AMD 64 Upgrade to testing last night killed my internet connection. The lan works, I can ping the dns server from my IP, however no mail, browser possible. Is something in testing broken again?
View 5 RepliesI've been connecting to the Internet via Ubuntu 8.10 on my Toshiba laptop fine for ages now, but today it has stopped working. Yesterday an update came through relating to DHCP and, like all other updates, I installed it. And now my laptop can see the wireless router but it cannot connect to the Internet. (As I always install the recommended Ubuntu updates I didn't look closely at exactly what the update said, but I did see DHCP in the title, so this is why I suspect my connection is now broken.) Or can anyone tell me how to undo yesterday's update? I really wish now that Ubuntu had a utility similar to Windows System Restore.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI updated today and naturally removed the old nVidia driver, compiled it again after a reboot, and then rebooted again for good measure. I can log into KDE4, but all I get is a cursor and a solid black background. I deleted the ~/.kde, ~/.local, and quite a few other directories from my normal user account using the shell so KDE would reconfigure my settings when I logged in again, but it's the same problem. I went into ~/.kde/share/config/kwinrc and added the "Compositing" section with "Enabled=false" to rule out compositing. Now when I log into the system I get the default KDE4 wallpaper and a mouse cursor, but nothing else. I believe the latest update broke KDE4, or am I missing something? I have recreated my xorg.conf as well, and only set it to use the nVidia driver. So what can I do now?

The router IP is 192.168.1.1. 1 windows laptop that work wireless and wired. 1 debian desktop that work wired and not working wireless. THe problem with the debian desktop is like this: I have a TP-Link TL-WN321G installed and found by lsusb command. I make a wireless connection WPA Personal (just like the router settings) it says i am connected to the wl network but no internet connection. the route command give me this:

I tryed with wicd who said that the connection is WEP (and it's not, it is setup to WPA on the router and the network-manager conncetion) and when i try to connect i get bad password. I tryed with network-manager uninstalled and no chance.
I rebooted my vServer (Debian 8) and it doesn't came back up. Well, I used the rescue console on my server and the server seems to be running fine, except the network was broken. So I tried 'ifconfig' but nothing came up. So I tried to enable my interface with 'ifconfig venet0 up', and now it appears in my ifconfig list

About an hour ago i did an update on my Debian Squeeze. After the update was completed my LAN connection stopped working.. now i have to connect my computer to my router with a usb cable instead with my ethernet cable.. also, on the network connection, on the wired network section it says that the device(ethernet) has not been managed..

And there are various services that require external access, like, vpn (openvpn), a java/web system, ssh, rdp(windows).
fileServer(by vpn).
All is running ok in IPV4.Maybe, the solution is a NAT 6to4. We know this is the future, no more public IPV4.
When I make a vpn connection to an openvpn server, I loose the internet connection.
The VPN works all right.

I am using Empathy IM client to access to gadu gadu and to message with my friends. The strange thing that is happening is that I keep on being connected and then disconnected and then connected again even if I am continuously connected to my internet connection (no problem when surfing or using skype for example)It also seems to come only from me because when my girlfriend is using the same gadu gadu on her windows laptop simultaneously, she doesn´t get disconnected (whether when she is at home and using the same connection as I am or when she is outside, meaning that it doesn´t seem to come from the whole gadu gadu network)maybe it has something to do with the ports that gadu gadu is using but it is strange that sometimes it is working for a period of time and then not and then again.

