Dec 25, 2009My wireless device is an integrated Dell Wireless 1397 WLAN Mini-Card, I am unsure about the driver I have in use. I am sure I have a driver installed because the configuration screen shows my network. I currently have the computer plugged into my network via CAT 5 but I would like to be able to use the wireless (obviously.) I am using Open SuSE version 11.2 and I have run the updater. I could not see my wireless network before running the updater and I can now so I know that the updates have helped but I am again stuck. I have tried to search the wireless forum and I have tried to tinker with the settings in YaST , but nothing seems to be working. Reading the Welcome page of the wireless forum, I tried the Broadcom chip-set advice:

I have read and taken to heart the advice given for receiving help and if any more is needed I will gladly give it. I have a small amount of experience with SuSE Enterprise edition so I can understand some technical stuff but I am best at following specific instructions.
Ubuntu Networking :: Can't Connect To Internet: Dell 1397 Wireless Card
Feb 25, 2010I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 computer. I boot into Ubuntu with a flash drive. When I boot, I cannot connect to a wireless network. No available networks are displayed (and I know my router is on) and the Network Manager icon displays no bars. I suspect that the Dell Wireless card (having a Broadcom BCM-4312 chipset) needs a driver. I have tried to intstall both of the restricted drivers (BCM STA and 43xx drivers), but with no success. I have run lspci in Terminal, and got many lines of text. Here are the lines that look relevant to me:

Ubuntu Networking :: Dell 1397 Wireless Card Not Working With Live USB
Mar 9, 2010I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 running Windows 7 64-bit. It has a Dell 1397 Wireless card with Broadcom BCM 4312 hardware. This is proven by running lspci in Terminal. I downloaded Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit and burned a disc of it. I used System>Administration>USB Startup Disc Creator to make a Live USB from a 4GB flash drive. I plugged it in and my computer booted into Ubuntu with no trouble. The only problem is that I can't connect to my wireless network. The problem is that no matter how I install the Broadcom STA driver, it just says that the driver is activated but not actively in use. I've used Synaptic Package Manager, Jockey, and even Terminal. I've tried running

in Terminal, but nothing seems to happen. In Ubuntu, my computer acts as though it has no wireless card, but the wired connection is fine (except for the inconvenience of connecting with a cable). In Windows 7, the wireless connection is fine.

Ubuntu Installation :: Wireless Driver Install Error On Liveusb For Dell Inspiron Mini 9
Oct 5, 2010I have a persistent liveusb with ubuntu 9.10 that I installed using the method on [url]
I use it on a Dell Inspiron Mini 9 netbook (that boots Mac OS X from its SSD). An ubuntu persistent liveusb works just great for occasional linux development and testing, but ubuntu 9.10 will be EOL next year, and I want to stay current.
I've installed ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS on a liveusb using the method on [url]
After I've booted the liveusb, under the network menu I see this:

A menu appears that looks like a PCI card with a lock on it. I select the only item under that menu, "Install Drivers". This gives a dialog that says "No proprietary drivers are in use on this system. Proprietary drivers do not have public source code..." etc. Under Ubuntu 9.10, I could at this point select "Broadcom STA wireless driver" and click the "Activate" button, and it would work. So I did that in 10.04.1.
It says, "Downloading and installing driver..."
While it's doing this, the "kerneloops" menu item appears. Then a dialog that says,
Sorry, the package "bcmwl-kernel-source 5.60.48.36 +bdcom-0ubuntu3" failed to install or upgrade.
Then another dialog that says
SystemError: installArchives() failed.
What the heck is happening here?
Well, it turns out that the error messages are wrong. I restarted and the DM9/ubuntu 10.04.1 was able to connect to the wireless network.
tl;dr: Proprietary wireless driver installation works, but it claims that it doesn't.

Apr 15, 2011I installed ubuntu 10.10 and everything worked fine for two days (and I fell in love with linux) but now I can not connect to a wireless connection. Did I mention I am new to linux and have been working on this problem for a couple of days. My wireless card is 1395 WLAN Mini-Card I think I have the b43 driver installed. I have reinstalled the driver and linux but to no effect.

As far as I know there isn't a linux driver for it, so I installed ndiswrapper to use a windows driver instead. The problem is that when I type modprobe ndiswrapper I get "bash: modprobe: command not found" (even as root). I know I'm missing something about modprobe, but I can't find any help on google. Anyway, I installed ndisgtk next, because I thought it would be easier, but when I go to System> Administration> Windows Wireless Drivers I get a message "Unknown error".Do you have any ideas on how I'll make ndiswrapper work?

