Debian Configuration :: Openvpn And Internet Connection Lost
Oct 29, 2010
When I make a vpn connection to an openvpn server, I loose the internet connection.
The VPN works all right.
Server config (extract)
Client config
Client route without the VPN connection
client route with VPN connected (internet lost)
Is there anything I can do to the push rule of the servers's config file?

I have succesflly installed OpenVPN server and clients(followed tuts). Everything is great, however when I have openvpn connection established on the clients I loose the basic internet connection in the browser, but my clients can see the vpn server(even I can ssh to the server via the openvpn client ip). I am guessing that all the traffic is routed through the server. I am just not knowledgable enough with routing , iptables and internet sharing. I am using tun based setup on OpenVPN. I am just not even sure if this is a server or a client issue, sorry for ignorance and illeteracy.

1 linksys router: gets the net from PPPOE and give the network DHCP. The router IP is 192.168.1.1. 1 windows laptop that work wireless and wired. 1 debian desktop that work wired and not working wireless. THe problem with the debian desktop is like this: I have a TP-Link TL-WN321G installed and found by lsusb command. I make a wireless connection WPA Personal (just like the router settings) it says i am connected to the wl network but no internet connection. the route command give me this:
[code]....
I tryed with wicd who said that the connection is WEP (and it's not, it is setup to WPA on the router and the network-manager conncetion) and when i try to connect i get bad password. I tryed with network-manager uninstalled and no chance.

I rebooted my vServer (Debian 8) and it doesn't came back up. Well, I used the rescue console on my server and the server seems to be running fine, except the network was broken. So I tried 'ifconfig' but nothing came up. So I tried to enable my interface with 'ifconfig venet0 up', and now it appears in my ifconfig list
Code: Select allroot@i67svof:/var/www# ifconfig
venet0Â Â Link encap:UNSPECÂ HWaddr 00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00Â

My HWaddr doesn't look that well :) 'ip addr' prints this result:

In one of my customers, the new internet connection have no public IPV4(using GCNAT), only public IPV6.
And there are various services that require external access, like, vpn (openvpn), a java/web system, ssh, rdp(windows).
fileServer(by vpn).
All is running ok in IPV4.Maybe, the solution is a NAT 6to4. We know this is the future, no more public IPV4.

I am using Empathy IM client to access to gadu gadu and to message with my friends. The strange thing that is happening is that I keep on being connected and then disconnected and then connected again even if I am continuously connected to my internet connection (no problem when surfing or using skype for example)It also seems to come only from me because when my girlfriend is using the same gadu gadu on her windows laptop simultaneously, she doesn´t get disconnected (whether when she is at home and using the same connection as I am or when she is outside, meaning that it doesn´t seem to come from the whole gadu gadu network)maybe it has something to do with the ports that gadu gadu is using but it is strange that sometimes it is working for a period of time and then not and then again.

I have just installed Debian Squeeze on my spare computer (dual booted with Ubuntu 11.04) and I cannot connect to the internet using Squeeze. Due to my ISP, I have to manually connect this computer and on Ubuntu copying and pasting a text file such as this into the terminal works with no problems. What do I need to do to manually configure my Squeeze internet connection?

I replaced my motherboard and processor but am keeping my old hard drive without reformatting it. Things work well except that I cannot connect to the internet. I am thinking that I just need to reconfigure the connection to see the new network hardware. I tried /etc/init.d/networking restart but that doesn't do anything. What am I missing? By the way it is a wired connection - not wireless.

I'm going to start using Debian as my desktop system rather than Ubuntu since I'm not really liking all the crazy eye candy and just wanted a fast and simple system. My main problem is networking, I guess I'll start off with my system specs and other information for problem solving.
My specs are:
- Intel Core i7 2600K CPU
- Gigabyte Z68X-UD3P-B3 Motherboard
- 8GB DDR3 1600Mhz RAM
I have a Realtek RTL8111/8168B Ethernet Adapter builtin to my motherboad which I am using, I could only get a basic connection, by basic I mean that it allowed me to connect to my local area network but not the internet. I then modified /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf to change to managed=true this allowed me to use the internet, but the problem is, that it is a very unstable connection, the speed is very slow and it drops a lot! I have to carry on running /etc/init.d/network-manager restart twice to get my connection back, which lasts for about a minute.

