Debian :: Whenever Boot - Internet Connection Kicks In Automatically
May 9, 2011
I've installed Debian squeeze using the net installer and while beginning the installation I loaded the 'ppp-udeb' module to connect to the internet for accessing the Debian mirrors during the installation. Now, whenever I boot into Debian, internet connection kicks in automatically. I would want to have control over when to start the internet connection. I don't want it to be triggered during my login.
I am new to Linux and Debian. I have Compaq Presario R3000 laptop, which is 5 years old now. I have RealTek RTL8139 family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC. Currently I have a broadband connection at home. I have dual boot Windows XP Professional and Debian (which I installed a week ago through CD). I have done some preliminary tests for the network and I am posting the screenshots for the tests (e.g. lspci, ifconfig, etc.). I also did two more commands. For 'cat /etc/network/ifstate' the output was 'No such file or directory'. Same output was for the command 'cat /etc/network/options'.
1 linksys router: gets the net from PPPOE and give the network DHCP. The router IP is 192.168.1.1. 1 windows laptop that work wireless and wired. 1 debian desktop that work wired and not working wireless. THe problem with the debian desktop is like this: I have a TP-Link TL-WN321G installed and found by lsusb command. I make a wireless connection WPA Personal (just like the router settings) it says i am connected to the wl network but no internet connection. the route command give me this:
[code]....
I tryed with wicd who said that the connection is WEP (and it's not, it is setup to WPA on the router and the network-manager conncetion) and when i try to connect i get bad password. I tryed with network-manager uninstalled and no chance.
Today, I have an ADSL box which is my gateway to internet (192.168.0.1).
I have a Raspberry pi (RPI) which I use as a dhcp & dns server (192.168.0.2).
Recently my mobile phone operator installed a 4G antenna beside my home, and the bandwidth and latency are much better with my mobile phone than with my internet provider (ADSL).
I would like to install a wifi dongle on my RPI (I would get wlan0 & eth0 interfaces)
When RPI detect my shared phone connection (tethering) I would like RPI to automatically route internet:
- from authorized devices on my network to my mobile connexion (wlan0 -> mobile phone). - from other devices to the standard ADSL internet (eth0 -> ADSL box).
I don't want any device to use the shared 4G connexion, best would be authorized devices to be selected by MAC address. How I should properly setup such a network ?
I am running Ubuntu 10.10, and I would like to use my computer to share the internet connection from an ethernet port. For example, I would like to set up my computer as a wireless access point so I can create a network that other computers can connect to for internet.
connect to the Internet through my newly bought USB adapter, and it works just fine now... But - after boot I can't connect to the Internet before i open a terminal and type
either: sudo modprobe ndiswrapper - from the ndiswrapper-1.56 folder
or: sudo iwlist wlan0 scan - from the root
Both commands are some I learned during installation of the USB device - I don't know if any other commands would work;
It would be nice if my device connected automatically - is this possible?
I am working on a cross-platform application for Linux ,Apple and Windows, so I have a full tower system with four SATA hard drives that be selected with a switch, so that I can change drives and operating systems at will. -sort of makes me a jack of linux systems, but master of none. It's important to mention this, because it shows the strangeness of the problem as it is isolated to Debian* systems.
So where does debian/ubuntu get it's information to establish a network connection? How do I rectify the problem? I can hardly blame the hardware (RTL8111B), because the problem is isolated to Debian systems.
I am planning to install debian in my pc,.I have xp in one partition and want to install debian in 4gb partition (+500mb for swap).PC: intel p4, 3.0ghz, 1gb ram i install debian from net-install cd without internet connection? If so, after installing the cd can i connect to internet using my usb modem (T-mobile/Huawei modem UMG1831). In case of ubuntu i heard of an app to switch the device between mass storage and modem. How in Debian?
what do u feel now on ur Debian 6? did any body tried debian 6 BSD kernel? i use now ubuntu but i want to try Debian but due to internet connection problem
I have a pc with debian lenny, this machine doesn't have internet connection, when I need a new package I installed it with dpkg, updating phyton I got some broken dependences and some services doesn't work properly. I have another pc with debian lenny that is updated, my question is: what is the process to extract the packages downloaded in the pc-B, and create a mobile repository?
I am running Debian on my server (OpenMediaVault) and i am connected to a VPN service, using openvpn. BUT! How do i make sure that the internet connection, stays through my VPN service, or gets blocked, if the connection through the VPN tunnel fails? Jeah, yeah call me paranoid..
I have read this: [URL] ....
I don't know how i use the source code. Is there a script somewhere i can just download? And i don't want the LAN connection to be blocked.. only outgoing traffic!!
