Debian :: Running Apt-setup But The Command Isn't Recognised?
Jul 12, 2011
apt-get install startxwould sort this out but no joy. I don't seem to actually be able to get anything using apt-getI've tried running apt-setup but the command isn't recognised.I'm sure I'm connected up to the internet (I'm using a wired connection I run dhclient eth0 and check with ifconfig and eth0 seems all happy and connected up). I'm also trying to install mpg321 or mpg123 as it would be nice to have some tunes but I get the same "package not found" error message

I want to run a command on startup (Via startup applications) that has to wait for another program to run first.I don't seem to be able to use sleep to delay the command as it is stored in a .desktop file. How do I make it run later, preferably without having to create a script just for this one command. Also, how do I make the system start with compiz? Change "/desktop/gnome/session/required_components/windowmanager" ? Or do it the clean way by (Somehow) configuring gnome to use compiz?

I wanted to install Debian 8.0 on my second hdd in my UEFI machine, but when I choose UEFI boot from USB, GRUB command line appears, and I cannot boot up the setup. I used Rufus to create the bootable USB stick, using the amd64 kde CD image. I tried several images and I deleted the Linux and Efi partitions from previous installation of Ubuntu . Also I deleted GRUB from the Windows 7 Efi partition.
In the UEFI setup fast boot and secure boot are disabled, and I don't seem to have the option to boot in legacy mode, if I choose the simple USB boot option (without "UEFI" in front) I get "please insert correct boot media, and press any key or reboot". I couldn't manually boot from GRUB command line, because it is showing that all the drives are empty, and if I type "boot" I get "please load the kernel first".

I downloaded debian-6.0.1a-ia64-netinst.isoI burned this to a CD using wodimPopped the CD into a new desktop computer, pushed the power button and get the message:Robeet and Select proper Boot deviceor Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a keyI thought it might be something to do with the writing of the CD so I went to a Windows laptop, copied the ISO image over and then wrote the image to another blank CD on this machine. Tried booting this and received the same message.
The new computer will boot from other CDs, as I have an older Windows XP boot disk and that works just fine. What else can be wrong...??? Is the image valid? Has anybody else successfully downloaded and boot from this image? I kind of expect so but I don't know - maybe it's still really new.I have downloaded and installed Debian previously using this method, however back then I was using the i386 image. This time I checked and my cpu and board, the Intel 64 bit architecture should be fine so I don't see why I shouldn't be using this version.

I am not seeing what i am doing wrong here, but here goes:
From my server I need to run a command for backup on 25 remote servers (through a script). Now I have pushed the public keys for remote ssh connectivity on all of them and it works ( I can push files using rsync without the need to enter passwords on the remote servers), howver, I need to run the following command:
ssh odsadmin@10.139.111.1 'cp -a /var/www/life /var/www/life-v4'
when I run this command, I keep getting asked to enter the password, I even tried putting sudo in front of the cp, but still get the request to enter the password.

Sometimes I connect to my Debian box from another computer (using SSH on Cygwin or Linux), and once ina while I want to run some console apps. And sometimes some of these apps might complain about "another intance, Error: an instance of newsbeuter is already running (PID: 2496)". Is there a work around for this issue at all(without killing the original instance") ? The reason I do not want to kill the app because there might be 2 users connected to the same machine that might be using the same app.

I'm trying to setup an SMF forum on a server running Ubuntu Hardy. The problem is that the website on the server was built using Django. So considering that Django uses Python and SMF uses PHP, would it be possible for both of these to coexist on the same server? If so, how? If this can't be done, I'm more than willing to rebuild the website in PHP. If I were to do this, then what do I need to do to reconfigure Apache? As of right now it's using mod_wsgi, but I'm assuming I would need mod_php. How would I set this up?

I have a Fedora NAS (not built by me) there is a 1 Tera of storage 2x 500 set at raid 0. The server runs Fedora 7/8 I believe which, runs flawlessly. Sadly, I am running out of storage space and would like to add more. Can I just put another drive in the box? If so, what do I need to do and what impact does it have on the existing raid 0 setup. Ideally I would like to put two additional in but I am not confident how to configure them. Is this just a case of mapping them in Windows 7.

I have a nas / server running Slackware64-13.37 with two raid arrays, one with 3x500GB disks and the other with 2x2TB disks. I also have 1x80GB hdd which contains the os. I found a spare 250GB hdd from my closet and want to set up raid1 array from os hdd and that spare drive.I know that I can't make use of the extra 170GB of space but I don't care as long as I have working installation on the other disk if that 80GB hdd breaks. How can I set up that kind of raid1 without losing any data?

I have recently set up a network of 21 computers running Edubuntu 10.10 I use iTalc to communicate with the pcs and also to shutdown all of them at once. The only problem I have, is it doesn't start up again with iTalc. So I switched to ClusterSSH. Only problem I have now is that everytime I run cssh, I need to manually add IP addresses of all the pc's, before I can start issuing commands. Is there a config file or something I can populate with all the IP addresses so that it starts up with all of them already added? And while we are at it, the command to start up a computer on the network?

I want to either set up a dual-boot on my laptop, or make Linux the Primary with Windows running in something like a virtual box. I am very much into Android and I want to learn Linux as a result of that. So which Distro should be considered in a situation like this.

I've recently setup a custom home server running openSUSE 11.3 64-bit in terminal mode. I've since successfully setup and configured it to act as an iSCSI target using the iscsitarget package and the corresponding kernel module, along with the YaST module for the configuration. Prior to setting up my hard drive accordingly, however, I noticed that when I ran 'zypper up' in a terminal I got the following:
Code:
pph-server:~ # zypper up
Loading repository data...
Reading installed packages...
[Code]....
At the time I accepted, and found later that it removed the setup I had, meaning I had to start over. However when I ran YaST in a terminal it then wanted to re-install the iscsitarget package, which subsequently removed the tgt package, and so this continued for a bit. (Thankfully no actual data was stored on the target at this stage .) For the time being I've locked the iscsitarget package and the kernel module to prevent zypper from wanting to remove it and install tgt instead since I now have my target working as I want.
The question I have is why zypper was trying to remove iscsitarget and install tgt, and yet the corresponding YaST module was wanting to do the opposite. Is tgt considered a better option by the openSUSE developers, in some way, for setting up an iSCSI target? Is iscsitarget development/availability being ceased by them in favour of tgt? Is there something else I'm missing? Neither of these packages seems old to me: the latest version of iscsitarget was released on SourceForge last July, while tgt was only updated this month.

Trying to set up a LAN with an FC14 laptop, FC15 PC and a Windows machine running XP. I have SAMBA installed on both FC machines, but neither of them can see shares on each other or the XP machine. I can ping between all of them. The Windows machine sees all of the SAMBA shares.
When I attempt to Connect to Server under Places on the FC15 PC, I do not have a Windows share option to choose from as I do on the laptop, suggesting smbclient isn't configured correctly on that machine. SMB, NMB and WINBIND are installed and activated on startup on both FC machines. Although I have the Windows share option on the FC14 laptop, it will only connect with the IP address.
Firewalls and SELinux on both machines are disabled. Here are some configuration details:
rpm -qa | grep samba

samba-winbind-3.5.8-68.fc15.1.x86_64
