I'm a totally rookie at all this. I installed Ubuntu 10.4 Netbook edition in an HP Mini 1116 NR computer--I used an SD card & UNetbootin) and the wireless router is not recognized. I've been pretty much googling and troubleshooting this problem for most of the day. I always get stuck at a dead end. This netbook does not have an ethernet adapter nor a CD-Rom drive, so I have no way of connecting to the internet w/out wireless. I am able to download things from my other laptop to the SD card.
1. When I enter sudo apt-get install build-essential at the terminal, I get "package not found."
2. When I try to install b43-fwcutter or bcmwl-kernel-source, it either won't work because I can't connect to the net or I get a "dkms dependency" issue.
3. So I tried to install the dkms pacakge and got a "gcc dependency" issue. After that, I come up with a dead end.
An alternative option, so I read, is to use ndiswrapper and download the HP wireless broadcom driver, but that driver is a .exe file and I read that ndiswrapper needs a .inf file and I can't seem to find one. Does it matter?

I'm new to Fedora, I used to have Ubuntu 10 and found that some software I required would not work properly so I decided to Fedora under recommendation from a friend. I really like it but when I installed Fedora 13 on my Netbook I found it difficult to set up my wireless connection.

I'm trying to find a command or application that will tell me what drivers my wifi card is using.
I've been googling for a while now and all I get in return for any query I try are articles about folks having wifi troubles.
The Ubuntu install works fine but my Windows install seems incapable of connecting. I've recently realised that I think it all started when I installed 10.04. I think 10.04 might have rewritten the firmware on the wifi module and now Windows can't connect. I'm not sure if this is possible but it is the only solution I can come up with considering that I've now tried 2 different version of Windows and they both have the same problem.
Anyway anyone know of a command or app I can use to discover which driver my card is using at the moment so that I can begin my investigations.

I have an HP mini 110 with Fedora 11 install. I installed the broadcom-wl and wl-kmod from yum but still no wireless. First I can't get the broadcom card to turn on using the slide switch on the front of the computer. The device is inactive in the network configuration-devices window. The card is not in the network configuration hardware window. When I try to add it manually, there is no entry for the card in the drop down list. I am new to Fedora but have used linux for years. Unfortunately this is my first attempt at wireless networking.
The posts and google stuff doesn't say much more than "yum install broadcom-wl" Can anyone point me into the right direction? I have a feeling I am missing something very simple, because this computer dual boots Linux Mint and wireless works flawlessly.

Just did an install and am loving Debian. I am having troubles with my card causing mini-freezes. I type and the input sometimes(every 30 seconds) stops and then catches up. This is really annoying. I figure it is the wireless driver because when I ran top -d 0.1 Ieee80211/1 or Ieee80211/0 was the main verdict during every stall. I have not had this problem with other distros, but came to Debian for stability. Any ideas on how to fix it?

I'm trying to find a driver for my wireless card (Atheros AR928X) and I think it's ath9k what I need. As far as I know there isn't a linux driver for it, so I installed ndiswrapper to use a windows driver instead. The problem is that when I type modprobe ndiswrapper I get "bash: modprobe: command not found" (even as root). I know I'm missing something about modprobe, but I can't find any help on google. Anyway, I installed ndisgtk next, because I thought it would be easier, but when I go to System> Administration> Windows Wireless Drivers I get a message "Unknown error".Do you have any ideas on how I'll make ndiswrapper work?

