Debian :: Why Only Root Has Internet Connection And Other Users Don't

Jan 12, 2016

When launching any program (iceweasel, ssh, dropbox) that requires internet connection as a normal user it does not connect.

However if I try launching them as root it does. Sometimes, I have to manually disable/enable wifi and then reboot in order to access Internet, sometimes it works and sometimes it does not.

I have Code: Select all3.16.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.16.7-ckt20-1+deb8u1 (2015-12-14) x86_64 GNU/Linux

My resolv.conf has the following permissions

Code: Select allsudo ls -l /etc/resolv.conf

Ubuntu :: Wireless Internet For Non Root Users?

May 27, 2010

I've been intrested in linux for the past few months. I'm using Ubuntu 9.x version on my laptop. I'm able to connect to wireless internet as a root user. However when I login as a non root user, I'm not able to connect to wifi. The NetworkManager program doesn't load at all. I've checked the permissions of /usr/sbin/NetworkManager file, it was 755. I did some googling and tried setting 'set user id' for it, resulting in 4755 perm. But still, I can't open up the NetworkManager utility to connect to the WiFi. But I've no problem logging as a root user. I just don't want to connect to Internet as a root user.

Debian Configuration :: Connection WPA Personal Says Connected To Wl Network But No Internet Connection

Debian Installation :: Different Locales For Root And Users

Mar 30, 2015

I've just installed a Debian wheezy and I'm experiencing some issues regarding the "locales". No matter what I've tried (ran "dpkg-reconfigure locales" and restarted my session, edited "/etc/default/locale" then ran "locale-gen") to update the locales, running "locale" in a root shell or as a regular user returns different results.

In a root shell, the result is the right one (similar to "/etc/default/locale").

I do not understand why locales values are different in one case or another.

As a side question, what is the correct syntax for /etc/default/locale ? Is it case sensitive (I've encountered "en_US.utf8" and "en_US.UTF-8") ? Are double quotes mandatory (encountered values with or without double quotes) ?

user@pc ~ cat /etc/default/locale

Code: Select all#  File generated by update-locale
LANG=en_US.UTF-8
LANGUAGE=en_US.UTF-8
LC_CTYPE="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_NUMERIC=fr_FR.UTF-8
LC_TIME=en_GB.UTF-8

Debian :: Other Users Cannot Access Internet With FF

Mar 8, 2010

Debian 5.02 on an AMD 64. I removed iceweasel and installed Firefox. On my account, I can access the net ok from FF, but when I login as another user, I cannot get out.

During the iceweasel removal, I suddenly got dumped out. Trying to recover I ended up restarting the box. I then again went to the root and 'aptitude remove iceweasel' and it came back ok. Then I installed FF per [url]. This worked fine on my 32 bit laptop btw. I even added a guest acct and FF worked, but not so on my 64 bit box. Any ideas on where to go?

And the reason for FF was that some media was not playing with iceweasel as it was perhaps too old? I didn't think 3.06 was that old myself, but when I installed FF, the sites that weren't playing fired right up.

Debian :: No Internet Connection / Network

Sep 26, 2010

I am working on a cross-platform application for Linux ,Apple and Windows, so I have a full tower system with four SATA hard drives that be selected with a switch, so that I can change drives and operating systems at will. -sort of makes me a jack of linux systems, but master of none.It's important to mention this, because it shows the strangeness of the problem as it is isolated to Debian* systems.

So where does debian/ubuntu get it's information to establish a network connection?How do I rectify the problem? I can hardly blame the hardware (RTL8111B), because the problem is isolated to Debian systems.

Debian :: Can't Get Wired Internet Connection After Reboot

Oct 25, 2015

I have been using this fresh Debian 8.2 install for 3 days without any network problems.

What I did this morning :

- Booted in my windows partition and rebooted immediately just to remove the system from the sleep state
- Mounted a NTFS hard drive and copied some file to my .wine drive_c

Thats when I noticed that my connection was down.

I verified all the physical layer. My laptop has access to the internet tried to connect on an another router with eht0, changed the wire, nothing worked.

It seems like the interface can't get a dhcp ipv4 address even when I try to force is with dhclient, I get no offer when my laptop works just fine.

- Booted on my windows partition without changing any connection and my internet was working.
- Booted back on debian still not working...

Debian :: Updating The Kernel Without An Internet Connection?

May 19, 2011

I recently installed Debian "Squeeze" onto a Thinkpad T420, alongside Windows 7. During the installation Debian was unable to detect my NIC (Intel 82579LM), but otherwise the installation completed normally. I've installed the required e1000e drivers, and added "alias eth0 e1000e" to the modules file. Using lspci I can see that the computer detects the card, but still fails to load the drivers for it.

I'm at a bit of a loss, as this is my first time using Linux. After a bit of searching it looks like the 2.6.38 kernel resolves the issue with this card, so I guess that's my next step.Unfortunately all the installation instructions I've found assume an internet connection.Is there a simple way to update the kernel without a connection, or -even better- an install disc with 2.6.38 so I can start from scratch?

Debian Configuration :: No Internet Connection After Reboot

Feb 20, 2016

I rebooted my vServer (Debian 8) and it doesn't came back up. Well, I used the rescue console on my server and the server seems to be running fine, except the network was broken. So I tried 'ifconfig' but nothing came up. So I tried to enable my interface with 'ifconfig venet0 up', and now it appears in my ifconfig list

Code: Select allroot@i67svof:/var/www# ifconfig
venet0    Link encap:UNSPEC  HWaddr 00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00
          UP BROADCAST POINTOPOINT RUNNING NOARP  MTU:1500  Metric:1
          RX packets:557 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
          RX bytes:36463 (35.6 KiB)  TX bytes:0 (0.0 B)

My HWaddr doesn't look that well :) 'ip addr' prints this result:

Code: Select allroot@i67svof:/var/www# ip addr
1: lo: <LOOPBACK> mtu 65536 qdisc noop state DOWN
    link/loopback 00:00:00:00:00:00 brd 00:00:00:00:00:00
2: venet0: <BROADCAST,POINTOPOINT,NOARP,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc noqueue state UNKNOWN

These are the last lines in /var/log/syslog:

Code: Select allroot@i67svof:/var/www# tail /var/log/syslog
Feb 20 11:34:16 i67svof systemd[1]: Stopping memcached daemon...

Feb 20 11:34:16 i67svof systemd[1]: Stopping Login Prompts.

[Code] .....

And finally my network config in /etc/network/interfaces

Code: Select all# Auto generated lo interface

All is running ok in IPV4.Maybe, the solution is a NAT 6to4. We know this is the future, no more public IPV4.

Debian Configuration :: Unable To Connect To Internet Connection

I am using Empathy IM client to access to gadu gadu and to message with my friends. The strange thing that is happening is that I keep on being connected and then disconnected and then connected again even if I am continuously connected to my internet connection (no problem when surfing or using skype for example)It also seems to come only from me because when my girlfriend is using the same gadu gadu on her windows laptop simultaneously, she doesn´t get disconnected (whether when she is at home and using the same connection as I am or when she is outside, meaning that it doesn´t seem to come from the whole gadu gadu network)maybe it has something to do with the ports that gadu gadu is using but it is strange that sometimes it is working for a period of time and then not and then again.
