i wonder how i can update one single thing on my debian machine? without apt-get upgrade. lets say i just want to update my awstats install but not my php install, or my kernel version but not someting else, how can i do this ?
View 12 RepliesYesterday I had a huge amount of updates, including things like the Kernel, Mesa, and video driver (xf86-video-ati). Now my monitors are all messed up! When I booted, I found that the characters are much smaller and higher resolution in command line mode.
Then when I started X, my two monitors are swapped! The taskbar is on the right, secondary monitor, and I move the mouse off the right edge of the right monitor into the left edge of the left monitor.
Just updated, downloads and install complete. I closed laptop. Fan kept running. I rebooted. Black screen. Rebooted again. Screen resolution messed up (800x600 or whatever). Changed resolution in System/Prefs. Better, but the look is not the same as before update. The Gnome fonts and icons are too small, but the resolution is same as before update! My machine has been acting buggy lately...colored text in IceWeasel browser search field, where normally black. I have Firestarter running. How to tell if machine is hacked? I just logged out/in and all normal now. I still think the machine is acting weird.

I can login using the ip though. Also, it seems I can still access the debian box via samba/windows explorer using the host name.

I went on the fastest thing I could to make sure it worked which was omegle... the video worked and that meant flash 10 was installed now. But whenever I go onto something that requires flash like a video or game then it doesn't work.

Today, the aptitude update---aptitude upgrade gave me a new kernel (2.6.39). However, if I boot with that kernel, I get a warning (do not know if that is the way I should call this) telling me that the machine failed to get the i915 symbols so turbo graphics will be disabled.I have not done any serious test, but at first sight I do not notice any difference performance-wise with respect to the previous kernel. what am I supposed to do to fix this?

I know the thing is there and Linux is able to identify it. However, using the drivers included with the device (rtl8192su_linux_2.6.0002.0707.2009) and later other drivers (rtl8712_8188_8191_8192SU_usb_linux_v2.6.6.0.20101111) and the firmware realtek package as well, Modprobe shows nothing. I am still running lenny 2.6 on a dell latitude d505 (circa 2006) running the x86 32-bit debian distro. The USB device is produced by Sabrent and contains the realtek 8191s IEEE 802.11N chipset. After all effort so far, my guess is that the 8192 drivers are not compatible with the 8191 chipset, but then why were they included with the device and why do the 8191 drivers still reference 8192?
I have an issue with the manner in which Network Manager is configuring the network and short of ditching Network Manager I can see no solution.The issue : Getting a machine to update its machine name in the DNS serverSounds simple doesn't it I operate a FreeBSD based firewall / DHCP / DNS server, using a default Network Manager DHCP configuration the Fedora clients do not register their names with the DNS server when they obtain an address.
I have traced the communications with Wireshark and the Fedora clients are NOT supplying the PC's hostname as part of the exchange so this is NOT a DNS server configuration issue. If I uncheck the option 'Automatically obtain DNS information from provider' under the DHCP settings the Fedora clients DO register the hostname that is put into the Hostname (optional) databox. They do NOT however store the DNS server IP address or any other records defined by the DNS server.
Is there some hidden settings or is this a bug because it isn't acceptable 'DHCP' behaviour if it isn't possible to automatically set DNS server IP addresses and at the same time register the hostname during the DHCP negotiation. Before it is said I know I can use a fixed DNS IP address but am not prepared to long term, I am also not prepared to define the Fedora clients with a 'static' IP. I am similarly not interested in playing around with scripts or any other such 'frigs' to achieve what should be a standard activity - registering a host with DNS during the DHCP negotiation.

All i was trying to provide IP to eth0 and eth1 through dhcp.is it possible to provide two IP address to eth0 and eth1 both through DHCP.
Before you answer I am just curious about this. I certainly would never do this nor recommend it. However because I have never tried this I was curious if it actually would happen.At the end of Lenny, would it pop up in the update-manager-gnome that a new release "Squeeze" is available? I am just curious.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI am running Ubuntu 9.10 x64 on a relatively old laptop and I find Grub is taking about 20 seconds to initially load before booting the system. The laptop only has a single 120GB hard drive, and I chose the "use entire disk" option when installing, so I do not have any fancy partitioning scheme.When the system boots I get the "LOADING GRUB" text displayed and then shortly after it just shows the flashing cursor with no text, and stays there for about 20 seconds. After that it finally starts loading the system.All the searching I have done only turned up solutions relevant to people with multiple hard drives. This was not an issue on Grub 1.

The aim is not to add all 50K IPv6 addresses one by one on the loopback/ETH device which will probably mess up the ip table on the system. In IPv4, I am able to achieve that by specifying the IP address subnet on loopback device (e.g: "ip addr add 10.1.0.0/16 dev lo"). The same command does not seem to work the same way for IPv6. It only adds a single IPv6 address on loopback device and it automatically adds an "unreachable route" entry on the ipv6 route table for that IPv6 network prefix.
The reason I need this is because I am working on an application which tries to simulate 50K IPv6 addresses on a single Linux box. The kernel version I am currently using is RHEL 2.6.9.55.
Can I have 3 drives in one physical server and treat each drive like a server?
If so, would I install the operating system on each drive, and give each drive an IP address?

I have a network of 100 machines, all with ubuntu Linux. Is there a limit to the number of machines that can connect to one single machine (at the same time)? For example, can I have 99 of my machines maintain continuous ssh connection to the 100th machine? Can I have every one of my machines (every one of the 100) maintain a continuous ssh connection to all other 99 machines? How much memory does each such a connection take?

Both these audio devices work fine simultaneously on my Windows 7, but in Ubuntu, only my headphones work, speakers don't work at all. I tried changing some settings in SOUND PREFERENCES as well as ALSA SOUND MIXER, but not luck so far.

View 3 Replies View RelatedLast nigth I upgrade my system to squeeze and it whent well except for grub-pc and udev. If i try to upgrade now udev will not install do to problems with the kernel version and grub-pc can't seem to find the boot image.

My internet connectivity is not that fast. Since I am using Squeeze, there will be very frequent updates.
My problem is that I am not able to download all the update in one go and to complete the upgrade. As the number of files to be downloaded and upgraded increases, I can't seem to be able to reach the end point to complete any update.
Can aptitude upgrade just the files that have been downloaded so far, and resume downloading the rest in the next attempt? MS Windows will update the OS with whatever patches downloaded without waiting for the rest if I prematurely shutdown the pc.
I have this intra net server project going on and now I moved to 10.04 however there are still some things that I would like to see clarification and instructions on. I am interested to set up multiple parallel websites for my apache server, however I am not sure how to do this exactly. Now I have solid address rivera.wippies.net and port 80 redirecting to my server. What I would like to get done is that I get multiple independent of each other websites for my server I was thinking of making websites like this
/var/www/site1 (which would be as rivera.wippies.net)
/var/www/site2 (which would be as rivera.wippies.net/othersite)
/var/www/site3 (which would be rivera.wippies.net/secondothersite)
etc, so that I have multiple "individual" websties for my server. Requirements would be that each of these websites could have SSL encryption as needed available too, since some of the website could have confidential information.

If I have only 1 physical WLAN interface, is there some hackery that can be done so that it can be a client of an existing access point and at the same time also act as an access point for other clients? I have an existing 802.11g ADSL router, and I'm going to be building an HTPC which will have 802.11n. My laptop also has 802.11n, but at the moment it only connects at 54Mbps because thats what the AP supports. I'd like to be able to have the HTPC be a client of my ADSL router, but have my laptop be a client of the HTPC, so copying files to it will be faster.
