Jun 10, 2010I have very strange problems with all the good audio mp3 players in Ubuntu. Not the bad programs only the good (whcich have good skins and library and so on). Amarok for some reason skips all the music files but only mp3 if I put m3u online radio it works. It doesn't show errors at all just skips the songs. I've never had issues with mp3 files before. The movie player works liek a charm but is too cheap (no library to browse files). Banshee was great and suddenly it stopped working just like the good old Rhythmbox... They appear to be starting in background but don't show nowhere. I cannot install XMMS players too it isn't found on the apt-get server. Also my packages are fully updated.
Reinstalling the programs don't help at all! It must be some major issue with the programs not launching. It's not a single program Banshee, Rhythmbox and I think some other but don't remember the names. Movie player plays all but is too simple. I want something like Winamp with nice library please help. No need for movies just mp3. Exaile works not fine with mp3 but I preffer how Rhytmhbox shows the music library with all the songs not like in seperate folders. I could try song shuffle. But why the other programs don't start what command can show what's happening?

Mar 2, 2010I've been tweaking my kernel for RT performance over the past few days, and just recently, it's begun randomly cutting sound playback, and I can't seem to figure out why.
Was watching a movie last night using VLC, and about 5 minutes in, sound playback just totally stopped while video kept working. Sound driver in VLC was set to Pulseaudio. I switched it to ALSA and the problem seemed fixed.
In Decibel Audio Player, the tracks randomly just stop in the middle of a song occasionally (every 5 songs or so, give or take), and a little red 'X' appears next to the track that got "skipped." Screenshot:

Don't recall it happening before I tweaked all the RT audio settings.

Jan 12, 2010I am trying to record audio playback from an application and the microphone at the same time on recordmydesktop using pulse audio. I just can't figure out how to mix them both. I have tried a lot already and can only get either the mic or the audio playback to be recorded, not both. Can this be done using pavucontroll?
I have been search now for hours to find a solution (also here on the forum) for this and getting really frustrated now. Maybe i'm just missing something really obvious, so sorry if this is a stupid question.

May 16, 2010ok i upgraded to 10.04 lucid and now if i want to stream audio i get jerky audio with screen flickers and video streaming or not causes a complete lockup of the application. this all worked fine with 9.10.

Apr 21, 2011I have a problem with audio file playback (all formats - mp3, ogg, etc.). When I try to play a file with rhythmbox or totem, the whole system gets sluggish and the mouse pointer jerks about the screen and there is no sound at all... UNTIL I drag the playback slider along with the mouse for a second, then playback is normal and the mouse pointer and system returns to normal speed... How do I fix this?
Problem is on maverick 10.10

Mar 10, 2010This is 16 bit / 44100 Hz sample. Try to plyback this sample in your favorite music player, and after that try to use command "play SB_test.wav". You see, second part of this file sounds very differently. This is because all your 44100 Hz audio resampled 48000 Hz. It's ok if you watch DVD's (48000 Hz audio), but nasty if you listen CD-Audio (44100 Hz), DVD-Audio or Blu-ray (24 bit / 96000 Hz and 192000 Hz). My question is: how to playback audio with different characteristics without resampling?

Nov 13, 2010how can I adjust the volume level while recording audio playback and microphone at the same time? I managed to increase the audio playback volume with PulseAudio Volume Control (Input devices -> Monitor of Internal Audio Analog Stereo -> pressing green button "Set as fallback"), but once I click on that green button, no no microphone sound is recorded.

Jul 23, 2011Ubuntu 64bit. The sound system works and plays noises correctly when I test the speakers in sound preferances. The internet BBCi player(Radio) plays sound correctly. Banshee & Rhythmbox try to play music files at double, or more, speed with no sound output. Spotify Linux version also tries to playback at double speed with no sound output. Media Player attempts to play music files at high speed. Media player plays the Video and audio tracks at high speed. VLC Will play the video at normal speed but with no audio.

Jun 14, 2011I am using debian squeeze and did an aptitude upgrade yesterday. Today I've found that VLC won't play any video; the files open and the audio plays, but the video is black. The aptitude log is below.
I note that VLC received a security upgrade a few days ago, but my suspicion is that the source of this problem is more likely to be the upgrade of libavcodec52 from version 4:0.5.2.6 -> 5:0.6.1+svn20101128-0.2. I believe this upgrade came from the debian-multimedia stable repo I have enabled.
Does this sound right, and what could I do to fix my VLC playback? This is new territory for me, and I'm slightly surprised that such an upgrade would come from the stable branch of debian-multimedia (although I know this is not an official source).

