Mar 16, 2010I had a Compiz update two weeks ago, this update came from the official repository of Debian. So everyone had this update, this update did not had a positive effect. The extra plugins on both my desktop and laptop can't be enabled now. Such as Expo or the Animations. I can just use the basic stuff. There have been some partial upgrades ever since for Compiz, so I guess they are still working on it. But my question is; am I the only one?

May 22, 2010I am aware of the multitude of firefox addons there are, but they are not really what I am looking for. I am also aware that I can just recover the temp files from my hard drive, that is not what I am looking for either. I was wondering if you guys knew of any actual software for linux that does the job, something like orbit downloader. The reason being is that orbit allowed multiple http connections at once, making for much faster downloads, much more efficient on system resources that browser addons. It was also in a neat little menu.

I just switched to debian from ubuntu in search of something different and I want to find a system that works for me before I settle down.
I DO NOT HAVE A SECONDARY OS
just two problems I have with debian:
No sound
Error message: No volume control GStreamer plugins and/or devices found.
When I try to open sound from the speaker icon at top right.
I think it's a driver issue but Its not as easy as ubuntu was lspci:
My trackpad also does not work so I have to open documents manually if I don't bring my mouse to class.

Feb 9, 2010I have recently switched from Banshee to Songbird, and am loving it. Especially now that there is a ppa for it, which I just discovered. However, i have tried to download an addon and a theme, and apparently it just told me to restart after installing, but it doesn't show up when I go to View>Feathers. It just shows the default theme, Gonzo. Has anyone had this problem, or knows how to fix it?

Dec 17, 2010I am relatively new to ubuntu and have all sorts of problems. First of all, none of my depositories work, but I'm fine with this. I think it is due to my uni wireless connection, as I haven't been able to update any linux distro here. That's the reason why I couldn't fetch the MPEG 1 Layer 3 (MP3) plugin that Rhythmbox offers me to download. So I looked for alternatives.
I installed some restricted extras package from the official ubuntu databases, but it was only 6 KB (should it be that tiny?) and when I tried again, it still wasn't working.

Firefox is getting confused over my plugins. about:plugins show an empty list but the plugins tab of the Add-On Manager show them all and says they are enabled.It was working a week ago without any issues whatsoever. I have them in the ~/.gnome2/rhythmbox/plugins directory and I have restarted rhythmbox and tried to open it from the console. I get no errors or any other indication that there are any problems. Now I don't know as I'll want to encode to AAC (I primarily plan to rip to .wav for burning compilation CDs), but I figure I might as well grab it, for completeness . I noticed, on Google'ing for info on that package, comments that seem to indicate its functionality has been replaced by gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad. So, do I still "need" gstreamer0.10-plugins-really-bad?

Mar 28, 2010Up until recently I have had no problem playing all kinds of video in Ubuntu. I recently upgraded to Lucid and I can't remember if I was able to play videos after that, but yesterday I found that I am unable to play flv or MP4 videos in either totem or vlc. Converting them to ogv using ffmpeg allows them to play just fine, and I can edit the flv and mp4 in Avidemux, so there is nothing wrong with the files themselves. Not sure what I've done, can't seem to find a bug in launchpad for this, so I am assuming it is a problem with my setup somehow.

Aug 18, 2011I'm sure this is a painfully naive question, but I don't suppose it can possibly lower my reputationFor Good Reasons,use a custom build of the audio editor audacity rather than the version in the openSUSErepositories. What I can't seem to figure out is how to get it to find and load the LADSPA signal processing plug-ins. I have the regulation ladspa libraries (1.13-6.2) from the Oss repository installed. The files reside at /usr/lib64/ladspa . audacity is built with ladpsa support enabled, and indeed reports that it is enabled if I look at the Effects tab under preferences. I have even entered the ladspa library path in a "ladspa.conf" file under /etc/ld/so.conf.d, which may or may not help. Regardless, I don't seem to see the ladpsa effects listed when I run audacity

In Linux you can easily choose Secret Rabbit in SRC_SINC_BEST_QUALITY mode as your system-wide sample rate converter by adding a single line to either /etc/asound.conf or ~/.asoundrc (requires libasound2-plugins and libsamplerate0 to be installed):

I have both of those packages installed, but for some reason the file asound.conf and .asoundrc are not there so I cannot add the line.

Apr 29, 2010I have installed RipperX and the Lame MP3 encoder, as well as Oggenc. I noticed that Ripperx plugins are loaded at boot. The thing which concerns me is that there are multiple instances of a plugin witht the same name showing in system monitor( or ps command). There are about 15 processes alone with the name "plugin-Lame."

Are these actually different? Or do I really have redundant instances running? I'm concerned because I have an old system with limited RAM, and all the plugins together make an impact. If they are all neccessary and needed for RipperX, is there a way to have them load up when RipperX is started, rather than at boot-time?
Debian :: Video Clips Not Playing - Plugins Required?
Jun 20, 2010After using Ubuntu for about 18 months (and trying out a few others) I have started to use Debian (Lenny) more and more. I like the fact that it's supposed to be a very powerful and stable distro. When I tried to view a couple of video clips from a website it just won't play, though. Other distros play 'out of the box' but perhaps I need some pointing in the right direction from the more experienced Debian user! I installed MPlayer but that hasn't made any difference. I also downloaded Flash for Linux, which installed without problems. What I need to do? Plug-ins required etc?

Sep 24, 2010I just two days ago updated lenny, then unplugged my monitor which raised my video card out of my open system board. This made my debian com freeze and i had to restart. The sound icon looks like its muted or has an X next to it. It says 'No volume control GStreamer plugins and/or devices found.' I tried looking through forums but havent found any solutions yet. I think alsa is installed. I ran alsaconf. It said no sound cards were loaded when unloading them. Then the following cards are found on your system:
hda-intel ATI Technologies Inc SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA)
hda-intel ATI Technologies Inc Radeon HD 3870 Audio device
legacy Probe legacy ISA (non-PnP) chips
I tried the first two, it says OK, sound driver is configured ALSA CONFIGURATOR will prepare the card for playing now. I'll run alsasound init script, then use amixer.
I then installed libesd-alsa0, replacing libesd0 or something. If I do # alsamixer, then it says alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or directory
Then i tried this
# cat /proc/asound/cards
cat: /proc/asound/cards: No such file or directory
then # cat /proc/asound/modules
cat: /proc/asound/modules: No such file or directory

Did I break the onboard sound card when pulling out the video cord? I was pretty gentle, I just made it slide out i think. I've also restarted a bunch of times. It seems like alsaconf showed some sound cards. Maybe some driver is not installed, but I think I did install a newer gstreamer or part of it.