Due to my ISP, I have to manually connect this computer and on Ubuntu copying and pasting a text file such as this into the terminal works with no problems.What do I need to do to manually configure my Squeeze internet connection?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI replaced my motherboard and processor but am keeping my old hard drive without reformatting it. Things work well except that I cannot connect to the internet. I am thinking that I just need to reconfigure the connection to see the new network hardware. I tried /etc/init.d/networking restart but that doesn't do anything. What am I missing? By the way it is a wired connection - not wireless.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm going to start using Debian as my desktop system rather than Ubuntu since I'm not really liking all the crazy eye candy and just wanted a fast and simple system. My main problem is networking, I guess I'll start off with my system specs and other information for problem solving.
My specs are:
- Intel Core i7 2600K CPU
- Gigabyte Z68X-UD3P-B3 Motherboard
- 8GB DDR3 1600Mhz RAM
I have a Realtek RTL8111/8168B Ethernet Adapter builtin to my motherboad which I am using, I could only get a basic connection, by basic I mean that it allowed me to connect to my local area network but not the internet. I then modified /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf to change to managed=true this allowed me to use the internet, but the problem is, that it is a very unstable connection, the speed is very slow and it drops a lot! I have to carry on running /etc/init.d/network-manager restart twice to get my connection back, which lasts for about a minute.

I would like to know if it is possible (and, if so, how I would go about doing so) to temporarily limit my Internet connection on a Linux box.
I am developing some new features for one of my Web sites, and I want to see how it performs when using a slower Internet connection. Although it's great for most aspects of my job to have a lightning-fast connection (around 25000-30000 kbps download and 20000-25000 kbps upload speeds), it really makes it difficult to know even what average users might experience when using some of the aspects of our Web site.
I have Linux Mint installed in VirtualBox on my computer, and I'd like to find some way to potentially temporarily "trick" that installation into using a much slower connection to the Internet for testing purposes.
I have no idea how I managed this, but I am able to connect to the internet but NetworkManager doesn't show any connection. This means that until I kill it, I cannot log in with Pidgin, because it is waiting for a connection.
Do I disable NetworkManager completely or do I try to make it recognize that I am connected to the Internet? If the latter, then how should I go about? (Please let me know which files I need to show you, because I know I've messed around with a couple).
Root LUKS to be broken by apt-get update? This did happen to me on 3 different laptops, both on previous install (from Debian 8.0), and also on clean installs (Debian 8.1), repeatedly.
When I reboot, grub starts, but then it cannot find the root file system (I end up with the emergency console).

I have been having problems with Squeeze last day or so, but thought would do all system updates available in hope this would stop the system crashes only to find that upon reboot my dock of choice, Cairo-Dock, which is set to auto start puts a message on screen saying it has no plugins available and that it will not run as a result. And it just won`t run. The update included updates for Cairo Dock and it`s plugins, which it seems have all updated correctly and package manager says every available plugin IS installed as it was before, what I can do to correct this annoying issue?

I had some trouble with the netinst CD and I had to install lenny with the 6DVDs instead. My internet connection only works after I edit the interfaces and resolv.conf files manually. So my question is: can I do that from the netinst CD before it actually needs the connection to install everything? (otherwise I'll just need to use the DVDs.

