Aug 8, 2010Im fairly new with Linux (Puppy and Mint) and have only been working with Debian for 24 hours. I have come across the errors shown in the attached screen shots.

Ubuntu Installation :: Can Not Calculate Upgrade / 'report This Bug Agains Update-manager Package'?
Dec 6, 2010I keep getting this message while I try to run updates. The Update Manager says I have 35MB to install but it doesn't do it. Can anyone tell me what the problem is and how to maybe fix it? Also, how do I 'report this bug against the update-manager package'?

Sep 22, 2010If I install (say) Iceweasel from Lenny Backports, do I need to un-install the standard Lenny Iceweasel first, or will the new one overwrite/upgrade the old one? And- I understand pinning I think, but nobody explains what the * in the line:Package: * means. Does it mean all packages installed from the release specified in the line Pin: release a=lenny-backportsor do I need to specify each package in it's own entry (in /etc/apt/preferences)?

Mar 10, 2015At my current job it is my responsibility to update all the servers, as well as some of the workstations. Its an easy enough job, I just remote in to each "machine", and use Synaptic to update. Well, we have a package that was created here "key-build-tools-g6" and for some reason, after I update and go to close Synaptic, it says "There are still marked changes that have not yet been applied. They will be lost if you choose to quit 'Synaptic'". If I cancel and "Apply Updates" then look at the "Details" it says "key-build-tools-g6 (version 18) will be upgraded to version 18". I go ahead and update it again, it downloads, and installs, but then when I go to exit... Same thing.

May 26, 2010I am trying to upgrade a Debian 4 server to v5 with the instructions from document.However, I am having trouble with getting an installed package upgraded to the latest version for the current release (see error below). And I am afraid to upgrade the distribution if I can't get this package to upgrade. One thing I did notice in the error was, "Aborting downgrade from (at least) 5.1 to 5.0". The dpkg --get-selections command showed that both MySQL 5.0 and 5.1 were installed (I don't know how or why, as I was not the one to setup this server), but 5.0 was the one running. So I've since uninstalled v5.1 but that error still shows up when I try to do an apt-install upgrade. I don't know that this is what is causing the package upgrade to fail but I thought it worth mentioning.

Dec 27, 2010I was attempting to install CRYPT-SSLEAY for perl. at the end of the installation many packages were auto uninstalled including aptitude & perlmagick ( both i need ) I think the system is tell me I need to upgrade the kernel but all my sources.list seem to be bad.

Debian :: Update & Package Manager Freeze During Authentication
Sep 12, 2010I just installed Debian (Stable, 5.0.6) for the first time. I had some troubles related to the installation of network and nvidia drivers, but now the system seems to work pretty well. The only problem i'm having is that when I try to use tools like the graphic update or the graphic packet manager, or the graphic tool for adding/removing software, after I write the password they ask me, they freeze, but still seem keeping loading something, as the cursor usually keeps turning, and, on the lower bar of Gnome, something like "Granting rights..." appears (i've the italian version so i don't know if i'm translating well or not). Sometime they freeze before the request of authentication and then nothing happens, sometime they simply don't start. Also, sometime the update manager starts but freezes when i click on the button that checks for new updates.Maybe it could be useful for you to know that I installed the 2.6.32-bpo.5-amd64 kernel because my network had problems with the 2.6.26-2-amd64, could this be a problem? i also installed the last Nvidia drivers, and i think nothing more, just the system updates from the stable repositories.

Package Updater GUI is Failing with the message:
No updates are available
No network connection was detected.

I did updates almost daily on wheezy
Todays updates [via the Pkg Updater GUI] were over 300 meg.
After the updates and reboot
System was showing version 8.0 in the GUI desktop and using 'cat /etc/debian_version'
Then...
From terminal I did ...
apt-get update
apt-get dist-upgrade
The dist-upgrade was over 40 minute and ~ 500meg
Things seemed to go well.
I updated sources.list with apt-spy.
[In order to trouble-shoot: I subsequently commented-out the apt-spy sources and found some generic sources on internet]

I did/reviewed some settings in the Synaptic GUI I imported two v8 signing keys into Synaptic from [URL]

Debian :: Name Of Package That Prints Ncurses Style Dialogs During 'aptitude Safe-upgrade'
Mar 1, 2010I'm running Debian squeeze and my packages are all up to date. I usually do my updates by typing 'aptitude update' and 'aptitude safe-upgrade' at the command line as root.Sometimes when doing regular updates aptitude, or the package that's being updated, shows a ncurses-style dialog box on the screen, usually to have the user 'OK' a change, or to select which version of a configuration file to keep. Recently I've found these dialog boxes to be slightly messed up... in that the spot at the bottom where I would expect the 'OK' button to be is replaced by nonsensical characters.
There seems to be no problem with the way that the program functions, as I can press the tab key and then the return key, or just the return key alone, and the dialog goes away, seemingly doing it's job. But I would like to know what this program is. It's likely been updated recently, but looking through /var/log/aptitude and /var/log/aptitude.1.gz I cannot figure out which one it is. I'd like to file a bug report, or simply be able to follow the progress of someone else's bug. That's all.

May 2, 2011Before you answer I am just curious about this. I certainly would never do this nor recommend it. However because I have never tried this I was curious if it actually would happen.At the end of Lenny, would it pop up in the update-manager-gnome that a new release "Squeeze" is available? I am just curious.

May 18, 2010Last nigth I upgrade my system to squeeze and it whent well except for grub-pc and udev. If i try to upgrade now udev will not install do to problems with the kernel version and grub-pc can't seem to find the boot image.

Debian :: Unable To Download All The Update In One Go And To Complete The Upgrade?
Jul 16, 2010My internet connectivity is not that fast. Since I am using Squeeze, there will be very frequent updates.
My problem is that I am not able to download all the update in one go and to complete the upgrade. As the number of files to be downloaded and upgraded increases, I can't seem to be able to reach the end point to complete any update.
Can aptitude upgrade just the files that have been downloaded so far, and resume downloading the rest in the next attempt? MS Windows will update the OS with whatever patches downloaded without waiting for the rest if I prematurely shutdown the pc.

Mar 14, 2011having had problems with getting grub2 to work on dual HDD setup...despite the most excellent advice on the forum i took the plunge and installed 10.10 from update manager within 10.04..... bingo fixed grub and now have dual boot again. but the update manager and synaptic package don't work because of libedata-cal1.2-6 file that remains..following other advice on the forum Advice gratefully received, how can i force an unistall of this package

May 1, 2011Using Lubuntu 10.10. I uninstalled Apache Server (it was once installed). But the update manager is cites many new Apache updates that I need. But again Apache is not installed anymore. Synaptic says it's not installed. I have a checker for orphaned packages it says nothing about Apache. Why does the updater say this? Maybe there's a "residue" of Apache somewhere?