I followed this guide for my Acer Aspire One A150, and got wireless and suspend working fine:[URL]pendtoRAMThe only problem is that wireless is dead after resuming from suspend. I have to type:/etc/init.d/networking restart and after that everything works just fine and I get internet again. Is there a way to automate that process on resuming from suspend, so that I won`t have to type it manually each time?
I have been using this fresh Debian 8.2 install for 3 days without any network problems.
What I did this morning :
- Booted in my windows partition and rebooted immediately just to remove the system from the sleep state - Mounted a NTFS hard drive and copied some file to my .wine drive_c
Thats when I noticed that my connection was down.
I verified all the physical layer. My laptop has access to the internet tried to connect on an another router with eht0, changed the wire, nothing worked.
It seems like the interface can't get a dhcp ipv4 address even when I try to force is with dhclient, I get no offer when my laptop works just fine.
- Booted on my windows partition without changing any connection and my internet was working. - Booted back on debian still not working...
When launching any program (iceweasel, ssh, dropbox) that requires internet connection as a normal user it does not connect.
However if I try launching them as root it does. Sometimes, I have to manually disable/enable wifi and then reboot in order to access Internet, sometimes it works and sometimes it does not.
I have Code: Select all3.16.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.16.7-ckt20-1+deb8u1 (2015-12-14) x86_64 GNU/Linux
My resolv.conf has the following permissions
Code: Select allsudo ls -l /etc/resolv.conf -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 26 Jan 12 05:03 /etc/resolv.conf My Code: Select allsudo lspci is Code: Select all00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Haswell-ULT DRAM Controller (rev 09) 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Haswell-ULT Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09) 00:03.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation Haswell-ULT HD Audio Controller (rev 09)
I recently installed Debian "Squeeze" onto a Thinkpad T420, alongside Windows 7. During the installation Debian was unable to detect my NIC (Intel 82579LM), but otherwise the installation completed normally. I've installed the required e1000e drivers, and added "alias eth0 e1000e" to the modules file. Using lspci I can see that the computer detects the card, but still fails to load the drivers for it.
I'm at a bit of a loss, as this is my first time using Linux. After a bit of searching it looks like the 2.6.38 kernel resolves the issue with this card, so I guess that's my next step.Unfortunately all the installation instructions I've found assume an internet connection. Is there a simple way to update the kernel without a connection, or -even better- an install disc with 2.6.38 so I can start from scratch?
I rebooted my vServer (Debian 8) and it doesn't came back up. Well, I used the rescue console on my server and the server seems to be running fine, except the network was broken. So I tried 'ifconfig' but nothing came up. So I tried to enable my interface with 'ifconfig venet0 up', and now it appears in my ifconfig list
Code: Select allroot@i67svof:/var/www# ifconfig venet0Â Â Link encap:UNSPECÂ HWaddr 00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00Â Â Â Â Â Â UP BROADCAST POINTOPOINT RUNNING NOARPÂ MTU:1500Â Metric:1 Â Â Â Â Â RX packets:557 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 Â Â Â Â Â TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 Â Â Â Â Â collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 Â Â Â Â Â RX bytes:36463 (35.6 KiB)Â TX bytes:0 (0.0 B)
My HWaddr doesn't look that well :) 'ip addr' prints this result:
Code: Select allroot@i67svof:/var/www# ip addr 1: lo: <LOOPBACK> mtu 65536 qdisc noop state DOWN Â Â link/loopback 00:00:00:00:00:00 brd 00:00:00:00:00:00 2: venet0: <BROADCAST,POINTOPOINT,NOARP,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc noqueue state UNKNOWN
These are the last lines in /var/log/syslog:
Code: Select allroot@i67svof:/var/www# tail /var/log/syslog Feb 20 11:34:16 i67svof systemd[1]: Stopping memcached daemon... Feb 20 11:34:16 i67svof systemd[1]: Stopping Network Name Resolution... [Code] .....
And finally my network config in /etc/network/interfaces
Code: Select all# Auto generated lo interface auto lo iface lo inet loopback # Auto generated venet0 interface auto venet0
I can connect to the internet on Win7 without issue. Boot to Ubuntu 10.10 amd64 & it works sometimes & sometimes it doesn't.
I've attached 4 screen photos; 2 when internet is working (Working ifcomfig & Working route -n) & 2 when internet is NOT-working (NonWorking ifcomfig & NonWorking route -n).
The 1st I notice when looking @ working ifconfig is line 3 under eth0, inet addr:192.168.1.5 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0, is missing on NonWorking ifconfig.
