I am using Debian 5 . when I want to play some flv. mp3 etc file in totem player it says plugins are not installed .
how to install them in easy way .
why are they not installed out of box

For example, let's say i have 3 avi files, 1.avi, 2.avi, 3.avi. I want to be able to figure out what each of them contains for video and audio tracks.
I know ffmpeg -i will show me what I want, but how do i incorporate it to do an entire directory.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI was using THIS guide to install restricted multimedia codecs. I got to the part where I had to switch system packages to the Packman packages. It came up with a number of dependency errors. I then had a stupid moment and told it to ignore the dependencies and break the applications. Now Xine won't even start, and Amarok seems to have disappeared on my computer. Oh and I also got a bunch of weird dependency problems when I was trying to install some of the packages from Packman too as listed on the guide. I also told it to ignore them when it couldn't find the dependencies. I'm scared I fudged multimedia up so badly I would have to do a clean install to get it back. BTW, I'm running openSUSE 11.2. I don't know if there are other specifications that matter.

I have installed the win32codecs at least ten times now (both from the repositories and from the codecs-kde.ymp one-click install) and still no joy. View 4 Replies View RelatedI have an mkv file that I'm trying to player with mplayer, but no video is showing up. Mplayer was installed using apt-get install mplayer since ./configure when I try to build mplayer gives me a bunch of garbage:

But, after installing mplayer using apt-get, I can't get any video for the file I'm trying to play. I've tried copying the files from "all-20110131.tar.bz2" to /usr/local/lib/codecs but I still don't even get a box for video. Everything works fine using the built in movie player--even the subtitles are shown correctly.
I tried to use Rythmbox to listen to some radio erlier today when I found out that only ogg streams are working for me. I know the links are working and the mms streams aren't down cuz I use the same radio stations in windows. So, what codecs or whatever do I need to solve this problem? Or doesnt linux support multimedia streams?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI had a Compiz update two weeks ago, this update came from the official repository of Debian. So everyone had this update, this update did not had a positive effect. The extra plugins on both my desktop and laptop can't be enabled now. Such as Expo or the Animations. I can just use the basic stuff. There have been some partial upgrades ever since for Compiz, so I guess they are still working on it. But my question is; am I the only one?

I just switched to debian from ubuntu in search of something different and I want to find a system that works for me before I settle down.
I DO NOT HAVE A SECONDARY OS
just two problems I have with debian:
No sound
Error message: No volume control GStreamer plugins and/or devices found.
When I try to open sound from the speaker icon at top right.
I think it's a driver issue but Its not as easy as ubuntu was lspci:
My trackpad also does not work so I have to open documents manually if I don't bring my mouse to class.
I have FC10! so far i have downloaded the mplayer and its codecs.further i extracted both the packages( in DOWNLOAD folder).but I'm not able to extract the codecs in the /usr/local/lib/codecs directory.it says you do not have permission. how should i know whether to compile the mplayer or is it pre-compiled?
View 10 Replies View RelatedI'm using 32 bit (i686) Debian Lenny. The multimedia repo is installed, w32codecs is installed, VLC and Kaffeine are both installed. I was trying to listen to some audio files on the NPR site (link will follow) and find that I can't open the files with anything I have installed. The Linux version of the Realplayer isn't in the repo (and I don't really want to install it after some of the things I've read about it) but I gotta have my NPR and there's no way I'll EVER go back to a M$ OS. How can I listen to these files without downloading them and then uploading them to a media conversion site? I'm usually very good with google but this one has me stumped.
