I have an Atheros AR5007 802.11 b/g WiFi Adapter. I use OpenSuse 11.3, KDE desktop.When I did iwconfig, it displayed the following:

I installed Fedora 12 on my Compaq Presario c700 Notebook recently and had a great install. I installed ndiswrapper and installed the inf file for my broadcom 4311 driver through ndiswrapper as well. The installation of the driver appeared to go smoothly.
The only thing is that I still cannot connect to the internet. I aliased the driver as well to wlan0. I can not figure out what is currently the problem. I tried reinstalling the driver and I keep receive a message stating the driver is already installed.
I just finished putting openSUSE 11.4 on my Compaq Presario V5000. I have been trying for hours to find the answer of how to get my wireless card to work. I can't connect to my router wirelessly and the on/off button for the wireless mode does not light up when pressed.
As far as I can tell from what I have already tried, I have a broadcoamm wireless card. It is a bm4318. I have b43-fwcutter installed and I have tried updating my firmware through the terminal. I have also used 'sudo /usr/sbin/install_bcm43xx_firmware'. It appeared successful, but the laptop still cannot make a wireless connection.
Sorry for repeating the same old complaint but there doesn't seem to be a common fix: Wireless does not work on my Presario R3000 although SUSE 11.x lists the hardware in the Hardware Information list and the hardware is turned on. Network Manager doesn't display any wireless networks in SUSE while Win 7 can see 4 of them on the same machine. Ubuntu has no problem either

I plugged up to Ethernet and that worked fine, i updated and everything, still no wireless. I google the problem, and have tried everything under the sun to get this darn wireless card to work. View 4 Replies View RelatedAfter several hours of frustration to point of almost scrapping linux alltogether I was finally able to get my wireless networking to work in Linux Mint 6. I searched for hours and came up with several different suggestions that were supposed to fix my problem - NONE OF THEM WORKED! As a new linux user, I can completely understand why so many people try linux and then give up on it. It should not be so hard to get a wireless internet connection working.
Said another way - the people making distros should read these forums and see what difficulties are experienced and work on fixing them. In any event - I want to post my solution to the problem for my COMPAQ CQ60-211DX so that anyone else who wants to try linux on this model laptop will save a great amount of time. Here are the steps I took to get linux mint 6 to work on my laptop:
1. Open terminal window
2. Type - lspci | grep Atheros
3. Hit the enter key
If you see: Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR242x 802.11abg Wireless PCI Express Adapter (rev 01)
then these instructions WILL get your AR242x (AR5007) wireless card to work for you. Be warned - I tried everything I read including ndiswrapper, etc. - none of it worked! You will need to click the menu button go to all applications and then administration. From there, select hardware drivers and look for anything that has Atheros in it. CLICK DEACTIVATE! Now you will have to restart your computer. When it starts back up....
Anyone knows what is the right driver for this device? It is not being recognized by the system, and there is no Atheros AR9271 on url
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a Toshiba MX35 laptop it's a little old but does the job. I'm have a problem getting the wireless to work. I can boot a live CD either Ubuntu 10.10 or Fedora 14 and they will see the wireless card. The card is Atheros Communications Inc. Atheros AR5001X+ Wireless Network Adapter (rev 01).
I have Ubuntu 9.10 installed and that is the OS that is having the problem seeing the wireless. The computer will not handle Ubuntu 10.10 (at least it won't handle the desktop effects under Ubuntu 10.10) but handles them just fine under 9.10 and that's why I have 9.10 installed. I really need the Wifi to work because I'm going to travel in a few days.
I am running openSUSE 11.3 updated with all the latest patches and I cannot connect to my wireless router. I am running Linux Mint 10 on the same type of notebook HP Compaq 6910p and it worked right after the install. If I take off the security WPA & WPA2 Personal I can connect. lspci -v | less shows this for my wireless card.

I am using the same settings for both notebooks just can't figure out why openSUSE 11.3 won't connect. I get the prompt to key in my password, I've even checked the box to show password to make sure I was keying it in correctly. Everything was good but it just goes right back to the password prompt after it fails trying to connect.
I just installed ubuntu 11.04 to compaq presario v2000.Everything works except wireless.

View 3 Replies View RelatedNo wireless networking. The ethernet works fine, and the wireless interface itself works well in Windows 7 (dual boot). Tried: Ndiswrapper, notoriously quirky, does not seem to work with the XP driver (the oldest driver available for the RTL8191SE). The linux driver offered on the manufacturer's website lacks any installation instructions. I have no clue how to install a linux driver. SUSE seems to have two network managers that are constantly complaining about control: Network Manager and Yast. Neither are great and I am left missing my Ubuntu.
However, my audio only seems to work on SUSE. I have tried almost every distro on this machine. Ubuntu lacked sound and wireless, Fedora played startup sounds, but would not play an mp3 or wav file (fiddling with the mixer did not help). And Fedora also lacked wireless support. PCLinuxOS, my favorite, lacked sound and wireless. Tried some oldies too. ELE, DSL, Puppy, Ubuntu Netbook remix, Vector, Browserpuppy, Crunchbang, Cruncheee (just for experimental sakes) and probably others I am not remembering. So far, installing a free linux distro has cost me 14 dvd-R's and countless hours of installing, reformatting and reinstalling. Part of me really wanted crunchbang to work, as I love the minimalism and blacked-out theme.
I need wireless network access. The wireless light remains red in Linux and pressing the key does nothing to start the device. In Windows 7 it always lights white and works perfectly. Why hasn't SUSE adopted a gui for ndiswrapper? Other distros have it. Why is my brand new laptop, which is by no means abnormal in make or configuration, not 100% supported natively by any Linux distro? I just updated to the new kernel yesterday. So I should be running the most modern operating system available. Yet good-ol Windows 7 is my only fully functional environment.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a Compaq Presario CQ60 laptop and have one of those wireless light indicators. For me the light glows orange when the wireless is OFF and blue when the wireless is ON. In Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic) the light was always orange, even if the Wireless was on, but my wireless worked right out of the box so I was grateful for that, but since upgrading to Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid) I've noticed that my wireless light alternates between orange and blue frequently and sometimes flashes madly when wireless activity is occurring.
I was wondering if there is a fix for this as it can get quite annoying, the light sometimes stays blue for a while but will ultimately keep going back to orange and vice-versa, my friend who also has a Compaq Presario CQ61 (Revised model of mine) has his wireless light constantly blinking orange and blue no matter what.The wireless itself works fine, I can connect to any wireless connection and use it without having to install anything else, so it does work out of the box, which again, I'm grateful for.The wireless adapter is a Atheros AR5001 Wireless network adapter. Do I need to install additional packages or drivers to get the wireless adapter to work properly?
I installed ubuntu 10.10 on my Compaq C700, but when I started it up, I am unable to enable wireless. While reading through other boards, it is apparently common for this computer. However, I have not seen anyone address how to enable wifi on ubuntu 10.10.

