Debian Multimedia :: DVD Playback Broken - Input Plugin Cannot Open

Mar 21, 2010

I am not able to play certain encrypted DVD's under Lenny. Some of these DVD's worked fine in a previous installation (Mandriva 2008.1) in the same laptop (nx6125). I tried with several players (Kaffeine, vlc, mplayer), but nothing works. I know that the DVD drive is OK, since I was a able to watch an unencrypted DVD. I also have libdvdnav4, libdvdread3, libdvdcss2, w32codecs already installed.

This is the error message from Kaffeine:

Debian Multimedia :: VLC Playback Broken By Deb-multimedia Upgrade

Jun 14, 2011

I am using debian squeeze and did an aptitude upgrade yesterday. Today I've found that VLC won't play any video; the files open and the audio plays, but the video is black. The aptitude log is below.

I note that VLC received a security upgrade a few days ago, but my suspicion is that the source of this problem is more likely to be the upgrade of libavcodec52 from version 4:0.5.2.6 -> 5:0.6.1+svn20101128-0.2. I believe this upgrade came from the debian-multimedia stable repo I have enabled.

Does this sound right, and what could I do to fix my VLC playback? This is new territory for me, and I'm slightly surprised that such an upgrade would come from the stable branch of debian-multimedia (although I know this is not an official source).

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Xine DVD (iso) Playback Broken In 10.10?

Mar 23, 2011

I recently updated all my desktop/laptop and MythTV boxes to 10.10 and now Xine freezes if I hit any key or try to exit. No error message or anything, just freezes. It happens on ALL my machines. I can watch the movie fine as long as I don't hit any keys

sample launch:

xine --no-splash -V Xv dvd://mnt/mserv/DVD/ZATOICHI.iso

Everything worked fine in 10.04. I would love to eventually switch to MPlayer, VLC, or something else but I haven't found one that reliable supports menus, chapters, multiple audio tracks, 5.1 surround output, etc. from an ISO file. Why has no one caught up to Xine?

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: XBMC Playback Of DVD Folders Broken After Packman Updates?

I run XBMC 10.1 (packman version) on openSUSE 11.4 x86_64. After a normal package update (zypper up) last weekend, I can't play none of my DVD folders (VIDEO_TS structure) anymore. When selecting a movie to play nothing happens (XBMC log file message "WARNING: could not find codec parameters for /path_to_movie/VIDEO_TS/VIDEO_TS.IFO"). AVIs still play fine. Ubuntu Multimedia :: Pulseaudio Lirc Plugin Broken In 10.04?

May 1, 2010

The only thing I have found so far which does not work for me after upgrading to 10.04 is the ability to change the master volume via LIRC and the pulseaudio lirc plugin.LIRC itself is working, I can verify it recognizes my remote control input by using irw, and all other portions of my lircrc file are executed correctly, such as my On Screen Display. However, no changes are made to the system volume.

I have already reinstalled the lirc pulseaudio plugin to no avail. Can anyone else confirm if this does/doesn't work on their own system?

For the last 3 release all my hardware have been working like a charm. But after upgrading to Lycid I have problems with skype. I fix the camera issues with the following command

LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype

But the sound of my microphone is totally jagged. I have an ICH8 Intel integrated card. I have worked the last 2 years (with an ocasionally glith in the volume) but not having Mic is a real PITAo what can I try to fix it? Please, don't tell me "remove all pulse audio stuff"... It must be another way.

Fedora :: Playback Error Encountered - Missing Plugin

May 25, 2011

I'm completely new to Fedora. I've tried using both Rhythmbox and Exaile to no avail. I keep getting a message that says "Playback error encountered! Your GStreamer installation is missing a plug-in." I have searched all over countless forums and blogs trying to figure out this issue. I went into add/remove software and searched GStreamer and basically checked everything that appeared to be what I needed, but that still hasn't worked. Insanely annoying not being able to play my music and even more annoying because I never had this issue with Ubuntu.

Debian Multimedia :: VLC Video Playback Random Freezing

Jul 17, 2010

When I play videos in VLC, the video output seems to randomly freeze while playing the video. This does not effect the audio though. The audio output continues, but with the video frozen on a frame. This is happening in windowed and full-screen mode. I have to use "pkill vlc" each time twice then start VLC again. I have had to resort to mplayer for the time being. I am running squeeze. I was not experiencing this problem before though (started within the past week), so it must be due to some recent upgrade. I have tried "aptitude purge vlc && aptitude install vlc", but I am still experiencing the same problem.

Debian Multimedia :: Very Slow Samsung Camcorder Video Playback ?

Jul 31, 2011

A relative of mine who uses Debian 6.0.2 has bought a Samsung HMX-H300 Camcorder which records videos in:

1. H.264 (MPEG4 part10/AVC) format

2. High Definition Video (HD-VIDEO)

3. Standard Definition Video.

I notice that the PC requirement for the camcorder's bundled software, apart from the usual Windows XP SP2/Vista/Windows 7, lists an Intel Core Duo 1.66 minimum CPU and an NVIDIA GeForce 8500 or higher or ATI HD 2600 series or higher.