I have a persistent liveusb with ubuntu 9.10 that I installed using the method on [url]
I use it on a Dell Inspiron Mini 9 netbook (that boots Mac OS X from its SSD). An ubuntu persistent liveusb works just great for occasional linux development and testing, but ubuntu 9.10 will be EOL next year, and I want to stay current.
I've installed ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS on a liveusb using the method on [url]
After I've booted the liveusb, under the network menu I see this:
Wireless Networks
Device not ready
A menu appears that looks like a PCI card with a lock on it. I select the only item under that menu, "Install Drivers". This gives a dialog that says "No proprietary drivers are in use on this system. Proprietary drivers do not have public source code..." etc. Under Ubuntu 9.10, I could at this point select "Broadcom STA wireless driver" and click the "Activate" button, and it would work. So I did that in 10.04.1.
It says, "Downloading and installing driver..."
While it's doing this, the "kerneloops" menu item appears. Then a dialog that says,
Sorry, the package "bcmwl-kernel-source 5.60.48.36 +bdcom-0ubuntu3" failed to install or upgrade.
Then another dialog that says
SystemError: installArchives() failed.
What the heck is happening here?
Well, it turns out that the error messages are wrong. I restarted and the DM9/ubuntu 10.04.1 was able to connect to the wireless network.
tl;dr: Proprietary wireless driver installation works, but it claims that it doesn't.

I've read about all of the problems with the HP Mini's wireless and the Broadcom drivers. Running 10.04 LTS.
Code:
lspci -vnn | grep 14e4
01:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g [14e4:4315] (rev 01)
I have 2 drivers available to me under restricted hardware:
Broadcom B43 wireless driver
Broadcom STA wireless driver
I can get the B43 to connect and work, but not for more than a minute or so at a time. I see the following in the kernel log after the wifi adapter is activated:

just installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix on my new HP Mini 210 (info). Everything is working fine -- webcam, shortcut keys etc, but I'm having some difficulties connecting to our wireless network. When I click on the network panel item, there are no networks visible. Now, I also have Windows 7 Starter on the netbook (what I'm using right now) and that's able to connect to the network fine.

I want to start off with this: I installed Ubuntu on my HP Mini 1151nr, and it went well. But after installation, the only way I can connect to internet is by directly hooking up to my modem. My wireless is disabled, and I do not think that I have the drivers for it.
The "Additional Drivers" found two Broadcom 802.11b/g drivers, but when I downloaded it came up with errors and didn't work.

I successfully did a dual boot on a HP Mini 1001TU netbook. However, the wireless doesn't connect. Over the internet, someone had a similar problem with his Dell notebook using a Karmic and said that Karmic has a bug that doesn't install the "Broadcom STA wireless Driver" and recommended a prerequisite wired internet connection then the following command line:
sudo apt-get update
sudo-get -reinstall install bcmwl-kernel-source
Followed by a reboot which solves the problem.
I would like to try this out but the netbook only accepts a USB -router connection but my router doesn't have a USB port.

I am not able to connect to a wireless network with the HP mini 110 series. When going to the wireless network menu, no networks shows up. if the solution could be described in a very easy "how-to" or just be made into a patch (if there is pathes on ubuntu) it would be nice.
System specifications from HP:

My new netbook, Acer Aspire One 533, has a Broadcom wireless card, which lspci identifies as BCM 4313. Having spent a lot of time trying to make this work in Fedora 14 I went to IRC on #bcm-users where I was told that I probably need brcm80211. The only information I can find about this in Fedora is a list thread at http://lists.fedoraproject.org/piper...er/002728.html. It would seem that if this is still not available I must try to build compat-wireless, which sounds pretty scarey. Is there any way I can get the brcm80211 driver? I know that there will be an associated risk, but a netbook without a wireless connection is fairly useless, and I hate to have to depend on Windows.

I just installer Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook Remix on my Compaq Mini 700EL, the ubuntu website says that everything works very well including the wireless. But for some reason the list of connection doesn't appear at all. It just says "device not ready" This is driving me a little nuts. It appears that the Broadcom drivers are installed. I typed lspci on the terminal and it says that the computer loads a Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g (rev 01)
I also downloaded the drivers even though they should be already in it. But I'm not sure.

I recently installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix on my Dell Inspiron Mini 10, and for some reason it isn't detecting any wireless networks. The wireless works perfectly fine when I boot to Windows XP on the netbook, but not when I'm using Ubuntu. I tried troubleshooting using this htmlAt the "check for device recognition" step, the terminal tells me that it's disabled, but as far as I can tell there isn't a physical switch that allows me to turn the wireless on or off, and again, it works perfectly fine when I use XP. What should I do?
