Is the a way to turn off my external HDD automaticly when I shut down my computer ? Its a HTPC running Ubuntu 10.10, the HDD is a WD 1TB disk in a IcyBox. There is a on/off button, but the HDD is not easy to get to, if you understand. It would be great if I could turn it off. It has been on for a LONG time now...

View 3 Replies View RelatedFew months ago I stood on my netbook running F11 and broke the screen. I don't believe there's anything else wrong with it as the lights and fans act as normal when I turn it on. I hooked it up to a monitor but it doesn't automatically display on the external screen. So I have a pretty odd and possibly quite difficult request. Any step-by-step guide of which buttons to press after turning the machine on, in order to get it to switch to the external display? I just need something along the lines of, press enter, tab, type password, enter, press alt-a, down, down, down, enter, tab, etc. Another possible solution, a very long shot, would be a boot disk that defaults to an external screen?

Now that summer comes closer I will not be home most of the time and I was thinking to use part of my server to upload/download files. well I install the printer, everything works perfectly.....but, when I turn off the PC, and turn it on again, the printer does NOT work!, I send work for being printed but mothing happens , Ubuntu tells me that the job was printed but ... no case, my printer does not print it.
I have to install it again since cero. what can I don to stop install it every time I turn off the computer ?
I work at a local computer shop as a computer technician and we get many computer in daily that require external virus scans (having to take out the hard drives, sticking it in another machine) just to scan (if we're lucky we can sometimes just do it in safe mode).Now what I want to know is...
1. Is it possible to install Ubuntu to an external HDD and use it virtually anywhere I plug it in? Will it pick up the network card, graphics card, etc so I can just plug and go? (Of course there are drivers for some computers).
2. Is it possible to run a Windows oriented virus scanner on Ubuntu? I know I can use WINE to run Windows applications, but will it prove to be compliant with virus scanners as well?
3. The main reason why I want it to be able to pick up on hardware and just work is because I plan on using it for schooling / travelling as well, have all my documents etc saved on it for easy access.
I've used Ubuntu in the past on an old laptop that didn't have much memory, small HDD, and a crap processor but that was 5-6 years ago (I still have the disk they sent me for free ).
I installed Ubuntu on external USB hard drive and while booting I did got option to log into windows XP, Ubuntu. Both operating systems ran fine. i.e. GRUB had overwritten MBR and I was able to dual boot. Main issue: I have installed Ubuntu in external hard-drive so that I can use Linux whenever I want other people who are using same computer can operate on WindowsXP. Sometimes my external hard drive gives problem if there is loose connection and so that oper people using computer do not face any problem I want to disconnect external USB HD whenever I am not using Linux. GRUB menu was pointing to external hardrive so disconnecting it meant my system wont boot!!I rewrote MBR using WindowsXP CD recovery mode. Now I am unable to boot from external USB hard disk( I thought I would be able to if I choose USB hard drive in BIOS option but it did not work it logged into WindowsXP by default).Is there any way I can change WindowsXP boot.ini file so that it also shows Ubuntu in external hard disk? Or is there any way.(I do not want GRUB way as then I would have to keep my external drive connected to log into windows - which I do not want).

It was using an external journal, but in re-installing Slackware I removed the partition holding the external journal, forgetting what it was at the time. I didn't touch the contents of the external hard drive, but now I can't mount it and the various xfs programs seem to demand that it be mounted in order for them to change anything.Anyone have any ideas on how to change an xfs partition from external log to internal? Failing that, how do I get the information off it?

It showed me some message on shell, that it has detected the cdrom(although its dvd rom as well but nevermind) and its of ASUS. But how do i know which dev it was associated with in /dev/? Since i had to test something, i plugged it out, and save the output of ls /dev/ > ~/result.txt
after plugging the dvd-rom, i compared the results and was able to find that it was associated with simple cdrom i.e. /dev/cdrom. I wanted to know that is there any command that will tell me which /dev/ file was associated with external dvdrom? i tried to see in the following result
1) df -h ( no results, just the already mounted partitions)
2) fdisk -l ( same as above)
3) dmesg | tail (shown almost the same result as was shown on shell at the time of plugging the dvd)
After installing ubuntu 9.10 on external HDD I cannot boot vista if external usb is unplugged(where ubuntu is installed). it says grub loading and after that recover grub ( i think that is what is says ... not certain in this moment ) anyway hope you get my dilemma. If you need more information I'll be glad to provide it.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm already aware that you can set automatic login for gdm, which is what i currently have now.
Unfortunately, for some bizarre reason, it doesn't work 100% of the time. I'd say for about every 10 successful auto-logins, I get a case where it just sits at the log-in screen. This is a problem for me because i use it for a specific purpose, and i need Ubuntu to come up as fast as possible, without any user interaction.
So far my only workaround has been to reboot it whenever it does a bad start (where it asks me to log-in) and usually when the PC reboots, it will auto login fine.
I've given up trying to find out why it does that, so i just want the log-in screen gone entirely. I've searched on google and on this site directly, but no one else seems to have this issue.
My LAN internet will not work on my ubuntu computer. I have been told that its because ubuntu downloaded an update that changed my IP adddress from automatic to static. how to change it back and prevent it from happening again?

It's very annoying when you're downloading a file overnight, only to find that the connection has failed 5 min after you went to sleep.Restarting the NetworkManager daemon makes it automatically connect to all configured interfaces, including 3G/GPRS, so I made a simple script to do that.First, we check if the modem is even connected. Replace Huawei with the brand you're using. Any unique word on the line in lsusb will do fine as well. Then we check if the connection is up, and if it is, we simply exit. Otherwise, the NM daemon is restarted, which causes the 3g/gprs to reconnect.

Where the currently active user is lucky, it is not his own name and he can simply switch back to his desktop...Something in fact appears to crash: Programs that were running for the automatically logged-off user are obviously simply killed. When I first boot up Ubuntu all I have to do is select my username, no password required to log in. I want the login screen to prompt me for my password for better security.
Here are the settings I already have:
System - Administration - Login screenSet to "show the screen for choosing who will log in"
System - Administration - Users and GroupsI am the only user I have an Administrator level account "Don't ask for password on login" is unchecked, i.e. it should ask for my password on login. If I create a new user with the same settings, that user gets asked for its password. But I don't.

I installed Ubuntu on a machine of our laboratory. Since we are at the university connections may pass through a proxy (whose url we ignore). All things concerning system update are nearly unusable. Several posts say to add in apt strings like $ export http_proxy="http:" $ export ftp_proxy="http:" but I don't know the url proxy at all.Firefox is set to "Direct internet connection" and all work well. In Windows all connection properties were set to "automatic" and updates were ok.Is there a way to have an automatic recognition by apt?

The main reason for this is because i havent got a monitor connected if for whatever reason the server restarts its hanging at the login screen and i cant login via vnc to the desktop.
