Jul 11, 2010I am trying to upgrade an amd64 lenny system to squeeze.I've got a 2.6.32 kernel running, done aptitude update and aptitude install aptitude.When I try "aptitude safe-upgrade", it sits forever resolving dependencies.it seems to search with the resolver counting up more and more open/conflict/ whatever.I stopped it once it got over 100,000)Is it possible to get aptitude to do a safe-upgrade, perhaps using a command line option?

Debian :: Hash Sum Mismatch Error When Running Aptitude
Jul 9, 2015Im trying to update the system packages list by doing "aptitude update", but I got a error like this:
W: Failed to fetch http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualb ... 4/Packages: Hash Sum mismatch
E: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
E: Couldn't rebuild package cache
After searching the Web, I saw that many foruns seems to suggest to erase the reference list of packages using the command " rm -rf /var/lib/apt/lists/" and then run "aptitude update" again. I did that but the error still pops up.

Dec 29, 2010I am running squeeze. I ran aptitude update and then safe-upgrade. The system detects 104 conflicts and then installs nothing, with no other messages. What can the problem be?

I've got a strange problem with my last "aptitude safe-upgrade". It had removed all my kde 4.3 and packages I have installed, I don't know why!
This is what aptitude removed :
$ dpkg -l | grep ^rc |awk '{print $2}' | xargs echo .....
I reinstalled kde-full (kde 4) but now with an aptitude safe-upgrade or dist-upgrade. It wants to remove my debian-multimedia keyrings and my wine-unstable and others each time.
# aptitude -s safe-upgrade

Jul 4, 2010I am new to Debian (just used Gentoo until now), I run a little server for our company and clients. Unfortunately our hosting company switched us from a Gentoo system to a Debian Lenny box with Confixx and stopped maintaining it. So I will need to do the house keeping, which worries me a bit. Today I started and ran: aptitude update && aptitude safe-upgrade and got a huge list with packages to upgrade. Unfortunately, I am not confident, if I will break something upgrading (Confixx, apache) as I get the following warning message:
WARNING: untrusted versions of the following packages will be installed!
Untrusted packages could compromise your system's security.
You should only proceed with the installation if you are certain that this is what you want to do.

But, running aptitude update/upgrade again afterwards, aptitude ignores these supposedly available updates to the system. How can I clear up this situation?. Feb 18, 2011I'm developing with puppet, and I need to do an aptitude update from a specific file, here is my configuration: The file sources.list in /etc/apt/ is deleted. I've created 3 files in /etc/apt/sources.list.d each one with their repos:

All the repos are updated/refreshed , and I only want to refresh/update the specific repos insie of the file 01-debian_security_updates.list. On the other hand if I put some repos in the sources.list and delete the 3 files and I create an external file for example in /tmp/temprepo and I do the command aptitude update -o dir::etc::sourcelist=/tmp/temprepo it works fine.give some workaround to update and then upgrade packages from the files specified in my config.
Debian :: New Stable Update - Command Aptitude Not Found
Feb 7, 2011Well it didn't go smoothly for me. After downloading over 1,6Gb (!) of that new Debian version and restarting I was 'greeted' by a dreaded CLI instead of gnome. To make matters worse I got "command aptitude not found".
'apt-get' still worked.
Anyway, if you're gonna update check dependencies first. It seems I lost gnome due to gstreamer0.10-gnomevfs. So first uninstall that package if you got it.

Like I regularly do, and I see these two packages need to be upgraded:

Since these packages seem kinda security-sensitive I would like to know exactly why I would need to upgrade them. I checked Debian's security list but couldn't find anything relevant, and the links to the changelog for both packages are broken:
The requested URL /changelogs/pool/main/s/shadow/shadow_4.1.4.2+svn3283-2+squeeze1/changelog was not found on this server.
Where can I see what is changed in these packages so I can safely upgrade?
Debian :: Name Of Package That Prints Ncurses Style Dialogs During 'aptitude Safe-upgrade'
Mar 1, 2010I'm running Debian squeeze and my packages are all up to date. I usually do my updates by typing 'aptitude update' and 'aptitude safe-upgrade' at the command line as root.Sometimes when doing regular updates aptitude, or the package that's being updated, shows a ncurses-style dialog box on the screen, usually to have the user 'OK' a change, or to select which version of a configuration file to keep. Recently I've found these dialog boxes to be slightly messed up... in that the spot at the bottom where I would expect the 'OK' button to be is replaced by nonsensical characters.
There seems to be no problem with the way that the program functions, as I can press the tab key and then the return key, or just the return key alone, and the dialog goes away, seemingly doing it's job. But I would like to know what this program is. It's likely been updated recently, but looking through /var/log/aptitude and /var/log/aptitude.1.gz I cannot figure out which one it is. I'd like to file a bug report, or simply be able to follow the progress of someone else's bug. That's all.

Jun 22, 2011I do not know if this is really something I should worry about. I am running Debian testing on my laptop (HP Pavillon dv6). Today, the aptitude update---aptitude upgrade gave me a new kernel (2.6.39). However, if I boot with that kernel, I get a warning (do not know if that is the way I should call this) telling me that the machine failed to get the i915 symbols so turbo graphics will be disabled.I have not done any serious test, but at first sight I do not notice any difference performance-wise with respect to the previous kernel. what am I supposed to do to fix this?

Sep 1, 2010I'm currently experiencing a problem when trying to upgrade my system through aptitude (apt-get *). I can install programs, but whenever it tries do anything with the kernel I get this error:
