Networking :: Support 50K IPv6 Addresses On A Single Machine?

Feb 2, 2010

Does anyone know if there is any way to configure 50K "virtual" IPv6 addresses on loopback device in Linux?
The aim is not to add all 50K IPv6 addresses one by one on the loopback/ETH device which will probably mess up the ip table on the system. In IPv4, I am able to achieve that by specifying the IP address subnet on loopback device (e.g: "ip addr add 10.1.0.0/16 dev lo"). The same command does not seem to work the same way for IPv6. It only adds a single IPv6 address on loopback device and it automatically adds an "unreachable route" entry on the ipv6 route table for that IPv6 network prefix.

The reason I need this is because I am working on an application which tries to simulate 50K IPv6 addresses on a single Linux box. The kernel version I am currently using is RHEL 2.6.9.55.

Networking :: Sending / Receiving Between Two Systems Using IPv6 Addresses

Mar 8, 2010

We have connected two systems with ethernet cables and have configured the two systems with ipv6 addresses. The IP of one system is 2001:0db8:0:f101::1 (let's say X::1) (This system runs OS Fedora 10) and the other is 2001:0db8:0:f101::2. (Let's say X::2) (This system runs OpenSuSE 10.3) We are able to ping from both systems to the other. We are able to ssh into the one with IP X::2 from the one with IP X::1, but not vice versa.

We have disabled iptables on both systems by using the following commands:
/etc/init.d/iptables save
/etc/init.d/iptables stop
on the fedora 10 system and
# iptables -X
# iptables -t nat -F
# iptables -t nat -X
# iptables -t mangle -F
# iptables -t mangle -X
# iptables -P INPUT ACCEPT
# iptables -P FORWARD ACCEPT
# iptables -P OUTPUT ACCEPT
on the openSuse system.

The error we get in trying to ssh from the openSuse system to the fedora system is:
ssh: connect to host 2001:0db8:0:f101::1 port 22: Connection refused

We're trying to write server and client code to send data from one system to the other using SOCK_DGRAM. The code works fine when we run both the client and server on the same system. However, we are not able to send data from one system to another when we use the IPv6 addresses to run the client and server programs.

The error we get is:
sendto(): Operation not permitted

The codes we are using for the server and client programs can be found here in beej's guide here : [URL]. We've only substituted the appropriate addresses in the right places... We've disabled the iptables...

Networking :: More Than One MAC Addresses On Single NIC?

Sep 25, 2010

My machine has ONE ethernet card and is on a LAN.IP address is assigned to hosts using DHCP.I can have more than one MAC address on LAN by running Virtual Machine and setting network to bridged. This way, my virtual machine simply acts like there is one more machine in the network.Running VMWare for this job is a a bit heavy on resources. Is there a way so that I can I can have 2 or more ip addresses with different MAC address on the same machine without having to run VirtualBox.

By googling, I think its related to bridging and tap. And, I am sure thatts NOT IP-ALIASING because in ip-aliasing both the ip addresses have the same MAC address.Basically, I want my system to have interfaces like:-eth0 - which was originally presentlo- thats always present :|newint0 - New interface with new MAC address and IP addresses which can access my LAN directly. Its like if I bind, let us suppose curl to this interface, its like a different connection

Ubuntu Networking :: Multiple External IP Addresses With Single Physical Ethernet Card And Virtualization

Feb 16, 2010

I recently installed Ubuntu Server 9.10 with the intent of using it as a platform for running a couple of Windows XP virtual machines along with Linux/Ubuntu.

I had no problems getting the server installed. Had no problems getting the network up and running so that I had access to both my internal network as well as external connectivity to the internet. Had no problems getting a VM installed and putting Windows XP inside of it. Had no problems setting up a bridge between the WinXP virtual machine and the physical ethernet card (eth0).

What Im having trouble with is figuring out how to bridge from multiple VMs AND Ubuntu natively through one physical ethernet card.

When I set up the bridge, it knocks out the static IP address of the ethernet card that was set up initially with Ubuntu when first installed before the VM was created and installed. Therefore, connectivity within Ubuntu natively is lost.

Similarly, am having trouble figuring out how the second VM (also going to be running WinXP) is going to get its connectivity since it doesnt seem to like me setting up 2 bridges to the same physical ethernet interface card.

I need all 3 machines to have static IP addresses and be visible/accessible from the external network for either web/mail/dns/etc servers on the Ubuntu side and for remote PC control functionality on the VM side.

I have tried setting up alias ethernet interfaces (eth0:1, eth0:2, eth0:3) with static addresses which work fine from native Ubuntu in presenting multiple IP addressees, but it seems that Im not permitted to bridge to these alias interfaces.

Fedora Networking :: FC15 IPV6 Wireless Router - No Longer Gets An IPv6 Address

Aug 31, 2011

I have been struggling to get FC15 to act as an IPv6 router for a while now, am sure I am missing something trivial.. The idea is that I have a ppp / adsl connection (this works fine), use the wireless card on my pc with hostapd and dhcpd to provide connections to other pcs (works fine), and radvd to delegate ipv6 addresses.

The issue seem to be that as soon as I turn on ipv6 forwarding (net.ipv6.conf.all.forwarding =1), the ppp connection no longer gets an IPv6 address. This means the router cannot ping any ipv6 address outside my network.

If I disable ipv6 routing, my router gets an IPv6 address on its ppp connection, and can ping things such as ipv6.google.com just fine, however (of course) no packets are forwarded from my network and radvd complains that forwarding is disabled.

Server :: Sendmail To Split Single Envelope Into Multiple To - Addresses

Aug 4, 2010

Our system uses email to send fairly time-sensitive status messages between programs running on various servers on a WAN. Each email message is sent to two addresses (different servers). The problem occurs when one of the destination mail servers is off the network. I think because it's trying to send one email to two addresses, sendmail attempts delivery to the first address, then to the second address (i.e., serially). When this happens, it hangs for two connect timeout (CONNECT_TO) periods trying to connect to the offline destination, then after the timeout, it then delivers to the other destination. I'm trying to figure out how to work around that connection delay so it doesn't delay delivery to the other destination.

I'm working with the network guys to enable the right ICMP messages that signal when a network is unavailable, but I would also like to try having sendmail split the emails into two envelopes, then use parallel, independent connections for delivery.

After days of reading through the docs (O'Rielly Sendmail book + sendmail docs) I think one way to do this is to use multiple mail queues, but I can't decipher exactly how to do that from the docs.

There might be other, more elegant ways to do the same thing, but again, trying to decipher the docs has my head swimming. (This is my first experience with sendmail.)

Slackware :: IPV6 Support Slows Opera And Firefox

Support for ipv6 keeps being put into the kernel and now into browsers.I blacklisted ipv6 in Slackware and that solved the slow internet response until I updated to the latest Opera and Firefox browsers. Both were horribly slow again. Firefox could be reconfigured to kill ipv6 by running about:config as a url and disabling ipv6.

The new Opera 11 is different. I can't find any config to disable ipv6. Does anyone have an idea?I reverted to Opera 10.11 in order to have zippy internet access again, and not "dialup modem" speeds.

Debian Configuration :: Support For Single Case Tty Broken In Agetty?

Feb 12, 2016

I'm restoring an old TI Silent 700 terminal [URL] ... and have connected it to an RPi running the debian based Jessie release using a serial converter. After learning more than I wanted to about serial settings and support I now have it interfaced and communicating bidirectionally but have one last hurdle - proper support for a single case (uppercase only) terminal in agetty.

With the -U flag on it seems like the the login name is detected as needing conversion because lowercase login names work - but lower case passwords do not and once I get a bash prompt all input comes in as upper case. So the -U agetty flag only seems to apply to login name and is then forgotten (not passed on to login process or bash?) and various settings in stty like iuclc, xcase, iexten don't seem to work.

I'd really like to get this terminal working with native support but I'll also take a kludge of some kind (I've tried a tr pipe for example).

Here is what I think is the relevant portion of my systemd generator:

Code: Select all[Service]
ExecStart=-/sbin/agetty -U 300 %I $TERM
Type=idle
Restart=always
UtmpIdentifier=%I
TTYPath=/dev/%I

Ubuntu / Apple :: Single Hard Drive Only Support Up To 4 Partitions?

Jan 9, 2010

I've recently bought the "new" Macbook from Apple. It obviously came with OSX preinstalled. And I'm obviously not satisfied with the way it works, I also need a FAT32 partition so I can share my files between all three OS's. Tricky business. And I thought later on I might try and create me a nice LFS system to learn about Linux and show of to my mates. But doesn't a single hard drive only support up to 4 partitions? So off I went and got Ubuntu running besides Mac. It wasnt recognized by neither the default boot-loader nor rEFIt straight away. I had to hold alt to come up with the special BIOS or something every time I needed to use Ubuntu (always).

I got up to a point where I could run Ubuntu with wireless, sound and pretty much everything working. Until the kernel updates were installed. Somehow I (or maybe it) managed to screw up and booting had become impossible, for it would crash halfway through with kernel errors and other undefined weirdnesses. Meanwhile I had tried installing Windows 7 on a different partition. Which I found to be catastrophic also. I was forced to put up with OSX, which in my opinion is fine at what it does but it doesn't do very much for me. After a couple of tries I had to give up on fiddling with Ubuntu for I needed Windows 7 to run software for school. So my current partition layout looks like this......

After that it finally starts loading the system.All the searching I have done only turned up solutions relevant to people with multiple hard drives. This was not an issue on Grub 1.
