Debian :: Setting Up Internet Connection On Dual Boot System

I am new to Linux and Debian. I have Compaq Presario R3000 laptop, which is 5 years old now. I have RealTek RTL8139 family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC. Currently I have a broadband connection at home. I have dual boot Windows XP Professional and Debian (which I installed a week ago through CD). I have done some preliminary tests for the network and I am posting the screenshots for the tests (e.g. lspci, ifconfig, etc.). I also did two more commands. For 'cat /etc/network/ifstate' the output was 'No such file or directory'. Same output was for the command 'cat /etc/network/options'.

I currently have an old powermac 7220/200 with all ehe origanl stuff except for the hard drive which is now a slightly larger one. I was wondering if it was possible to set up a ubuntu installation on it using a 20g hard drive (I have got one of these going on a 486 running win98, just) and be able to run mac os as a dual boot system, possibly with 9.1 and the origanal mac os that come with it? Unfortunantly I cannot connect this computer to any internet even if I had a card that was compatible with mac os.

This is the third time I try unsuccessfully to install Debian as a second OS on a hard drive. When it gets to the end of the installation process the installer asks whether I want to go ahead with the Grub Boot Loader, I choose yes. The end result is however that I can't boot that partition within the hard drive -- i.e., Debian. Can someone tell me what is going on? Should I not use the Grub Boot Loader when I have more than one operating system on a machine? Should I not install Grub on the Master Boot Record (MBR)?

I've installed Debian squeeze using the net installer and while beginning the installation I loaded the 'ppp-udeb' module to connect to the internet for accessing the Debian mirrors during the installation. Now, whenever I boot into Debian, internet connection kicks in automatically. I would want to have control over when to start the internet connection. I don't want it to be triggered during my login.

I have just installed Linux Mint 8 Helena & it appears to be working well alongside my xp system. The problem I do have is setting up the much needed broadband connection. I have an adsl speedtouch330 usb modem, with tesco.net as my server, which works just fine on xp hence this mail. Am I missing something obvious, or have I got myself into depths much deeper & complex than I thought.

I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 . Need to get my wireless router working on my HP laptop. Have been using a Linksys WRT54G Router with windows and it is working properly. Tried setting up in NetworkManager but it does not work.
When looking at things in the Ubuntu terminal it says the network is DISABLED.

The problem isn't with thew new computer but with my computer running Ubuntu. The problem is that I'm having trouble getting the Internet to work. Before the router I just plug my PC straight into the modem but now with the router I can't get on the Internet. I can get a connection to the router but no Internet. I know the it is not the router because I use my PS3 and it worked fine. I spend like an hour just trying to get the connection but can't figure out the Internet problem. What I did to get the connection is copy the ip address, Mac, and etc. from the PS3. Then I made a new connection and put the data in the IPV4 settings and it got a connection but I'm not sure if I did that right or just got lucky

I have tested several Linux Distros over the last weeks, and with all of them my DSL connection have been working out of the box (for intance Mandriva, Ubuntu, Mint). But it does not work on Dreamlinux, neither on Live CD or now where Dreamlinux is installed on my harddisk.
According to the guidelines provided by my Internet provider I need to use TCP/IP and activate DHCP. And make sure that PPPoE is not activated.
I see nowhere I can do this in Dreamlinux. In the controle panel i can run Wicd. Then I can chose to de-activate Wicd - this gives me an option of entering Adress, Networking mask, Gatway and Nameserver - for static ip it says - and this is the opposit of DHCP, right??
SO - what to do? Should I get a debian package or something? (Dreamlinux is using debian packages, as far as I could see)

I have successfully set up a cable internet connection in Ubuntu (created a new DSL connection by typing login and password and connected the cable - it worked). But I have no idea how I can set up a wireless internet connection.I have a wireless access point TL-WA501G, laptop and a cable internet connection with fixed IP address.My laptop can see the wireless access point. i am attempting to setup a macbook run by os x 10.5 for dual boot with ubuntu 9.10.
however, when get the part where usually a gui interface which allows one to specify the size of the new ubuntu partition appears i only get the options for using the entire disk, the largest free space or manual partition.
how can i set this machine up for dual boot?