Mar 28, 2011Just did an install and am loving Debian. I am having troubles with my card causing mini-freezes. I type and the input sometimes(every 30 seconds) stops and then catches up. This is really annoying. I figure it is the wireless driver because when I ran top -d 0.1 Ieee80211/1 or Ieee80211/0 was the main verdict during every stall. I have not had this problem with other distros, but came to Debian for stability. Any ideas on how to fix it?

Jul 28, 2010I have recently installed Centos. During the installation, I noticed that only sound was being tested during the installation. Once everything has been installed successfully. I can run Centos with no problem. However, when I tried to switch from one window (browser) to another. The display was slow. Thus, I suspected the driver for the graphic card of my PC is not being installed successfully. When I type /sbin/lspci | grep VGA in the terminal, I get the following output:

Then, I went to the dell support & driver site to download the driver. In the readme file, it is suggested to install dkms first before installing the graphics driver by typing rpm -ivh dkms-2.1.0.1-1.noarch.rpm
I managed to install the dkms without any error.However, when I use rpm to install the graphics driver as suggested by the readme file:
rpm -ivh dell-nvidia-190.42-1dkms_rhel5.3.x86_64.rpm
I get the following errors: error: Failed dependencies:
libX11.so.6()(64bit) is needed by dell-nvidia-190.42-1dkms_rhel5.3.x86_64
libXext.so.6()(64bit) is needed by dell-nvidia-190.42-1dkms_rhel5.3.x86_64[code]....
Since the above errors may be related to the missing packages then I use yum provides and install to find the missing packages. Even I try to install all the matched packages, i still cant install the driver for my graphic card. To be honest, i am not very sure whether I am doing the right things or not. how to solve this slow display problem when switching from one application to another.

Hurray! however (yes, dhcp).. no dns on wireless but on eth0 no problem everything shows up ip, dns.. works fine.. go to wireless it connects, gets ip but in connection information no dns servers listed

I just installed the broadcom-wl and broadcom-wl-kmp-desktop packages from the packman repository. Then there is a new entry in the bootmanager menu. Using that one, WLAN works fine.By the way: Can somebody explain me the difference between the broadcom-wl-kmp-desktop, broadcom-wl-kmp-default, broadcom-wl-kmp-pae, broadcom-wl-kmp-xen packages? I did not find any documentation about that.

The wireless works perfectly fine when I boot to Windows XP on the netbook, but not when I'm using Ubuntu. I tried troubleshooting using this htmlAt the "check for device recognition" step, the terminal tells me that it's disabled, but as far as I can tell there isn't a physical switch that allows me to turn the wireless on or off, and again, it works perfectly fine when I use XP. I'm tired of doing the ndiswrapper shuffle every time I change OS's (about every 6 months), and am considering just yanking the Broadcom and replacing it with something that will work with Centos out of the box. Preferably it should also work well with Windows, as I may have to revert to XP in the future. Does anybody have any recommendations? Yes, I should look at the HCL, and yes, I plan to, but yes, I would like feedback from you, the expert users. I'm not sure how I will destroy the Broadcom card after I remove it; I'm thinking something involving a propane torch and/or a sledgehammer. I may post pictures.

May 23, 2010I'm a totally rookie at all this. I installed Ubuntu 10.4 Netbook edition in an HP Mini 1116 NR computer--I used an SD card & UNetbootin) and the wireless router is not recognized. I've been pretty much googling and troubleshooting this problem for most of the day. I always get stuck at a dead end. This netbook does not have an ethernet adapter nor a CD-Rom drive, so I have no way of connecting to the internet w/out wireless. I am able to download things from my other laptop to the SD card.
1. When I enter sudo apt-get install build-essential at the terminal, I get "package not found."
2. When I try to install b43-fwcutter or bcmwl-kernel-source, it either won't work because I can't connect to the net or I get a "dkms dependency" issue.
3. So I tried to install the dkms pacakge and got a "gcc dependency" issue. After that, I come up with a dead end.
An alternative option, so I read, is to use ndiswrapper and download the HP wireless broadcom driver, but that driver is a .exe file and I read that ndiswrapper needs a .inf file and I can't seem to find one. Does it matter?
