Server :: How To Setup Diskless PXE Client On Debian Lenny (HPC)

Aug 8, 2010

I currently have a debian lenny high performance cluster running seamlessly using dhcp and tftpd-hpa. All nodes are completely diskless, and i would like to keep it that way. I now would like to have a client boot over local into a full KDE desktop.

Here's the cache.
1. I would like the client to also be a node. I would like it to handle processing as the other nodes do, but this one with a full desktop, with ALL data and privileges accessible.
2. The client will have its own workstation graphics. It will need to have that driver loaded without slowing the system.
3. Client will need to be able to use its own usb, bd-rom, dvd, audio, etc. even though it will be booting into the HPC.
4. Wireless. I cannot run 70 ft of lan across an apartment. not happening.

The idea is a media center applicable "powerhouse" with high-end power and graphics for easy media editing, 3d creation, and gaming. Will also be used for webcache over all local, file sharing, and other server applications.

HPC specs:
-headnode: hp compaq p4-ht 3.2 ghz, 4x500gb, 4gb mem, gigabit ethernet, wireless-N
-nodes: 4x p4-ht 2.2 ghz, 2gb mem, no-name brand slim desktops; 2x panasonic toughbooks p4-mobile 1.8 ghz, 1.5gb mem; 3x gateway p3 unknown specs; and 1 hp 530 notebook 1.6ghz core2 duo, 1.5gb mem
-client: hp compaq core2 duo 2.13 ghz, 4gb mem, wireless n, bd-rom, 2x dvd-rom, usb 3.0 card, bluetooth, 1gb AGP nvidia geforce 6800 dual-dvi, no hd.
I need to know how to set up this PXE.

Debian Configuration :: Pxe Setup On Lenny

Feb 27, 2010

i am trying to get a pxe server working on a debian so other clients can boot off it. the problem has two parts.

1. getting the pxe working. so far the tftp part doesnt work. the client says tftp error. so i guess the dhcp portion is working, but theres something wrong with the /var/lib/tftpboot or the deamon config itself.
2. the other issue is that in the shop many system's have non-working disk drives. also many of them do not have a usb boot option in the bios. all i need to do is get the "bare" kernel file or grub(?) to boot over pxe and give me the ability to boot from a usb flash drive and load the rest of the linux files from there. my primary intention is NOT netinstall. although it wouldnt hurt. my intention is running a linux live usb on systems without bios usb boot support. ive read somewhere that a full pxe live boot requires nfs setup. i am asking for that, just so i can boot from a flash drive.

Networking :: Debian Lenny 5.0.7 AMD 64 Connection Stops Running?

Feb 23, 2011

I have a Dell PowerEdge 2900 on which I just installed from scratch Debian Lenny 5.0.7 AMD 64bit. I am having issues where when I ifup a second nic card the server will maintain connectivity for a period then all connectivity is lost and I have to ifdown all eth interfaces and bring them back up to regain connectivity. Here's how the server is laid out: I have 12gb or ram with 2 Xeon 5450s in the server, as I mentioned it's a Dell Poweredge 2900. It has a build in Perc6i raid controller with 2 drives in Raid 1 for the OS and 4 drives in Raid 5 for storage. It also has a Perc 5e card in it connected to 3x6TB raid arrays. I mention this because they are all sharing the PCI bus if that matters.

The nic cards I started with were the two builtin Broadcoms and lspci reports them both as:

Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme II BCM5708 Gigabit Ethernet (rev 12)

After I started experiencing the problem I added an inexpensive Trendnet based off the Realtek RTL-8169 chip rev(10). Debian sees this card without any need for additional drivers. The Broadcoms required the non-free network drivers provided by and built against the Debian kernel (no custom drivers). One nic card is configured with a public IP address and I use IP tables to reign in the traffic to http and https only. There is also an outbound openvpn tunnel from this machine back to our offices through this interface. The second nic card is hard wired to a mac mini directly and is assigned an 10.x.x.x address. I am able to see the mac mini from it.