From what I have read around the net I should be able to set up my hard drive so that I have one small partition for Windows 7, one small partition for Ubuntu 10.04 and the remainder can be a third partition which contains all my files (accesible from both OS).irst question, is this possible?I tried to install Windows 7 first (I hear installing Ubuntu first creates havoc), then i tried to use the partition editor that comes with windows 7 and it wont let me shrink the partition any smaller than 700GB even though it is 98% free ( I have tried defragging thatdrive).Now Im wondering, can I use GParted to format my disk, then set up all the partition, and then install the OS's

I am having some trouble setting up a dual boot with Win XP and Slackware 13.1. Lilo lists both Linux and Windows, but when I select Windows, all I get is a black screen. I have two hard drives, sda1 and sdb1. I first installed Windows on sdb1 (it is a smaller, older drive). I then installed Slackware on sda1 and selected to install Lilo on the MBR. I'm guessing that by doing this, I wrote over the Windows information that was already there. Could this be my problem? I feel like this should be an easy fix, but I just don't know where to start in order to fix it. If it helps, here is the end of my lilo.conf file.

I would like to set up my computer to dual boot with two different linux distributions, Ubuntu 10.04 32-bit and Slackware 13.1 64-bit. I'm not 100% sure how to go about this exactly. Ideally I would like for both distributions to share the /home directory, that way I can switch between distros and keep all my personal data neat and tidy without having to access it across partitions. This has the added benefit of keeping my filesystem usage in check. However I'm not sure if I'll have to go through a lot of permission headaches with this scheme. I would be using the same username on both distros. At the moment I'm thinking of having a common /boot directory, two different / directories (one for each distro) and a common /home but I don't know if this is feasible. I

So I wanted to dual boot Ubuntu with Windows 7, but have no idea how to partition out Ubuntu. At the moment, I'm working with a 300GB harddrive that will solely hold installed applications and stuff like that. Any shared/storage data will be put on separate harddrives altogether.
I plan on using a 40-50GB partition for Windows 7 alone (no installed applications and stuff). And here come the questions about Ubuntu partitioning. From what I read, do I only need three separate partitions? (/, /home, /swap) Even then I'm not 100% sure what each of these partitions represent. But my research says... / = equivalent to my Windows 7 partition, /home = the partition where installed applications go and other non-essential Ubuntu stuff, /swap = virtual memory
With all that said, to comfortably run Ubuntu can I have my partitions be these sizes?
/ = 10GB
/home = 20-30GB
/swap = 2GB (Do I even need this if I have 2GB of ram?)
Windows 7 = 40-50GB
W7 Apps = remaining space
I don't know what exactly I want to do with Ubuntu, but is a /home of 20-30GB adequate to install lot's and lot's of apps?

I'd like to dual-boot it with Windows 7, but I'm not sure exactly how I should set things up. Searching has helped but I would really appreciate advice specific to my scenario. 1 linksys router: gets the net from PPPOE and give the network DHCP. The router IP is 192.168.1.1. 1 windows laptop that work wireless and wired. 1 debian desktop that work wired and not working wireless. THe problem with the debian desktop is like this: I have a TP-Link TL-WN321G installed and found by lsusb command. I make a wireless connection WPA Personal (just like the router settings) it says i am connected to the wl network but no internet connection. the route command give me this:

I tryed with wicd who said that the connection is WEP (and it's not, it is setup to WPA on the router and the network-manager conncetion) and when i try to connect i get bad password. I tryed with network-manager uninstalled and no chance.

I have been trying out different Linux distros to dual boot with Windows Vista. First I tried Ubuntu and it worked fine. Then I tried Fedora 15 and it worked fine as well. Then I went back to Ubuntu but now I have decided to stick with Fedora. The first time I installed Fedora it gave me options for choosing default OS and other things, now I can't remember how I did that and can't figure out how to do that agian. How do I do that agian? I want it to automatically boot into Windows Vista. I am installing Fedora on a seperate hard drive.

