Since i upgraded to 10.4 my printer doesnt work. My Canon IP 4200 printer is attached via USB. If i turn it on nothing happens.
I look in the online help it says CUPS isnt running. How do i turn this on? I cant find it.
Installed fedora/configued samba, shared printer and i am not able to access shared printer from any of the fedora machine. I am able to access the printer /shared folder from windows machine. I dont know the process of cups installation.
View 1 Replies View Relatedwe are having new printers. At the moment we over 1000 machines on multiple sites but no print server they are manually added on the machine ( I know don't ask).
Anyway there is no way they would let use a windows server so the only option I have is to use linux however I little unsure if it is capable of doing the job I need it to do. Basically I want to add the printers on the linux server either using samba or ipp (I would assume samba would be best).
The reason i want to do this is when we have to do around the machines I just want to go around the machines and just the map the printer and it brings down the driver and config etc as we want them to duplex. The issue is I been trying to gain information on the internet and getting conflicting information apparently I can add the windows driver onto the server so when I map the printer it brings it down. However some guides state you still have through the whole process of adding the printer and then choosing the driver etc. Which kinda of makes it pointless to do the printer server since I would already have to do this anyway if we don't have one.
I just want to go be able to go around the machines and for example click star run and do something like \192.168.1.1printer01 and then it done kind of thing.
apt-get install startxwould sort this out but no joy. I don't seem to actually be able to get anything using apt-getI've tried running apt-setup but the command isn't recognised.I'm sure I'm connected up to the internet (I'm using a wired connection I run dhclient eth0 and check with ifconfig and eth0 seems all happy and connected up). I'm also trying to install mpg321 or mpg123 as it would be nice to have some tunes but I get the same "package not found" error message

Not using the web interface, or the GUI of another computer connected to the CUPS server.I always get to the point shown in the attached screenshot, and then I am asked for a password, which never works. I've practically slaughtered my cupsd.conf, and it now looks like this:

it looks like the above should tell CUPS to never ever ask for authentication, but as you can see in the second screenshot, it still does!
I have a wire network connection to a printer over my Lan. It is an HP 3210 All-in-One series. Can someone tell me whether cups is capable of printing to this printer? Or do I need to use HP's drivers (:::shudder::?

View 3 Replies View RelatedSo I have a Zebra S4M label printer that I have managed to get mostly working under CUPS. To make that work, I have the printer upgraded with the latest firmware, CUPS 1.4.1 with its AppArmor profile disabled and the Zebra EPL/ZPL ppd file that's floating about the internet loaded into cups. The printer is connected via USB to the computer, and is set up in cups using ZPL. The computer acts as a print server for other computers, and everything seems to work ok, with one exception. When the printer runs out of paper or runs out of ink ribbon, the printer stops and displays an error on screen, but CUPS never stops. It keeps taking jobs, sends them to the printer and reports that everything is A-OK. It appears at a certain point, the printer's memory gets full and then CUPS sort of hangs.
But it still doesn't display and errors or stop the quque, it just starts this weird behavior where it eats jobs or combines them into one giant job that it just sits on. What I need is for CUPS to know that the printer is out of paper or ribbon and pause the queue until the error status is clear. I know that this printer is communicating its status in some way, as when it's connected to a windows machine, the print queue stops when the paper runs out. How to get CUPS to recognize the printer status so that I'm not losing jobs? I've tried digging through the debug logs but there doesn't seems to be much help there. I do notice that from time to time CUPS says it's discarding "unused printer status changed" and "unused job progress" events but other than that, nothing I see of interest.

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy work has switched to Fuji Xerox printers, which up to today I've been able to print to simply by sending a PostScript file to their IP addresses. But as of today printing requires a login. Here are the (Windows) instructions:
"Start>Settings>Printers and Faxes>R-Click on the printer>Properties>Configuration>Accounting>Change the dropdown box �Use Login Name� to �Enter owner name�>Type in your staff ID number in the User ID box e.g. �e*******�>OK>Apply"
how do I apply this to CUPS? Where can I find an owner name in CUPS?