My usual aptitude safe-upgrade routine has not throw any errors. I do remember a libxcb-* package updating (or installing?) on the last run. This is the only relevant package I can recall.
I have an older system that has been running testing for about 4 years. Originally I was running testing for several packages that were not yet available in stable. However, now that this system has a more crucial role in the network I have considered moving it to stable in hopes that it I can gain some insurance on it's uptime. It is important to note that I have never had a problem with the testing distribution and would be quite content to continue running it; I do want to know my options though.
I have not yet updated the system since the stable release of squeeze, I am considering to change my sources from testing to stable and just let apt take care of the rest. Anyone have any experience with such a thing? After searching Google I have found some solutions to force a downgrade, but that is really not what needs to be done here. I suppose I should have switched my sources to squeeze some time ago and this probably would have worked itself out.
A similar question is what happens a couple of years from now when another release happens. Have you had good luck updating from old stable to stable? I've run testing on several machines now for several years and have went through freezes and dist-upgrades several times with no major problems at all. Will I see the same stability if I move to the stable distribution?
Currently I use openSUSE but the 6 months release cycle is starting to bug me a bit so yesterday I have tried Debian Testing daily snapshot created on 20-11-2010, using KDE desktop (I am a KDE fun). All goes well until I try to make a pppoe using KDE's module network manager.
I created the pppoe connection with user and password but I got 2 problems:
- After I have created the connection it doesn't appear along with "Auto eth0" above the button manage connections.
- The pppoe connection is not established (both password and username are correct).
I know that I could use pppoeconf or ceni for that matter, but I am new to debian as I where new to openSUSE 4 years ago and I am still learning, so please don't tell to use them I just want to know if there's a way to use network manager from kde 4.4.5 to establish a pppoe connection (you could name it the GUI way, no worries I like using the console as well). Under openSUSE I have a program called qinternet that helps me with pppoe connection is there something similar under Debian?
Today i`ve updated kernel packages to version 3.0.0. on Debian testing. After that- updated grub. But after all this the old one kernel version[2.6.39-3] is booting. What can i do?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to set up my Intel Wireless 3945ABG (which is supported in the kernel) and I don't understand where to start if I want to use systemd to do this.
I've installed my Debian (Stretch Alpha4) base system using the wireless to download the necessary components but when I boot into the system I need to set up the wireless card separately.
I would prefer to be able to install wireless without the requirement of connecting via ethernet so no package installs other than what is downloaded by the installer.
I can't even find documentation on this specific issue because everyone seems to reference /etc/network/interfaces which AFAIK is not supported in systemd. How do I configure a wireless card using only systemd?
After the latest update of network-manager-gnome to version 1.1.90-3 , I see that I have to start the nm-applet in Testing from a terminal, otherwise I can't bring up my wired connection.
The usual nmcli networking on command is failing to connect, also restarting the network-manager.service with systemctl doesn't do anything, the only way to connect at this time is indeed to manually start the nm-applet from a terminal.
I've also spotted this message in the logs:

I've been working on the setup of a FTP server on my Debian system for the whole afternoon. But I can't get it straight! Normally I get it working in just a second, but it's been a while I guess.
I installed only proftpd-basic and it's default dependencies. Should be enough right?
My configuration files are as follows:
I created the user zeitgeist, gave it a password, group and a homedir. Group of the user is nogroup and the homedir is correct with the 755 permission. My port 21 for FTP is open I tested it with nmap -p 21 [ip-address].
My Filezilla client tells me that at first he is connecting, then the connection is established, And then the connection is closed by server.
For anyone using Blueman with Testing (Squeeze), todays Python upgrade to version 2.6 stops it from working due to a Blueman bug. This has been fixed in blueman version 1.21-4, which you can install from SID if you don't want to wait the 10 days for the normal migration.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am running testing (with fluxbox) and my keyboard periodically freezes, meaning whatever I type in it doesn't respond. This lasts a few seconds (can be 2-3 or sometimes even more like 10) and one's it comes back I get all the keystrokes I was typing during the freeze. The frequency of the freezes can be like 4-5 times every hour and are very annoying. I can't seem to relate them to anything, they can occur during heavy usage but also when the box is doing absolutely nothing but waiting lazily for me to type some google search terms.
Can anybody help me track this problem down? At the moment I am using a wireless keyboard but this must be unrelated since I tested a couple of other keyboards (both wireless and wired) and the problem persists.

View 2 Replies View RelatedAfter doing a aptitude full-upgrade I no longer have the Debian menu showing in the Openbox menu. According to Obmenu, Debian is listed; it's just not showing when I right click. The upgrade brought a new version of Openbox so I assume that has something to do with it.
View 9 Replies View RelatedAfter the last update in testing, (02/21/16), my sound stopped, (it did have an unfixed issue with the jacks and muting, things would be muted on reboot, until I plugged in something, then removed the plug from the front jack), I have never had a sound issue, so I am a lot lost here...
Here is what I know... If I use speaker-test as root, I hear sound... If I use speaker-test as my normal user account, (non root), I see no errors in the term window, but hear no sound... To me this says permissions issue, but I am a member of audio.
I'm trying to install Debian-testing to an ASUS 1018P netbook on which I have successfully installed Arch in the past. I'm installing from an external DVD drive and when I get to the point of network configuration it fails. I'm connected via Ethernet via eth0 which is recognized. Here is the last part of the ouput:
