Feb 7, 2011I have recently set up a network of 21 computers running Edubuntu 10.10 I use iTalc to communicate with the pcs and also to shutdown all of them at once. The only problem I have, is it doesn't start up again with iTalc. So I switched to ClusterSSH. Only problem I have now is that everytime I run cssh, I need to manually add IP addresses of all the pc's, before I can start issuing commands. Is there a config file or something I can populate with all the IP addresses so that it starts up with all of them already added? And while we are at it, the command to start up a computer on the network?

Jun 27, 2011Trying to set up a LAN with an FC14 laptop, FC15 PC and a Windows machine running XP. I have SAMBA installed on both FC machines, but neither of them can see shares on each other or the XP machine. I can ping between all of them. The Windows machine sees all of the SAMBA shares.
When I attempt to Connect to Server under Places on the FC15 PC, I do not have a Windows share option to choose from as I do on the laptop, suggesting smbclient isn't configured correctly on that machine. SMB, NMB and WINBIND are installed and activated on startup on both FC machines. Although I have the Windows share option on the FC14 laptop, it will only connect with the IP address.
Firewalls and SELinux on both machines are disabled. Here are some configuration details:

Jun 24, 2010I'm trying to setup an SMF forum on a server running Ubuntu Hardy. The problem is that the website on the server was built using Django. So considering that Django uses Python and SMF uses PHP, would it be possible for both of these to coexist on the same server? If so, how? If this can't be done, I'm more than willing to rebuild the website in PHP. If I were to do this, then what do I need to do to reconfigure Apache? As of right now it's using mod_wsgi, but I'm assuming I would need mod_php. How would I set this up?

Jul 30, 2011I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 (kernel version 2.6.38) on my Pandaboard. When I run iwconfig, wlan0 shows up but the wireless is disabled. I am not able to start it up. I have not installed any patches or anything. Either upgrade kernel to 2.6.39+ or patch the existing drivers.

Feb 4, 2010Im trying to setup multiple domU through the default bridge setup. I am able to access only one of them through the network at a time. If you ping one of the domU it works perfectly but you cannot ping any of the others until you stop pinging the one and even then it takes a bit before you can. Ive looked around for a while and seen similar problems but nothing ever seems quite the same. Im probably missing something really stupid. Or is this the way the bridge is supposed to behave? Do i need to use a routed virtual network?

Dec 25, 2010Hi. I have Ubuntu 10.04, nm-applet is running in the background, my battery icon and sound icon are showing but my network icon has been missing for the past 2 days. It was working fine before but now it's not. How can I fix this issue if I don't have an ethernet cord? Is there a way to roll back the recent updates or do I need to reinstall my network manager?
I've tried restarting the system and I've tried killing nm-applet and reloading it using Alt F2. I get some Debug error.
When I try to run nm-applet --sm-disable
It says an instance is already running and then gives me a warning.
I tried removing "iface eth0 inet dhcp" from /etc/network/interfaces and then tried restarting by "sudo /etc/initi.d/networking restart"

I don't seem to actually be able to get anything using apt-getI've tried running apt-setup but the command isn't recognised.I'm sure I'm connected up to the internet (I'm using a wired connection I run dhclient eth0 and check with ifconfig and eth0 seems all happy and connected up). I'm also trying to install mpg321 or mpg123 as it would be nice to have some tunes but I get the same "package not found" error message

Feb 3, 2011I have a Fedora NAS (not built by me) there is a 1 Tera of storage 2x 500 set at raid 0. The server runs Fedora 7/8 I believe which, runs flawlessly. Sadly, I am running out of storage space and would like to add more. Can I just put another drive in the box? If so, what do I need to do and what impact does it have on the existing raid 0 setup. Ideally I would like to put two additional in but I am not confident how to configure them. Is this just a case of mapping them in Windows 7.

I found a spare 250GB hdd from my closet and want to set up raid1 array from os hdd and that spare drive.I know that I can't make use of the extra 170GB of space but I don't care as long as I have working installation on the other disk if that 80GB hdd breaks. Mar 30, 2010I have an interesting situation. I'd like to use bittorrent for legitimate purposes (mainly linux distro based) but the powers that be have blocked access to bittorrent at my university. I have an ubuntu VPS that I use for odds and ends and was thinking that I could setup a SOCKS5 server on it. That way, I can input the SOCKS5 info directly into the proxy section of my local bittorrent application (Transmission 1.92 running on snow leopard) and be good to go. The problem, however, is that I cannot find a way to get a SOCKS server up and running on my VPS. I've heard that ssh can be used as a simple SOCKS server, but I've also heard that i may need to install a more complete SOCKS server such as dante. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Feb 5, 2011I've recently setup a custom home server running openSUSE 11.3 64-bit in terminal mode. I've since successfully setup and configured it to act as an iSCSI target using the iscsitarget package and the corresponding kernel module, along with the YaST module for the configuration. Prior to setting up my hard drive accordingly, however, I noticed that when I ran 'zypper up' in a terminal I got the following:

At the time I accepted, and found later that it removed the setup I had, meaning I had to start over. However when I ran YaST in a terminal it then wanted to re-install the iscsitarget package, which subsequently removed the tgt package, and so this continued for a bit. (Thankfully no actual data was stored on the target at this stage .) For the time being I've locked the iscsitarget package and the kernel module to prevent zypper from wanting to remove it and install tgt instead since I now have my target working as I want.
The question I have is why zypper was trying to remove iscsitarget and install tgt, and yet the corresponding YaST module was wanting to do the opposite. Is tgt considered a better option by the openSUSE developers, in some way, for setting up an iSCSI target? Is iscsitarget development/availability being ceased by them in favour of tgt? Is there something else I'm missing? Neither of these packages seems old to me: the latest version of iscsitarget was released on SourceForge last July, while tgt was only updated this month.

Jan 28, 2010have been trying to setup a dual boot system with ubuntu and XP running side by side on my Thinkpad T41.tried it a few times and always causes the same problem. i have 40 gig HDD, on which i create a 13 gig NTFS partition and leave the rest as free space. then install XP on the NTFS partition. no problems.
then i boot from the ubuntu disk (9.10 Karmic) and install using the "use free space" option at the partition section. ubuntu installs ok, and boots fine from GRUB 2.0. BUT when i select the XP option from GRUB's list, it starts to boot XP, i get the standard XP loading screen for three seconds and then it crashes to a blue screen critical problem, and restarts the system. when i then boot from the xp cd and go into recovery mode CHKDSK will not recognise the disk, and DISKPART shows one HDD at 35 gig which it cannot access.
this means i cant run FIXBOOT and get my xp install running again. every time i do this process it produces the same problem. tried at first with xp installed on whole HDD, and reducing the xp partition size. killed XP. then tried ubuntu first and xp second - but this caused the same inaccessible disk problem - xp would not recognise the partitions and would not install. so i slipstreamed my XP install disk to SP2 hoping this would make it recognise the partitions, but no luck there. so had to format all and repartition the 13 gig NTFS for xp. installed xp again without difficulty but ubuntu install killed my xp in the same way.

Nov 18, 2010I've been learning linux for a while now with half an eye on making a career out of it in future. One sizeable gap in my knowledge at the moment is networking. Is it feasible/desirable to set up a network of virtual machines to use as an environment to learn networking? My budget is non-existent so I was hoping to be able to get a basic understanding of the principles from installing a few desktops, a virtual gateway etc on VMware workstation on my laptop, and doing a lot of reading online.
Is this feasible, or will I just end up learning about virtual networks instead of real ones? Also how much power would be required, because my 3GB RAM lappy has just gone bang and all I have now is a (new) 1GB RAM lappy.

Aug 2, 2010I recently bought the D-Link DIR-655 and DWA-140 wireless setup just before converting completely to Linux from windows. I'm sure there are issues with the ralink rt2870 chipset. I did get this to work after a few days of trying various things, but I could not get Wireless N to work, it only operates in G mode. This seems to have something to do with needing to use AES for N-mode. My wireless setup will only work with Ubuntu if I have TKIP set. This of course requires my entire network to work at G speeds. Consequently I am returning my D-Link setup tomorrow, and am looking for the community opinion on what Router/adapter setup is truly out-of-the-box compatible with Ubuntu 10.04. This Router will need to be compatible with other windows based computers on the network running the DWA-140 USB adapters. (I have no PCI slots available).

Mar 5, 2011I am a linux novice with root access to an Ubunutn 10 VM which i connect to via putty. I want to connect to it via a GUI from windows xp so I have tried installing x11vnc on the machine and used realvnc from the xp client I have tried to install x11vnc on the machine as follows

This seems to load ok but removes the shell prompt. I presume the server has started and is listening on the ports so i used another putty window to reconnect to my machine and ran sockstat -l and xllvnc is listening on the 2 ports. I then downloaded realvnc windows client and entered the hostname to connect If i entered just the hostname or hostname:5900 i get a timeout error but if i enter hostname:5800 i get 'connection refused' error
