386
5)      nvidia-alternative
6)      nvidia-kernel-dkms

[Code] ....

Accept this solution? [Y/n/q/?] q

The mint-flashplugin problem is a separate issue which I've had for a while. I assume that it can be ignored for the purposes of this post.

If I'm reading the aptitude output above correctly, it's telling me that the only way to "resolve" the conflict is by uninstalling all nvidia support, leaving me with no driver at all. Is that right?

Debian Hardware :: NVidia Binary Driver Causing Hot GPU In Wheezy / Fix It?

Apr 21, 2011

Having upgraded to kernel 2.6.38 in wheezy, you now have to blacklist the nouveau driver as just uninstalling the packages don't seem to be enough as it is with squeeze. The latest nVidia 270 driver makes my GPU run over 10°s hotter. The 264 driver in the Debian repo has the same effect. I can't install the 195 driver (which I know is ok with my GPU), for some unknown installation error (error 1 during compile).

I have a GeForce 7950GTX on my Dell laptop. The hardware is ok, as the temperatures are much lower with squeeze, and I have cleaned inside the laptop.

Is anyone else having any issues with excessive heat with nVidia? Could this be a driver or a kernel issue?

And why did I have to blacklist the nouveau drivers even though they weren't installed?

Debian Hardware :: Wifi Driver Automatic Loading?

Nov 23, 2010

I have broadcom wireless card in my system. I got the driver from broadcom site. I compiled it against my kernel and the module works fine. How could I automatically load this driver at startup. I followed the instruction found in the driver source README file. But its not working. The steps I followed are as follows:

# load driver
# cp wl.ko /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/net/wireless
# depmod -a

The same steps I followd in 2.6.26 kernel and it worked fine. Now its not working in my new kernel 2.6.32.For manually loading it I have to remove the ssb driver and the download this one. Otherwise it will not work. So I tried adding ssb to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklistle. But that driver loads during startup. So each time I have to manually unload the ssb driver and insert the new one.

Debian :: Squeeze Vs Wheezy ?

Nov 29, 2010

But when Squeeze goes from 'testing' to 'stable' in December... does Wheezy get promoted from 'sid/unstable' to 'testing' at the same time?.

I started my life in Linux with and currently use Ubuntu, and it runs decent(barely). However, I just upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10, and because of strange little issues and increasing bloatware, I have been forced to strongly consider the "mother OS": Debian.

The reason for my original question is that I want to run whatever the current "testing version" is. And if Wheezy gets promoted at the same time Squeeze does, then I will just wait the 4 weeks instead of slogging through another install(I prefer fresh installations vs upgrading within). I know the test versions of Debian are a bit more active than stable, but I have used Ubuntu for over 2 years, so I have some experience dealing with Terminal commands, package management, gnome, etc...I am also currently VirtualBoxing a copy of Squeeze.

Debian :: How To Upgrade To Wheezy

May 20, 2011

I got "stuck" with stable up to now and want to upgrade to Wheezy. But, although I've done this before, I'm having a dependency problem I wanted to ask about before breaking my system somehow. This is the /etc/apt/sources.list, ready for Wheezy:

[URL]

So, I regularly use aptitude as my package manager. After updating the database with aptitude update, trying aptitude full-upgrade gives me a huge of conflicts.

[code]....

But, if I use apt-get dist-upgrade, I get no conflicts. if I dist-upgrade with apt-get, will that affect my daily usage of aptitude (which I prefer)? I know APT is a single database and apt-get and aptitude are just different interfaces, but I guess differences might rise when marking packages as automatically or manually installed.

Debian :: Sound Not Card Configured - Error 'Volume Control Did Not Find Any Elements And/or Devices To Control" - Driver

Feb 8, 2011

Laptop is Dell Latitude C600/C500 with Pentium III 850Mhz, 256Kb L2 Cache, 256MB RAM, ATI M3 video card, HD 20005 MB and sound card is EES Maestro 3i. After trying to do something with Windows 2000 which was installed on the machine, I decided to put Linux without keeping windows on the machine. First I try with Xubuntu (latest version) which was working but slowly, then I found that Debian could work fine on that machine. I have installed latest version 5.08 and was surprised how goodly old machine can work. I solved problems with screen resolution (change from 800x600 to 1024x768) but I couldn't find solution how to fix problem with sound.

Actually I don't have sound on the machine. I looked for a linux driver for that sound card and Dell is only providing windows drivers. Then I found that I can solve the problem with ALSA drivers but I couldn't find the easy way (or any way at all) to install drivers and to get back the sound. When I click on 'Volume Control' (top right corner of the screen) I get the message: 'Volume control did not find any elements and/or devices to control. This means either that you don't have the right GStreamer plugins installed, or that you don't have a sound card configured.'