Now, if I ping the router the response times sometimes are okay but often fluctuate into the range of many hundreds or thousands of milliseconds. I have a Acer Revo R3610 nettop on which I installed oS11.3. It has an Atheros AR5001 wireless network adaptor.I'm getting very bad latency and throughput on with this card. In comparison my Thinkpad with Intel card achieves at least 10 times the throughput from the same location. Also when I boot my wifi will come up authenticate and then a few seconds later disconnect and reconnect. I've tried updating the kernel to 2.6.35 as one of the fixes was to improve the performance of the ath5k driver. I'm using wpa2 authentication.

Is there anything else I paste that will help determine the cause of the bad throughput. Browsing the web or copying files across the network is bordering unusable.
I installed SLED 11 (and openSuse 11.1 as well) but the wireless button(WIFI ON/OFF) which is next to power button of my laptop does not work. It worked in vista (formatted the HD and installed SLED 11 as soon as I bought the notebook ) the wireless driver is Ath5k. The button should actually light up the LED and if the Wireless card is active LED should be BLUE, and ORANGE if the wireless is disabled.. Now its always ORANGE!
I tried to capture the hardware address of the LED but it was a failure! (previously I configured Touchpad ON/OFF switch by myself writing a small script after retrieving values from dmesg)...
So the main issue I have is WIFI On/Off switch (and LED) doesn't work well...
I recently switched from Windows XP to a clean install Ubuntu Karmic Koala 9.10 but it seems to be quite a problem to get the wifi up and running. In Windows the nearby network all appeared in network connections but the same section in Ubuntu is empty. So I decided to go with the ndiswrapper guide to solve the problem with an unclaimed driver. After an entire day messing with my computer I'm still not close... Below follows excerpts taken from the Ndiswrapper guide with posted results from my computer. It seems like the network is disabled or unclaimed or both. What to do? I'm stuck after spending an entire day trying to install the wifi. I had no problems in Windows XP but it seems to be quite impossible in Ubuntu.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have been running FC8 on this IBM T23 with a D-Link wireless adapter. Using MadWifi this has worked fine with Network Manager disabled. But now I have nuked that installation and replaced it with FC10. Network Manager is nice, and I would like to use it. And it kind-of works. Network Manager recognizes my router and all my neighbor's routers, but I can't connect.

I am trying to get SME Server set up as a private server/gateway. Problem is no matter what I do I can only get one ethernet working at a time and only to the internet, not the local network. I tried both SME Server 7.4 and 8.0 beta 5 witht he same result. Now of course I checked the ethernet cards. The two I have now on it do work. One of them is the onboard ethernet the other one is in the second pci slot. They jsut don't work at the same time. (also I am familiar with SME and I had it configured correctly. Even if I messed up the order of the cards it is easy enough to just get up and switch the cables, reboot, etc.) I thought maybe there was a jumper setting or an over ride of some sort to let me use two ethernet cards. <I previously had all of this set up with an old HP computer (came with windows 98 originally.) But that computer decided it was time to retire to the road side.> It seems that it should just work. Any ideas on what I am missing or what I can do?
Edit:Spent another hour trying to get it to work and still nothing. It is picking up both ethernet cards just fine, I just updated sme 8 beta5 so the internet is working fine. I just can't get the local ethernet card to do anything at all, even though it is showing up as a green ok at boot. I checked the bios and I am not seeing anything there. It had an option to enable/disable LAN (which is enabled but I tried both and using to PCI ethernet cards. Didn't do anything different.) It has a Local LAN boot rom option, tried it enabled and disabled (Disabled now.) and nothing. I turned off the serial and parallel ports (doesn't make a difference either way.) I looked all over the motherboard and the only thing I can find is the jumper to reset the password. If a computer that was at least 12 years old could run SME and don't see why this one can't, it is half that age and a much better computer hardware wise.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI acquired an older hp compaq presario computer version 6310us, and initially installed mint, followed by Ubuntu 9.04. Neither one recognized the onboard ethernet port. I checked the bios, and LAN is enabled. It is also enabled in the drop down menu from the toolbar on the desktop. The cable works fine on other computers, and the light on the ethernet port flashes like it does when the cable is connected. I'm new to linux, so not sure what to do to get the connection working.