My relative has an old Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 2.30GHz computer which only has an AGP GeForce FX 5200 but after copying the videos from the Memory Card to /home it is just about possible to play them using Totem Movie Player and VLC but, although the audio is OK the video is painfully slow or almost stationary.

Is there a way to view the videos recorded in these formats with this hardware? Can they be converted to another format? Or should he consider buying a better computer?

Fedora :: Japanese Input Broken F11 & F13

Jun 1, 2010

Yesterday my Japanese input on F11x64 broke horribly. I have been using iBus all along, and didn't think I did any upgrades, but maybe there was a restart that picked up something previous. As soon as I hit the key to turn on the input method to type Japanese there would be a python process using 100% cpu, but no keyboard input. After fiddling about reinstalling python, iBus, scim and anthy and anything I else I could think of, I decided to upgrade to F13 to see if it would fix it. (trying to use scim instead of iBus hung the machine during start-up after login (I'm using KDE too if that makes any difference)). I did an upgrade instead of a fresh install fyi...

F13 is no better, and has the same issues with the python process. I have tried reinstalling everything again, as well as trying to avoid scim altogether, and just running iBus and Anthy. (The only other issue that I can think of (that prompted the initial restart) was that my .xsession-errors file in my home directory became huge -> 1.7gb!) Japanese input is crucial to my work (It doesn't even work if the default language of the system is set to Japanese), so hope someone has some ideas on how to resolve this, or even just knowing tha japanese is working for someone on a x64 KDE install would be encouraging...

Debian Multimedia :: Plugin For VLC To Play New H.265 Codec

Feb 19, 2015

Here's a plugin that lets VLC from wheezy-backports play h.265 content. I packaged it for the MEPIS 12 repo, but it should work on wheezy. [URL] ....

Or create your own packages against Debian's stock VLC 2.0.3, that might work.

You need to install the libde265 package first, then the plugin package.

You can use the static ffmpeg binaries from ffmpeg.org to encode to that h.265 (hevc) codec, but it will take quite a while.

Code: Select all./ffmpeg -i [inputfile] -vcodec hevc [outputfile] Try mp4 or mkv for the output file extension.

The good news is that it will create video of the same quality that is half the size of a comparable h.264 file. This is handy for putting movies on space-limited storage, such as on a phone or tablet. I do know that MX Player on Android can play h.265 video.

Debian Multimedia :: No Microphone Recording But Input Does Works In Some Way

Aug 12, 2011

For some time, my microphone input doesn't reach the recording application, but instead goes directly to the loudspeaker. If I make a sound in the microphone, it will go to the loudspeakers, and Audacity or Skype will not "hear" anything (and of course, with this set-up, there's a constant noise in the loudspeaker, coming from the microphone). This problem goes away if I install PulseAudio. So obviously, there's nothing broken with either of ALSA or hardware, only some misconfiguration somewhere, and PulseAudio can make a sense of the mess. Playing with all sorts of configurations in Alsamixer didn't help.

Unfortunately, I don't want PulseAudio, because it causes output problems which are a bit too subtle for me to describe coherently here. So I'd rather fix ALSA than Pulse. Please direct me into how to investigate this. The OS is Debian Unstable, the audio card is an integrated Intel ALC1200.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Change Stereo Mic Input To Mono Input?

Nov 4, 2010

I recently got a real fancy unidirectional microphone, but when I go and use it, something strange happens. The mic is a mono mic, but when I record something, it appears to think it's stereo. Instead of having the same thing on both channels, it puts it all in the left channel, and silence on the right channel.

I tried fiddling with alsamixer. In capture (F4), adjusting the "Capture" device has an effect. However, it doesn't do anything useful. Lowering the right channel to zero does nothing, lowering the left channel to zero creates silence, and disabling the right channel creates silence.

In my System>Preferences>Sound (or pavucontrol, or what-have-you), there are "Analog Stereo Input" and "Analog Stereo Duplex" options there, but no "Analog Mono Input" or "Analog Stereo Output + Analog Mono Input" options (the latter being ideal).

Something interesting, though, if I do this:
Code:
arecord -r 96000 -D pulse -c 1 -vv -V mono /dev/null
it works correctly and outputs on both channels. But if I do
Code:
arecord -r 96000 -D pulse -c 2 -vv -V stereo /dev/null
then it's back to the same behavior. The VU meter on the second command shows the left channel going up and down as I make noise, but the right one always at zero.

The machine does have a crap internal mic built in to the screen bezel. If I do either of the above commands, they both work correctly. The stereo VU shows the same activity for both channels.

The machine is a Eee 1015PED, which has Intel integrated sound. Something probably insignificant is that the mic has a 1/4 inch mono plug, and to get it to plug into the Eee, I needed to get a 1/4 female to 1/8 male adapter. The mic's 1/4 plug is mono (duh) and therefore two-conductor, but the adapter I got is stereo, or three conductor (L, R, GND). I don't know if this is tripping something in hardware to tell it it's stereo or something.

I tried the mic on my desktop, which has a SB Audigy 4 (the non-pro flavor) and that has the "Analog Mono Input" function, so that works fine. Is there some way to turn this stereo input into mono input?
