Fedora :: System Grinds To Halt - Takes Several Seconds Just To Move Cursor

Aug 21, 2011

I'm running Fedora 14. I'm running a Athlon X2 with 4gb memory and nVidia 8400. I'm using the nvidia drivers ver 260. I'm running KDE 4.6. I've disabled desktop effects (when turnt on they work a charm, performance issues are the same either way). If I open any more than a few applications at once, the system grinds to a halt. even working with Kwrite is painful and it can take several seconds just to move the cursor, browsing the file is almost impossible.

When I have even 7 windows open X goes into a frenzy and sticks around 90% cpu usage. Even with no windows open if I move my mouse between screens X cpu usage stays between 50% and 90%. The system is unbearably slow. i have a XP Pro system with the same spec, lower GPU and I have no problems having 2/3 Visual Studios open, Photoshop, a few skype windows, Eclipse and the android emulator the system remains responsive but with this Linux box I can't even do basic stuff in Kwrite without it grinding to a haltJust.

Ubuntu :: How Do I Turn Off Beep In Virtual Terminal

Feb 9, 2010

I'm running ubuntu 9.10 on a Dell XPS M1530. Sometimes i get a _VERY_ loud beep-sound, eg when i run out of battery or, the case that has me coming here when i'm working in a virtual terminal (tty1-6) and hit backspace once too often, that is, when the command line is actually empty. Not that big of a deal you might think, but, especially when you're wearing good (read: possibly loud) headphones the experience is that god damn unpleasant that i'd like to make sure it won't happen again.Oh and well, just hitting mute (in gnome, which doesn't have a lot to do with tty1 anyways) won't do the job.

Debian Multimedia :: System Beep Doesnt Work Anymore?

Nov 21, 2010

I have a problem which is a great inconvenience to me. I want to say that I've been searching for the answer for a week and couldn't find anything but problems similar to mine which were unresolved.I used to have debian lenny, but one day i decided to reinstall my operating system and upgraded to sid, so I have a fresh install of debian sid with gnome.
The system beep no longer works on gnome.

What I mean, when i move to terminal(like ctrl+alt+f1) it works great, it also works when i type 'beep' in gnome-terminal. but it doesnt make a sound when i e.g. press ctrl+G, when i am being called on irssi, when i press backspace in gnome-terminal. These things used to work in Lenny, and I really need them (especially this hiliting in irssi). I would go back to Lenny if i didnt need some software that is not present for that version of debian. The pcspkr module is loaded

Fedora :: Annoying Beep When Typing Break Ends On F12 / 13 - Turn This Off?

Sep 1, 2010

I have the typing break enabled through the keyboard preferences, and when the break ends, I hear an alarm beep (sounds like the alarm on a wristwatch) through my speakers.
For the life of me, I cannot figure out how to turn this off.

It did not always do this, but started when I upgraded my system to Fedora 12, and it persisted through to the upgrade to F13.

There are three computers in my office running F13, and mine is the only one that does this. I can find no trace online of anyone else having this problem.

Can anyone tell me how to turn this off?

I'm running Gnome 2.30.0 on Fedora 13 (x86_64)

Ubuntu :: System Beep Won't Stop

I have a HP Laptop with Ubuntu Hardy installed. The system beep makes rapid clicking sound at login window that slowly dissipate and clicking that, so far I can only fix by rebooting, when I play music, reboot after hibernating, and when waking up from suspend. I've turned the system beep off in System/Preferences/Sound but it doesn't do anything.

Ubuntu :: Cursor Move Within Limited Region Via Synergy During Dual Monitor?

Jan 24, 2011

I'm using Mac as a main machine and Ubuntu Netbook as a secondary. Although synergy gives me a good control over Netbook when it works without external monitor, but when I activate VGA monitor, I can only move around the limited region (details are below).

Phenomenon: Cursor can move in the external monitor's screen. No way to move cursor into the netbook's screen via synergy (it's possible from local touchpad/mouse) In the external monitor's screen, curosor moves only within limited region, which I'm guessing is as large as the size of netbook's screen.

Configuration: Use dual screens (uncheck "Same image in all monitors" in the tool "Monitor" on Ubuntu)

Env:
- OS: Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook edition
- HW: Starling Netbook (star3)

Ubuntu :: Karmic Re-enable System Beep

Feb 24, 2010

I like the system beep because I can tell checkgmail to beep when an email comes, that way my speakers don't have to be on.Anyways, I did a fresh install of Karmic the other day. Something is being weird with me when I try to re-enable the beep. Karmic blacklisted pcspkr in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf . Here's what happens:I leave "blacklist pcspkr" in blacklist.conf and restart. I do "sudo modprobe pcspkr" and then "beep", and it beeps. Good.

Then I comment out "blacklist pcspkr" in blacklist.conf and restart. I do "beep". Nothing. I do "sudo modprobe pcspkr" and then "beep". Nothing. I do "lsmod | grep pcspkr". It's listed there as it should be. I check with "sudo grep pcspkr /var/log/dmesg" and find no errors.

Ubuntu :: Stuttering Window Dragging - Drag Windows Around Cursor Shudders And Shakes The Wondows Won't Move Smoothly

Apr 21, 2011

I'm fairly new to ubuntu and I've been messing around with customizing my desktop/UI over the past week or so and I must have messed something up. After I got sick of how slow Wallpapoz was to change backgrounds between workspaces (I'm using GNOME) I turned on the Wallpaper plugin in Compiz and turned off the nautilus desktop. That worked great for the backgrounds but now whenever I try to drag windows around the cursor shudders and shakes and the wondows won't move smoothly. I eventually get them to where I want them to go but it's very annoying.

So far, I have re-enabled the nautilus desktop and reinstalled nautilus with synaptic, neither of which did anything.
