Ubuntu Networking :: Setup A Network Of 21 Computers Running Edubuntu 10.10?

Feb 7, 2011

I have recently set up a network of 21 computers running Edubuntu 10.10 I use iTalc to communicate with the pcs and also to shutdown all of them at once. The only problem I have, is it doesn't start up again with iTalc. So I switched to ClusterSSH. Only problem I have now is that everytime I run cssh, I need to manually add IP addresses of all the pc's, before I can start issuing commands. Is there a config file or something I can populate with all the IP addresses so that it starts up with all of them already added? And while we are at it, the command to start up a computer on the network?

Ubuntu Servers :: Setup An Office Network Consisting Of Three Computers?

Sep 16, 2010

I am wanting to setup an office network consisting of three computers and one server. We already have the equipment ready with Vista Business pre-installed on the computers. I want to be able to create a network which allows users to use any machine as this will reduce downtime should a machine break. Also I would like user's files to be held centrally on the server which makes backups easier.

The most important element here is data backup. As like most businesses we are moving away from paper and using the computers to store important records such as customer information. If this data were to be lost, the business would come to a complete halt.

I have been looking at the idea of installing a Microsoft Small Business Server as it would be nice to have centralised control of the machines. However the cost would be over 800 which can not be justified for three machines and five users. Therefore I am turning to Linux for a alternative solution. I have previously used CentOS and Ubuntu for home use but never really gained much knowledge or experience of either.

It is my understanding that Samba can act as a Primary Domain Controller, which if I'm not mistaken is where it handles the network logins and profiles. Is this correct? I have come across many samba tutorials online but whats confusing is they are all different. Some of the tutorials involve using Kerberos and OpenLDAP. Do I need to learn about either of these? What do they do and what benefit will they bring?

Finally, I see Samba 4 is in development and is likely to bring a lot of new features which aren't available in Samba 3. Is this worth waiting for because I don't want to be upgrading everything again 6 months down the road?

Ubuntu Networking :: Network Computers Not Accessible By Host-name

Aug 16, 2010

For some reason, all the computers on my network can't reach each other via their host names. For example, the ping command doesn't recognize host names:

Code:

$ ping file-server
PING file-server (208.68.139.89) 56(84) bytes of data.
^C
--- file-server ping statistics ---

20 packets transmitted, 0 received, 100% packet loss, time 19152ms However, ping works fine if I use IP addresses instead. I would put the address for "file-server" in my /etc/hosts file, except for the fact that DHCP changes it's address occasionally.I attempted changing the line

send host-name "<host-name>";
in /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf to
send host-name "file-server";

but to no avail.

Ubuntu Networking :: Monitor Network Traffic (for All Computers)?

Sep 27, 2010

what I want to achieve is just to be able to say to who ever is killing our relatively fast connect that they aren't the only person using the network. Everyone just says "I hardly download anything." which is obviously untruthful as normally I can download at 1.5 MB/s but now loading even google.com takes way too long (same with pinging and all other sites). Once I do this, I can determine whether or not I need to call my ISP and do the long 'on hold' dance and "have you tried rebooting the router" BS.

Networking :: Sync PDA & Other Computers Across Home Network

Apr 17, 2010

I am interested and looking forward to get a smartphone or a personal data assistant with calendar/ email/ contacts just like the iphone does.My intention is to be able to sync my smartphone's data with my home server that actually carries my PIM applications. Basically, during the day when I am not home I will modify or add/remove data from the phone. When I arrive home I would like to be able to sync my changes to my server. My laptop will be reconfigured to retrieve and sync from that server.

Proudly running with Slackware on ALL my machines (gotta love Slack!), and Apple being **** by not supporting open source and linux environment, it seems that it will be difficult to have something working out of the box and will probably require jail-breaking the device, etc.. I don't want to rely on external services such as Google calendar except for the email from Gmail.

Ubuntu Networking :: Cannot See Network Icon - Nm-applet Running - Notification Area Running

Dec 25, 2010

Hi. I have Ubuntu 10.04, nm-applet is running in the background, my battery icon and sound icon are showing but my network icon has been missing for the past 2 days. It was working fine before but now it's not. How can I fix this issue if I don't have an ethernet cord? Is there a way to roll back the recent updates or do I need to reinstall my network manager?

I've tried restarting the system and I've tried killing nm-applet and reloading it using Alt F2. I get some Debug error.