Jul 17, 2010When I play videos in VLC, the video output seems to randomly freeze while playing the video. This does not effect the audio though. The audio output continues, but with the video frozen on a frame. This is happening in windowed and full-screen mode. I have to use "pkill vlc" each time twice then start VLC again. I have had to resort to mplayer for the time being. I am running squeeze. I was not experiencing this problem before though (started within the past week), so it must be due to some recent upgrade. I have tried "aptitude purge vlc && aptitude install vlc", but I am still experiencing the same problem.

At first it worked perfectly, but now for some reason, only Chromium gets resized when I plug/unplug the cable. HDMI output is correctly activated upon cable insertion, but when taking the cable out again, the desktop resolution remains the same (larger than my laptop resolution), so the panels etc. are invisible.

But everytime I logout or restart I,m back to the default theme?

Mar 21, 2010I am not able to play certain encrypted DVD's under Lenny. Some of these DVD's worked fine in a previous installation (Mandriva 2008.1) in the same laptop (nx6125). I tried with several players (Kaffeine, vlc, mplayer), but nothing works. I know that the DVD drive is OK, since I was a able to watch an unencrypted DVD. I also have libdvdnav4, libdvdread3, libdvdcss2, w32codecs already installed.

May 22, 2011I have avi, mpeg etc files associated with SMplayer. When I double click a file SMplayer DOES lunch but it never starts the playback. Not even the play key is active, and the seek bar and volume bar are frozen. If I go Open-->File and chose a file, everything works great.

Jul 31, 2011A relative of mine who uses Debian 6.0.2 has bought a Samsung HMX-H300 Camcorder which records videos in:
1. H.264 (MPEG4 part10/AVC) format
2. High Definition Video (HD-VIDEO)
3. Standard Definition Video.
I notice that the PC requirement for the camcorder's bundled software, apart from the usual Windows XP SP2/Vista/Windows 7, lists an Intel Core Duo 1.66 minimum CPU and an NVIDIA GeForce 8500 or higher or ATI HD 2600 series or higher.
My relative has an old Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 2.30GHz computer which only has an AGP GeForce FX 5200 but after copying the videos from the Memory Card to /home it is just about possible to play them using Totem Movie Player and VLC but, although the audio is OK the video is painfully slow or almost stationary.
Is there a way to view the videos recorded in these formats with this hardware? Can they be converted to another format? Or should he consider buying a better computer?

I have used xfce for a long time, but in an attempt to get away from needing to haul a mouse everywhere, I decided to migrate to xmonad (raw, with no DE), a tiling window manager that is extremely keyboard-friendly. I've also switched to conkeror (not konqueror, mind you), a very keyboard-friendly firefox-based browser. I have completely eliminated my need for a mouse on this laptop and have even disabled the touchpad by blacklisting the psmouse driver. There is still an annoying visible cursor sitting in the middle of the screen upon starting X. Is there anyway to (probably in the X config files) disable the visible cursor, or if not, have its default starting location be the bottom right corner (where it's least visible)?

Apr 4, 2010A while back I started this topic in: [URL]. I settled on bugsbunny's suggestion of the Black DMZ cursors, because it worked a little better than the default. I have also looked at the Crystal cursor theme with no luck: No matter what choice, there is always an outline around the cursor on either black or white background. All I am hoping for is a simple hairline cursor that turns white over black background and black over a white background.
For my tired eyes, the blobiness of a cursor outline makes it awfully hard to control placing the cursor between the precise two letters necessary for selecting text. Is this maybe a Window Manager, rather than cursor problem? Or maybe I am looking for an interaction between Pointer and Window Manager that is not really an option under X11. (Btw. my Window Manager is Openbox with the Gnome Desktop support option).

Mar 22, 2015My mouse cursor is disappearing when it's not moving, or when I scroll a window with the middle wheel... Then when I move the mouse, the cursor is appearing!
This has started after few things...:
- old video card has died (ati hd4850)
- integrated motherboard video card used (ati hd4250) after solving the black screen (xorg, ati drivers... you know :s )
- since many weeks, computer has not been used before I've plugged a hd7970, solved 1 more time the black screen (.....)
And after many updates + this new video card = cursor is kidding :p
I've tried to change my cursor settings in the GUI config, nothing better.
MATE + XFCE
Problem solved by renaming all cursor files...

May 16, 2010I've been trying out suspend occasionally on Debian Testing to see if it works. After the last time though Gnome won't come back up again, I just get a movable mouse cursor and no panels or right-click options even after rebooting. I can switch to text consoles and kill X but starting it again results in the same behaviour. I noticed there have been a few Gnome and Xorg updates lately.