I have no idea how I managed this, but I am able to connect to the internet but NetworkManager doesn't show any connection. This means that until I kill it, I cannot log in with Pidgin, because it is waiting for a connection.
Do I disable NetworkManager completely or do I try to make it recognize that I am connected to the Internet? If the latter, then how should I go about? (Please let me know which files I need to show you, because I know I've messed around with a couple).

I had some trouble with the netinst CD and I had to install lenny with the 6DVDs instead. My internet connection only works after I edit the interfaces and resolv.conf files manually. So my question is: can I do that from the netinst CD before it actually needs the connection to install everything? (otherwise I'll just need to use the DVDs.

I played with the Network Settings section in YaST, because I wanted to use the wireless network card I installed into the PCI port. OpenSUSE recognised the type of card and its MAC number, and told me that I needed to install a firmware (fwcutter something). I tried some changes on the cable internet connection (like activate on plugged) while I tried to change the wireless connection (like activate on boot).
What I have now is that my cable internet connection is not working at all (it was working just 3 days ago), my wireless internet connection is, as always, not working either. I managed to work the wireless card on Windows XP by finding its drivers.
Since the problem is with my office computer, I cannot answer the exact brand names of the ethernet card and wireless card. Shall I reinstall OpenSUSE 11.3 from the DVD I have?
Second problem: OpenSUSE does not recognise my external harddisk, it gives an error about mounting the device.

Three months ago my daughter went off to college with a new computer. I zapped her old system and successfully installed Ubuntu 9.04 from a CD. Everything worked fine including all the peripherals and the wireless internet connection. I was able to download and update applications without a hitch. Great system and so much cleaner and quicker than Win XP on the old machine. Then the system was shut down and lay idle for three months. When I fired it up a couple of days ago, all seemed normal except I could no longer access the internet even though the wireless network icon showed four or five bars. I first discovered the problem when I tried to update though Update Manager and noticed that 22 identified files could not be fetched. Neither Firefox, Skype nor Goodgle Earth can connect.
The router is a Linksys WRT54G router that connects to the computer through a Linksys WUSB54G USB network adapter. The router serves three other non-Linux computers without a problem, including one using the same model network adapter.I don't have much experience with Ubuntu, but this is some of the information I have been able to generate.
I tried a few of the recommendations found in other sites, but nothing seems to do the job. I am perplexed because everything was great until I shut down the system for three months and then started it up again. I appreciate any assistance and would be happy to provide additional information as requested.

I am running ubuntu 9.1 on a Dell Dimension 2400. After installing ubuntu on the pc, it was automatically recognizing my router and connecting to the internet fine via ethernet. Then, my roommate unplugged the router and it won't recognize it. I can't access my router settings, and ubuntu is recognizing it as "inactive" but every other computer in the apartment runs fine. My PC uses a broadcom ethernet controller, and my router is a Linksys wireless N.

I was running 8.04 and my internet (Comcast) comes via a Motorola SB5100 cable modem then into a Netgear router then into my Dell. When I upgraded to 10.04 yesterday, I lost the wired connection. The wireless connection still works fine, but I have not been able to get a wired connection. Also, most online solutions reference the Network Manager, which is nowhere to be found.
Anyone have any solutions? I would be willing to revert to 8.04 if needed, as that worked fine, and obviously I quite regret the upgrade!

We have an Asterisk machine that we suspect periodically loses internet connectivity, causing all calls to drop. First, would this sort of thing be logged anywhere out of the box? I haven't noticed anything in /var/log, but that doesn't mean it's not there. If this is not typically logged, how I might go about logging it? I'm currently running a bash script from cron every 5 or 10 minutes which pings Google and writes success or failure messages to a log file. This works fine for extended outages, but if the internet connection drops and comes back between cron runs, it won't be caught.