I am using Empathy IM client to access to gadu gadu and to message with my friends. The strange thing that is happening is that I keep on being connected and then disconnected and then connected again even if I am continuously connected to my internet connection (no problem when surfing or using skype for example)It also seems to come only from me because when my girlfriend is using the same gadu gadu on her windows laptop simultaneously, she doesn´t get disconnected (whether when she is at home and using the same connection as I am or when she is outside, meaning that it doesn´t seem to come from the whole gadu gadu network)maybe it has something to do with the ports that gadu gadu is using but it is strange that sometimes it is working for a period of time and then not and then again.
I have just installed Debian Squeeze on my spare computer (dual booted with Ubuntu 11.04) and I cannot connect to the internet using Squeeze. Due to my ISP, I have to manually connect this computer and on Ubuntu copying and pasting a text file such as this into the terminal works with no problems. What do I need to do to manually configure my Squeeze internet connection?
I replaced my motherboard and processor but am keeping my old hard drive without reformatting it. Things work well except that I cannot connect to the internet. I am thinking that I just need to reconfigure the connection to see the new network hardware. I tried /etc/init.d/networking restart but that doesn't do anything. What am I missing? By the way it is a wired connection - not wireless.
I'm having difficulties mounting an FTP address to my file system automatically during boot. After a bit of research I have discovered a package called curlftpfs, I've installed this package using aptitude and I had no errors.
I've successfully mounted an FTP address manually using curlftpfs at the command line and proved to myself that this is working as it should...However, I can't get this to mount automatically and I am receiving the following error during boot when I try and mount it through /etc/fstab...
Error connecting to ftp: Failed to connect to (IP address of server): Network is unreachable
My research indicates this package should be able to do this.
I'm still a learner when it comes to Linux, but could this be because TCP/IP services are not started at the time of mounting the filesystems? I've tried a continuous ping at this computer whilst it is booting and I don't get a response until after /etc/fstab has been processed. If this is the reason, can I start them these processes earlier?
Another option would be to have a script/command run when the computer boots, but prior to MySQL loading. If this is possible, it would also satisfy my problems.
I have succesflly installed OpenVPN server and clients(followed tuts). Everything is great, however when I have openvpn connection established on the clients I loose the basic internet connection in the browser, but my clients can see the vpn server(even I can ssh to the server via the openvpn client ip). I am guessing that all the traffic is routed through the server. I am just not knowledgable enough with routing , iptables and internet sharing. I am using tun based setup on OpenVPN. I am just not even sure if this is a server or a client issue, sorry for ignorance and illeteracy.
I manage to install debian on my flex 10 (lenovo), but now internet is not working, i can see the network, but even being able to connect to them i can't access the net...
AMD 64 Upgrade to testing last night killed my internet connection. The lan works, I can ping the dns server from my IP, however no mail, browser possible. Is something in testing broken again?
I performed an update that has caused issues with my wireless. Errors relating to wireless firmware missing and consequently no internet connection.
I've been through this before with my 2008 macbook air BCM card whose firmware isn't included in installs. In the past I've manually installed the b43-fwcutter package an extracted some firmware... That doesn't seem to be working here.
I've used [URL]i ... cefirmware to troubleshoot. I have not been able to get b43 or wl to work.
I attempted to install the "firmware-b43-installer_015-14.1_all.deb" package; however it depends on wget to download and install "broadcom-wl-5.100.138.tar.bz2" from wlfinger.com.
So I manually installed b43-fwcutter and used it to extract the broadcom-wl-5 file referenced....
modprobe wl says wl doesn't exist and modprobe b43 doesn't seem to work.
Code: Select allsudo dpkg -i broadcom-sta-dkms_5.100.82.112-8_all.deb Setting up broadcom-sta-dkms (5.100.82.112-8) ... Loading new broadcom-sta-5.100.82.112 DKMS files... Building only for 3.2.0-4-amd64 Module build for the currently running kernel was skipped since the kernel source for this kernel does not seem to be installed.
I tried something from broadcom that produced make errors "/lib/modules/3.2.0-4-amd64/build: No such file or directory"... I think this means I need some kernel development packages, broadcom says:
Code: Select allOn Fedora install 'kernel-devel' (Development Package for building kernel modules to match the kernel) from the Package Manager (System-> Administration-> Add/Remove Software).
On Ubuntu, you will need headers and tools. Try these commands: # apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-generic # apt-get build-dep linux
I'm having trouble install this stuff without the net and not sure installing generic headers and build-dep outside of apt-get is the way to go... linux-headers-3.2.0-4-amd64_3.2.57-3+deb7u2_amd64.deb has alot of dependencies that would take me a while to find and download.