I have Windows 7 on my laptop and am attempting to install Ubuntu 11.04 from CD.I boot from the disk drive, follow the prompts and eventually get to the screen where I can set how much space I want to give to the Ubuntu partition vs the Windows partition. My hard disk is 250GB, so I reduce the Windows one to 100GB (currently has 80GB of files on it) and set the Ubuntu one to 130GB (the other 20GB is split between the two hidden Windows 7 partitions).
I then click to continue and the progress bar for the install starts up but doesn't move, it just sits at 0%. I realised that the dialogue box underneath the progress bar can still be expanded and asks me to test using -n and -s, but when I type either of these into the box and hit return, nothing happens. I have checked my download of the .iso I used using WinMD5Sum and the hash matches up. I have already tried installing from USB but this threw an error, hence using CD. My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 1546 running Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit Processor: AMD Turion X2 Dual-Core Mobile RM-75 2.20GHz

i'm new in linux and i have a problem with my hdmi lcd under linux. To be more precise , my graphic card is an Nvidia GTX 295 with hdmi output to a Dell 2408W LCD screen and the problem is that linux can't see the hdmi connection, working just with DVI or VGA. I also have Windows 7 in dual boot with linux and in windows it works just fine. To mention that i tried several linux distributions: Ubuntu, Ubuntu ultimate 2.7 and Sabayon 5.4.

I did a bit of searching, but I guess I'm not sure of the terminology associated with what I'm trying to do.
I'm currently connected via ethernet port (NOT wireless) to my DSL modem.
Every so often my connection gets 'saturated', typically after or during a lot of bittorrent activity that maxes out my bandwith, and my speeds drop markedly, even if the bandwith isn't currently being maxed out. I'm not sure whether it's my ISP throttling my connection or something else, but as a work around, I typically just disconnect my modem from the outlet and then replug to restore normal speeds.
Is there a way to 'restart' my modem from the command line in a similar way without having to physically turn off my modem to get the desired effect?

I have a jpeg file on my Windows system that won't delete. However, when I try to boot into safe mode to delete it, I can not get into the menu to select "Safe Mode". F8 just boots me right into Ubuntu.I have Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.10 on an Acer Aspire 5520.

I've installed Ubuntu on my new desktop alongside Windows 7 (each OS is on a separate drive), I seem to have run into a small problem. Let me start with what I did:
- Unplugged 1TB drive from the PSU, BIOS was not seeing my formatted (and thus empty) 500GB drive and I couldn't put it into the boot order at all with the 1TB turned on.
- Loaded up the boot CD and was able to install Ubuntu 10.1 on my 500GB drive.
- Did a bit of configuring, shut my PC off and plugged my 1TB (with Windows 7) drive back in. I tried to see if I could now see my Ubuntu drive in BIOS but nothing is there - just the Windows drive is in the list of available drives to boot from (along with DVD-ROM and USB).
This is where I've run into my problem. What I want is to have a nice GRUB boot menu at the start like any other dual-boot system but just have the two operating systems on separate drives altogether.I did it this way because I was having issues with the advanced partition menu on the boot CD so just went ahead and followed the KISS method by unplugging the Windows drive.
I was told by a friend that if I put my Ubuntu drive into the first position in my boot order and the Windows drive in the second, then I could boot into Ubuntu and run a GRUB update command (he told me to google it) and that would create the necessary GRUB that had the entries for Windows 7 and Ubuntu.Both operating systems are 64-bit, I imagine that might make a difference in whatever help you guys can offer me. I love the hell out of both OS's and want to be able to use them interchangeably.

The problem is this: I have a 320gb HDD splitted in 4 partitions. When I first installed Windows XP I formatted the HDD in 3 (Windows system partition, Media partition and another one I left for Linux). However Linux requires another partition for swap. Everything was just fine. One day Windows stopped working and I tried re-installing it. After the system was ready to start, Windows failed to boot with "NTLDR is missing" message. I tried to recover the Master boot record, even replaced NTLDR manually - nothing worked. I read that in order a HDD to be partitioned in more than 3 parts the so called "extended" partitions must be created. I think this may cause the problem but I don't want to wipe out everything (I have more than 100 GB of books most of which are not available anymore in the same locations I have downloaded them)
