I'm trying to find a command or application that will tell me what drivers my wifi card is using.
I've been googling for a while now and all I get in return for any query I try are articles about folks having wifi troubles.
The Ubuntu install works fine but my Windows install seems incapable of connecting. I've recently realised that I think it all started when I installed 10.04. I think 10.04 might have rewritten the firmware on the wifi module and now Windows can't connect. I'm not sure if this is possible but it is the only solution I can come up with considering that I've now tried 2 different version of Windows and they both have the same problem.
Anyway anyone know of a command or app I can use to discover which driver my card is using at the moment so that I can begin my investigations.

I'm trying to find a driver for my wireless card (Atheros AR928X) and I think it's ath9k what I need. As far as I know there isn't a linux driver for it, so I installed ndiswrapper to use a windows driver instead. The problem is that when I type modprobe ndiswrapper I get "bash: modprobe: command not found" (even as root). I know I'm missing something about modprobe, but I can't find any help on google. Anyway, I installed ndisgtk next, because I thought it would be easier, but when I go to System> Administration> Windows Wireless Drivers I get a message "Unknown error".Do you have any ideas on how I'll make ndiswrapper work?

I was trying to use my other computer that has Windows XP, and was running it on the LiveCDI could not get on the internet! I had no wireless connections, when my laptop (Running Ubuntu already) can pick up the signals. I tried to put in my WEP, MAC, and my SSID and I could still not get it to work. No internet connections when I press the "Triangle Internet button at the top". What Am I doing wrong? I am using a Zyxel G-720 v3 wireless adapter to connect (worked fine with Windows XP).

I am very new to this and tried searching for this problem in the forums but have not find anything. When I installed ubuntu (formatted HD), the installer gave an error but then seemed to proceed as normal and everything installed (from CD). However, when I boot up from Live CD all my wireless works fine (it detects networks, connects, etc.) When I boot up without the CD it says networking disabled and gives me no other options.

I have a Netgear USB wireless NIC and neither Ubuntu or Lubuntu Live images can see it. I have tried copying wlan from another machine and installing the packages, but that doesn't work.
I recently seen a thread showing what the file is that is missing in the Lucid live images that was present on the Karmic and earlier images, but I can't find it nor remember what the file was called.

I've installed OpenSUSE with both DVD and liveCD. When I'm in Open SUSE booted from the CD/DVD, my wireless usb is recognized and I can connect to the network using the icon at the bottom right bar. When I install Open SUSE to my hard drive, my wireless usb seems not to be recognized and I'm not offered to connect to a wireless network.

I've been using Linux for about 2 years now, mostly Ubuntu & derivatives, but I've also tried Fedora, Mandriva, and others. I wanted to give CentOS a try because I'm very interested in going for a Linux+ or similar certification, and so I'm looking to start learning how to configure & maintain Linux servers and so on. I have a friend who's a Linux sysadmin, and he recommended CentOS as a good learning tool.
Anyway, I've only got a wireless connection in my office at home (the actual cable modem is downstairs) so I intentionally chose a wireless adapter that would work with Linux -- it has a Realtek RLT8187 chip, for which there is support built into the kernel, or so I've read. It has worked out of the box in just about every distro I've tried, and indeed it worked OOTB when I tried out the CentOS 5.5 live CD.
However, when I actually installed the CentOS to my hard drive it no longer worked -- I have only a greyed out option for a wired connection (presumably since my motherboard has an ethernet adapter, but there is no connection). Why the wireless would work in the live session but not after install? Is there a firmware file or something I need to track down? I did look on this page, but it doesn't mention anything about RTL8187.

I am super new to linux. I have tried a lot of distros but went with OpenSUSE11.3. I have both gnome and kde live cd. Now to the problem, When I put in the live cd and boot - the computer finds the wireless card and lets me connect to the internet. This works on both versions. But after clicking on the install icon the wireless no longer starts and then I cant get it to work. Maybe its something I should be doing. After all I am new to this.

I just installed Linux Mint 9 as a dual boot install with Win XP. Trying to activate wireless network card driver and video driver. Pops up: "You are not authorized to perform this action".How do I get authorized?
Now every time I boot Win XP, the Internet Explorer menu bar is all blacked out and goofy. If I log out and back in it corrects itself. If I reboot it's blacked out again. Re-installed IE8. Still blacks out. Also Firefox in Win XP crashes expectantly. It has NEVER crashed on me previously.

No wireless networking. The ethernet works fine, and the wireless interface itself works well in Windows 7 (dual boot). Tried: Ndiswrapper, notoriously quirky, does not seem to work with the XP driver (the oldest driver available for the RTL8191SE). The linux driver offered on the manufacturer's website lacks any installation instructions. I have no clue how to install a linux driver. SUSE seems to have two network managers that are constantly complaining about control: Network Manager and Yast. Neither are great and I am left missing my Ubuntu.
However, my audio only seems to work on SUSE. I have tried almost every distro on this machine. Ubuntu lacked sound and wireless, Fedora played startup sounds, but would not play an mp3 or wav file (fiddling with the mixer did not help). And Fedora also lacked wireless support. PCLinuxOS, my favorite, lacked sound and wireless. Tried some oldies too. ELE, DSL, Puppy, Ubuntu Netbook remix, Vector, Browserpuppy, Crunchbang, Cruncheee (just for experimental sakes) and probably others I am not remembering. So far, installing a free linux distro has cost me 14 dvd-R's and countless hours of installing, reformatting and reinstalling. Part of me really wanted crunchbang to work, as I love the minimalism and blacked-out theme.
I need wireless network access. The wireless light remains red in Linux and pressing the key does nothing to start the device. In Windows 7 it always lights white and works perfectly. Why hasn't SUSE adopted a gui for ndiswrapper? Other distros have it. Why is my brand new laptop, which is by no means abnormal in make or configuration, not 100% supported natively by any Linux distro? I just updated to the new kernel yesterday. So I should be running the most modern operating system available. Yet good-ol Windows 7 is my only fully functional environment.

For some reason, ubuntu cannot find local wireless networks. In fact, the Broadcom wireless card Ralink RT5390 802.11b/g/n seems to be incompatible with ubuntu. I've tried numerous 'solutions' on the Internet, but none of them seem to work on my computer. Tutorials I've visited have recommended downloading the b43 drivers from the Synaptic package manager and also the bcmwl-kernal-source package. Nevertheless, the wireless never turns on and Additional Drivers never shows anything at all. After several exasperating hours of trying to get my wireless running I've decided to turn to the forum for help. I'm sure there's probably more information I should supply, but I'm honestly not sure what that would be.