The workaround is to use the IP address of the computers.
Problem is that CUPS has the printer address with the computer name as opposed to IP addresses.
CUPS will not let me manage the network printer. It asks for a user and password. My sudo name and password dont work.
I think the solution lies in the cups.conf but I am unsure how to fix it so that I can manage the printers.
Is it possible to setup a printer without cups, most of Linuxes try to setup cups, which is basically for Notworks, but it really doesn't help much with a stand alone and more of nuisance and a hindrance.

I cannot use root because I have locked it out and currently use sudo with my main account. After much work, I got a PPD file for a Dell printer working - albeit not the exact one I need (5330dn), but close enough to work (3100cn). Question: when I look at the list of printers in CUPS, I see a bunch of extra printers that are on the network, but that I didn't add. How do I remove them (ie. I have a HP Officejet G85 and I just upgraded my system, which included the whole printer subsystem, and lost my printing. I have tried adding it via KDE's print dialog as well as directly via CUPS (localhost:631), to no avail.

I can successfully view the Windows 7 shares using SAMBA, but when I choose NETWORK PRINTER > WINDOWS PRINTER via SAMBA > BROWSE, I receive an error "NO PRINT SHARES - There were no print shares found. Please check that the Samba service is marked as trusted in your firewall configuration."
I have no firewall installed, the Windows printer is shared, and before I upgraded to Natty, all worked fine under Ubuntu Maverick. When I run the "testparm" command, I noticed that the line under [printers] states "browseable = No" even though in my smb.conf file it is set to "browseable = yes" (and I have changed/saved this file several times, using "sudo" with the same result).
I would like someone to look over my enclosed settings and see if there is a tweak I need to make in order to browse my Windows 7 shared printer.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am on Ubuntu 10.04. I had a network printer added, but suddenly now the printer seems to have disappeared. What's more, System->Administration->Printing doesn't allow me to add a new printer.The System->Admin.->Printing troubleshoot said the following:
"The CUPS print spooler does not appear to be running. To correct this, choose System->Administration->Services from the main menu and look for 'cups'". System->Admin.->Services does not exist. Searching on the net led me to believe that /etc/init.d/cups start would start cups for me, but that does not seem to be happening.
My printer no longer prints anything with exception to the TestPrint page.Any other job I give it, it says is "completed" in the queue, though nothing has printed. Installed cups again, after a complete removal. No change. Heres what troubleshooting gave me:

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a Brother DCP585CW and have installed the drivers from Brother and it worked fine on Ubuntu 9.10 on both my desktop and laptop. I have installed 10.04 on both and now the problem. It works fine on the desktop but I get a problem on the laptop. It is a wireless printer and I can print to it but only after I do 2 things each time I reboot the laptop. I have to configure it through cups (http://localhost:631) because it keeps getting set to being connected via USB and letter rather than A4 paper on each boot but the correct setting is:

I am probably going to get blasted for this statement which is a result of four days of frustration.There are many people on here who are having problems getting their printers to work with Ubuntu. In my case it is version 10:04. I have been reading and trying fixes for four days. Nothing works.Surely this has got to the attention of the people who know what they are doing and design these programs. I sure don't know how to fix this, along with a lot of other users. We are not being lazy or arrogant. Nothing seems to work.Surely someone in the hierarchy can put in a patch that fixes this problem.The fact that Ubuntu won't print for so many people surely must be a priority inhe development of this software. So, please will one of the program developers fix this problem and send out a patch.

I have cups, which I don't recall installing but was there guess its a default. So I added a printer on my server, that was on a 10.0.1.1 block, added it as lpd://10.0.1.1/lab3printer. Ok that worked and printed from my server, but my problem is when other machines try to add the printer. I continue getting this problem