When I try to run nm-applet --sm-disable

It says an instance is already running and then gives me a warning.

I tried removing "iface eth0 inet dhcp" from /etc/network/interfaces and then tried restarting by "sudo /etc/initi.d/networking restart"

It says:

What can I do to connect to the internet? I have a flash stick if its possible to download a .deb package on this mac and transfer it over to my other laptop to fix the problem. If its possible.

Networking :: Building System Router - Can't Access Computers On Other Side Of Network / Fix It?

May 20, 2009

I have built a linux router with a pc having two network cards. I am running ubuntu 8.10.

I have enabled forwarding on the router. One network (192.168.1.0/24)is connected to eth0 and another (192.168.2.0/24) is connected to eth1.

The interfaces have addresses 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.2.1.

On any side side of the network, I can ping both interfaces on the router.

However when I ping a machine on the other side of the network, I get 100% packet loss.

I have not touched iptables on the router or any machines.

Ubuntu :: Setup Apache To Serve Only The Computers In The LAN?

Jun 10, 2010

I use to keep a running instance of Apache in order to test my sites locally. I'm usually not that fussy about security, assuming my 80 and 8080 ports are closed (and, well, also the other ones).Anyway this evening I was just logging into PHPMyAdmin when I found the default username was a string of garbled characters. When I entered PHPMyAdmin, I was greeted with the message

Code: Additional features have been disabled in order to work with linked tables. To find out why click here.So I clicked and it seems that the error comes from the table

Code:
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['tracking']
which has been disabled. Everything else SEEMS ok at first sight. So now I have got a few questions.

1) I checked via canyouseeme.org and the default ports are still closed. This mean it should be impossible to even try to do something on my Apache remotely, right?

2) How do I reenable the additional features?

3) How do I check if someone else logged in?

4) What about the garbled name at the login? This should be just a Firefox thing, or actually PHPMyAdmin does suggest the name of the latest login?

5) How do I set up Apache to serve only the computers in the LAN? At worst, even only the local computer would be good.

Ubuntu Servers :: LDAP - Centralized Log On Scheme Setup With 10 Computers

Aug 16, 2010

I'm trying to set up a centralized log-on scheme in a research lab with about 10 computers. It's looking like we're going with LDAP - this decision may be out of my control (but if there's an alternative that would be REALLY better, do let me know). My question is we don't really have a domain name, so when all the tutorials say cn=example,cn=com, I can't mimic this exactly. I've been trying to get away with just one, like cn=researchlab. Will LDAP work with just one, or do I need to invent a second also? On the flipside, will it work with more? Our server can be reached by
lab.department.school.edu, could I do cn=lab,cn=department,cn=school,cn=edu?

Fedora Networking :: Setup A LAN With An FC14 Laptop - FC15 PC And A Windows Machine Running XP?

Jun 27, 2011

Trying to set up a LAN with an FC14 laptop, FC15 PC and a Windows machine running XP. I have SAMBA installed on both FC machines, but neither of them can see shares on each other or the XP machine. I can ping between all of them. The Windows machine sees all of the SAMBA shares.

When I attempt to Connect to Server under Places on the FC15 PC, I do not have a Windows share option to choose from as I do on the laptop, suggesting smbclient isn't configured correctly on that machine. SMB, NMB and WINBIND are installed and activated on startup on both FC machines. Although I have the Windows share option on the FC14 laptop, it will only connect with the IP address.

Firewalls and SELinux on both machines are disabled. Here are some configuration details:

rpm -qa | grep samba
samba-3.5.8-68.fc15.1.x86_64
samba-winbind-3.5.8-68.fc15.1.x86_64

Networking :: Feasible / Desirable To Setup A Network Of Virtual Machines To Use As An Environment To Learn Networking?

Nov 18, 2010

I've been learning linux for a while now with half an eye on making a career out of it in future. One sizeable gap in my knowledge at the moment is networking. Is it feasible/desirable to set up a network of virtual machines to use as an environment to learn networking? My budget is non-existent so I was hoping to be able to get a basic understanding of the principles from installing a few desktops, a virtual gateway etc on VMware workstation on my laptop, and doing a lot of reading online.

Is this feasible, or will I just end up learning about virtual networks instead of real ones? Also how much power would be required, because my 3GB RAM lappy has just gone bang and all I have now is a (new) 1GB RAM lappy.