I'm running OpenVPN service on both debian server and client. When start connection between client and server, I expect all the computer traffic (except ARP and DHCP requests) go through created tunnel. However, when I capture packets on wlan0 on client (the only connection going outside host) using Wireshark, I can see DNS requests visible and sometimes incoming TCP traffic as well, but most of the traffic is going through tunnel as expected. I provide both configurations of client and server and client routing table for inspection. I changed server address to avoid server exploitation in the case of some big configuration mistake.
Commands to run OpenVPN services are:
Code: Select allFor client: sudo openvpn --config /etc/openvpn/client.conf &
For server: sudo openvpn --config /etc/openvpn/server.conf &
**Client routing table when VPN is OFF**
Code: Select allKernel IP routing table
Destination   Gateway     Genmask     Flags Metric Ref  Use Iface
default     192.168.1.1   0.0.0.0     UG  1024  0    0 wlan0
192.168.1.0Â Â Â *Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â 255.255.255.0Â Â UÂ Â Â 0Â Â Â 0Â Â Â Â 0 wlan0
[code]...
I searched through many forums and documentation and I found, that for all the traffic going via VPN is command: *push "redirect-gateway def1"* neccessary, however, I have leaks despite this command being in place. I already spent over 2 days with this and tried to configure it in many ways, now I have no clue what I'm missing.

After running a large update and rebooting a few weeks ago, I found that my internet connection had stopped working. My internal network still worked fine though, so it I know it's not the card itself or its configuration. After a bit of trial and error I discovered that simply running dhclient brings the connection up again, so it appears that something is interfering with the initial dhcp update to my ISP (or something like that; I'm no expert in this area. ) My usual policy in cases like this is to wait through two or three updates in the hopes that it's just a temporary problem, but it's been a while now and subsequent updates haven't fixed it.
I've tried looking around, but I can't come up with search criteria specific enough to narrow it down to my specific situation. I'm not even sure where to begin looking to diagnose the problem, nor do I know which package update(s) could've affected it. I'm not sure what might be useful, but here's the relevant entry in /etc/network/interfaces. I have it configured with a static internal address, with my router as the gateway.
Code:
# The primary network interface
mapping eth0
script grep
map eth0

I installed Fedora today, and I automatically had internet connection, I never had do configure anything myself. Then, I was playing around with VPN for a good while (trying to set up the VPN connection to my University), and now, I suddenly lost my connection to the internet!
But only Fedora can't connect anymore, the Windows PC has connection as well as my Mac OS X (I dualboot Linux on my MacBook). The Ethernet connection works as well, when I unplug the cable, Fedora gives me a message, but I just don't get into the internet!
Does anyone have an ides what I have to do? I don't know anything about network connections and I'm new to Linux...
I already restarted the Computer, but that didn't work, and Google didn't really held either.

As I view it, Ubuntu has a great security risk in that it still allows internet access when the VPN connection has been lost, for whatever reason. As it is now, when the VPN connection fails you get bumped back to using your regular IP, and whatever you are doing becomes transparent to anyone watching. This is simply unacceptable for an allegedly secure platform. Does anyone know of a way to fix this with a script/program, or is there a distribution/OS that allows this? Windows re-dials the vpn automatically, but still allows internet access in the mean time.

I do have a problem with my internet connection at home, I've a Huawei router and ubuntu 10. When I connect to the internet whether wireless or wired I become able to surf the internet for less than 10 min then it cuts off! and to be able to surf it again I need to restart the whole system!
I used this command to restart the networking but in vain
Code:
sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart
On windows I do not face this problem with the same internet connection. I do not face it either when I'm using my campus wireless connections using ubuntu/windows!, so the problem is related to my home connection+ my OS.
