Is it legal to use restricted software/formats/plugins? I read a lot, but I was not able to find an answer.I'm talking about usage of mp3, flash, nvidia drivers, gstream plug-ins.I read that it depends on the country, but I couldn't find the list of countries where is it legal where not.(im from Lithuania)

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am new to ubuntu and would like to play my music library via a program. Was going to just try rhythmbox since it came with the OS, unless someone has another suggestion. When trying to play my mp3s I get a error saying I need to download a plugin which it can't find. I found this link and tried to follow it. [URL]..I was able to install the package on my laptop, but one my desk top when I click on 'Click here to install the ubuntu-restricted-extras package' I get prompted to use 'apturl' which I accept then it says Could not find package 'ubuntu-restricted-extras'.I am connected to my network, shouldn't it just reach out to and grab this?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI can play WMAs with MPlayer but when I try to skip forward a few minutes it plays for a split second, and then plays at another random part of the video making it impossible to play a WMA from anywhere but the beginning.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI tried to install them through the software center first. It would show "in progress" on the left hand side for a couple seconds and then it would go away, but the formats did not install. next I found a command to copy and paste, but it didn't work either

edit: it appears that this problem applies to more than just the restricted formats... I just tried to download chess and it didn't work either. the window flickered for a second after the "in progress" went away, then nothing happened.
I have just installed ubuntu 10.04. How do I install encoders for window audio media files? I had them installed on 9.04 but that was over a year ago. I seem to have forgoten.*
View 5 Replies View RelatedThe music I ripped with Sound Juicer, or ripped with VLC and tagged with EasyTag both have the same tag issues. The tags work great system-wide in Ubuntu, and if I drop the song on a data CD and put it in my Pioneer stereo, the tags work there, too. I can put the song on my Walkman and then copy it to another Ubuntu machine, and the tags work on the second machine, as well.
However, the Walkman lists the song as Unknown Song, Unknown Artist, Unknown Album. Further, if I transport the file into Windows, the Windows system doesn't recognize the tags, either.This begs the question, are there multiple tag formats?
I have a Firefox addon called Download Helper that lets me download many of the videos I see on the internet. Sometimes, I run into something I can't. I'd like to know exactly how to download these files: [URL]. It seems they are encoded with their own player, but mousing over them also brings up Adobe Flash Player 10.0. Download helper normally gets this stuff. Is there a Firefox extension or a program that would let me capture these videos? Or, for that matter, one that could succinctly tell me upon mousing over a video exactly what kind of file it is?
View 1 Replies View RelatedHere's a question for audio compression nerds. I currently store music ripped form CD's in FLAC format on my HD. I would like to store them as OGG files to save space.
My quandry is this; I need to create both MP3 and OGG files. Both formats are "lossy". I imagine that each format must have different ways of deciding what to lose. Therefore, I am losing some stuff when I rip it in the first place, and converting would lose additional (and dfferent) stuff.
To give you an idea about what sounds okay to me, I believe I can tell the difference between 128 Kbps and 192, but not 192 and 256.
Am I being like the guy who waxes his headlisghts to increase gas mileage here?
I'm thinking about sticking my DVDs and audio CDs onto my computer. I will need to convert/transcode them into smaller file formats but I'm confused about all the available containers/codecs/formats etc.What types are "free"? Just Ogg or are there others? View 6 Replies View RelatedI was using THIS guide to install restricted multimedia codecs. I got to the part where I had to switch system packages to the Packman packages. It came up with a number of dependency errors. I then had a stupid moment and told it to ignore the dependencies and break the applications. Now Xine won't even start, and Amarok seems to have disappeared on my computer. Oh and I also got a bunch of weird dependency problems when I was trying to install some of the packages from Packman too as listed on the guide. I also told it to ignore them when it couldn't find the dependencies. I'm scared I fudged multimedia up so badly I would have to do a clean install to get it back. BTW, I'm running openSUSE 11.2. I don't know if there are other specifications that matter.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI think that the biggest problem that I have had is that some of the music (and audio books) that I have gotten have not played on my walkman, or have not been able to be downloaded in to I-tunes.
First: I hate itunes... I only try to make it work because I love my wife. (and do not want her to hit me)
Second: I know that my Walkman has a very limited range of files that it can play, so I will need to convert some types of files.
But my basic questions:
* How can I figure out what format a file is in?
* Below that, how can I identify the singular characteristics of a file? (bit rate, and other formats...)
* Is there a best way to switch the formats or format options of these files. (I am currently using sox to do this, it seems to very complete)
Basically. I know nothing! The most that I do not know is that two files that as far as I can tell have the same formats, and should work the same never the less, one of them works, the other does not. I am looking to figure out a way to look at these files (maybe they are mislabeled) and figure out what their real format is (and a more complete format than just being MP3 or such) and then to be able to convert it in to a format that is able to be used by myself and/or my wife.
I would like to ask if there is any video editing program that can save to uncompressed file formats.

I then installed Open Shot, Lame and Restricted extras and now when I try to open a video (WMV, AVI, FLV etc) all I get is a prompt to search for suitable Plugin. When I click on search another prompt tells me No packages with the requested plugins were found followed by the name of the requested plugin.ie DivX MPEG-4 Version 5 decoder or Windows Media Video 9 decoder etc.Anybody any ideas how to sort this. I already reinstalled 11.04 from scratch as I had the same problem yesterday. I never had an issue like this before and been using Ubuntu for years.

Today I installed the following package:ubuntu-restricted-extrasThis was so I could rip CDs to MP3s. This worked, however it seems to have also had the side effect of preventing Rhythmbox from retrieving information about audio CDs. If I run Rhythmbox from a shell I get the following debug:

I just installed F15 new, and I wonder what packages do I need to install to play movies with restricted codecs? I thought I have everything what I installed last time with F14 but I can't play my movies in Kaffeine. I have rmpfusion and the packages gstreamer-plugins-bad-free gstreamer-ffmpeg gstreamer-plugins-bad gstreamer-plugins-ugly, and all other gstreamer-* packages.

I managed to install the required files for multimedia formats and everything works fine. The system has updated as updates have been released via the evaluation update code quite happily. I liked it and decided to get a sled11 license and install on my main workstation. About a month has passed since the test install and my fresh licensed install and I accepted all the updates on install. When I install the multimedia apps, only kaffeine will read multimedia dvds. Nautilus, brasero and totem say it is a restricted format and refuse to read it. What to look for?

Another differerence that I have noticed is: when I was listening a MP3 file using Amarok the music was quite clear and loud, but when I reproduce a MP4 or MP3 video file using VLC I could bearily hear something and the volume was at its maximum. How can it be ?
I am relatively new to ubuntu and have all sorts of problems. First of all, none of my depositories work, but I'm fine with this. I think it is due to my uni wireless connection, as I haven't been able to update any linux distro here. That's the reason why I couldn't fetch the MPEG 1 Layer 3 (MP3) plugin that Rhythmbox offers me to download. So I looked for alternatives.
I installed some restricted extras package from the official ubuntu databases, but it was only 6 KB (should it be that tiny?) and when I tried again, it still wasn't working.