The amount of time the network connection stays up doesn't seem to follow any set pattern. I have flood pinged the 10.x.x.x while running apt-get and one time it fails, the next time it doesn't. Sometimes the network connection degrades and I can do an nslookup one second and get nothing and the next I get a response. Finally though it fails and it requires me to ifdown the eth connections and ifup them to get them going again. I don't really see anything in the logs. I've looked in kern.log, messages, syslog and pretty much came up empty, but not 100% certain I'm looking for anything more subtle than obvious errors. The routes all look good too.

Naturally, as Murphy's Law would have it, this is a remote server at a colo so that doesn't make troubleshooting any easier. What I have done to temporarily prevent me from losing complete access to the server is setup a cron script that runs once a minute and pings something. If there is 100% packet loss, it restarts the nics and I'm going again for another arbitrary period of time. Lastly, this has no effect on the OS running. I don't have a hung system when this happens just a trashed network connection.

Debian Multimedia :: Just Installed Squeeze / Running Back To Lenny

Feb 6, 2011

I could not get the hardware to work with Lenny's ancient drivers, so I gave up and decided to upgrade to Squeeze.Well, the hardware works (except sound), but KDE4 is a such a disaster that I want to run not walk! all the way back to Lenny. I'm stunned that after four years of active development, this desktop still doesn't have something as basic as keyboard shortcuts or the ability to place icons where YOU want them.

The widgets frustrate me to no end. The new K menu is impossible to navigate. I'd rather hang myself than use Dolphin as a file manager. KDE4 gives me more notifications than MS Windows' crapware. And it's UGLY !!! The "Oxygen" theme makes me want to tear my eyeballs out.

Here are things that need to be done:

a)Configure the Guest with a static IP on my home network. Verify that I can telnet to port 25 of the Guest from a system on my home network.

b)Then configure my home firewall/NAT box to forward incoming connections on TCP port 25 to the static IP address I gave my Guest. Then test that I can telnet to port 25 from a system outside my home network.

c)After that I need to configure the appropriate DNS records for my domain so that outside hosts know how to contact my mailserver.

I installed for the sheer pleasure of it a webserver. includes apache2, postfix mail server, MySQL, MyDNS nameserver, PureFTPd, SpamAssassin, ClamAV, etc etc. (I have tried to use the config panels ispconfig and webmin)

The situation: There are 3 sites listed on the server, All 3 on different virtual hosts (obviously). The http access goes trough the 20080 port since my ISP blocks everything below 1024 (the bastards). I use a linksys router (192.168.1.1) with dmz pointing to 192.168.1.100 (server) The sites on the server:

inphone.be
fraksken.be
fraksken.is-a-geek.org (but appearently not geek enough)
I also gave them own IP's:

General :: Debian Lenny : How To Install Xfce 4.6 Instead Of Lenny's 4.4

Dec 14, 2009

i was trying to use gnome and kde but i don't like them. I tried xfce and it seem to fit my needs but.My computer is used to be powered on for a weeks. While time passes, a process xfdesktop begin to use more and more memory and to free RAM i need to log out and log in again.

I tried squeeze yesterday on my virtual machine and it has 4.6 and seem not to have that bug, RAM usage is static(yes it still works when i write this and have memory usage 34492k, which is not changing for an hours of usage already), also 4.6 is MUCH better than 4.4.

i already tried adding squeeze to "sources.list" but i can see too many dependencies which should be upgraded if i install 4.6, i'm beginning to afraid it can crash entire GUI(or entire system, i can see there is libc6 required to be updated).

Networking :: Setting Up A VPN With OpenVPN On A Debian Lenny Server?

Sep 9, 2010

I'm setting up a VPN with openVPN on a debian lenny server. I successfully installed it in the server, then created the certificates and both client (winXP) and server config files. For the client I use openVPN gui. I tested the tunnel and everything went just fine. I even can ping the openVPN server from the XP client. But thats all. I can't ping any machine behind the openvpn server. Some facts that you may find useful to help me with this issue are:

- The openVPN server is not the default gateway of the LAN. The dg is a pfsense server
- I dont have iptables enabled (policy of all chains are ACCEPT).
- I have configured ip forwarding (echo "1" >/proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward)

[code]....

I have checked and all seems to be OK. I think that the problem is connected with routing the traffic from the vpn to my LAN but I don't know how to do that (besides the push route line in the server.conf).
