Debian Multimedia :: Changing The Icons Doesn't Affect The Gnome Panel
Apr 4, 2011
If I try to change the icon style, it changes the icons in my desktop and in Nautilus, but it doesn't change the icons in the panels nor the ones in the menus.

I was trying to make my surround sound work and screwed things up. Anyways, one of them is the one with the vertical slider and the other one is the one with the horizontal slider. I want to get rid of the one with the vertical slider. How do I do this? (The one with the vertical slider is in the part where the "tray-ed" programs go). When I use my keyboard volume up and volume down buttons, I notice that the two controls respond APPROXIMATELY the same where one is slightly ahead of the other. If more information is needed, just ask.

I want to give some of my directories special folder icons. For example, I have a Projects directory and I noticed that there is a special 'projects' directory icon available in my icon theme; I think that it would be nice to use that icon instead of the default directory icon.Google informs me that the file ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs can be edited to give certain directories special properties, including special icons. However, all my changes to the file get reverted after restarting my computer. Is there a way to make changes to user-dirs.dirs permanent?

Both Gnome and Gnome-Classic desktops become extremely unmanagebale for me in jessie stable. So I installed xfce desktop in jessie stable. Is there a way to add icons like /usr/bin/skype ]usr/sbin/synaptic.(those nor shown in Add New Icons) in the lower panel which I have extended through the whole desktop? This could easily be done both in gnome and gnome-classic desktops till wheezy.

I'm using squeeze and the xserver-xorg-core, kdebase and kdm packages with their dependencies in addition to the base system installation. I get glitches when I try to drag the icons on the panel: I can't move them properly and occasionally the whole screen gets redrawn (by this I mean it goes black and gets back several seconds later.) and gives an error with signal 11 (segmentation fault). The problem is not specific to my user account, because I tried it with a newly created user, and I didn't do any configuration on mine either. I also experienced other glitches, about which I made some screenshots: [URL]

I use Debian Jessie which includes a gnome shell version 3.14.1. The problem is that icons of some applications such as Viber or Starcal are not shown in the tray while the icons of other applications (e.g. Skype of Dropbox) are shown without problem.
By the way, the problem does not relate to loading, because all applications are loaded and a space is considered for each in the tray, but the problem is that for some of applications the pictures of their icons are not shown.

Say I set a background color or custom image to a panel. The notification icons (sound, net activity, clock, etc) and a few other icons (trash, desktop) appear to retain the default background. Looks kind of funky. Any way I can make these icons conform to my custom background?

I'm having an issue with Gnome panel, the window list applet isn't resizing to accomodate more windows. I have my panel situated so that the window list applet is on the top left and the menu list applet is in the top right. Instead resizing to be smaller in order to accomodate more windows, the window list applet pushes the menu list applet under it and continues to the right. I recently upgraded to lenny and with I'm assuming Gnome panel 2.20.3. I didn't have this issue before the upgrade. I've looked through and tried the options in the preferences and also a little bit in th config editor but with no luck.

This seems like it has happened to me on every installation of Gnome that I have doneght be an exaggeration, but not by much). On the top Gnome panel the icons on the right side seem to move around. For example, after installation the Logout button will be the button that is on the far right. Then after reboot, it will be the Volume icon, then after another reboot it might be Network icon

I have been using Ubuntu without any problem for 2 years. Yesterday, when I booted Ubuntu, its power management is not working at start up: icons for battery, speaker, wireless not there + light icon says "cannot connect to gnome-power-manager".( in the screenshot) When I go System - Preferences - Power Management (1), it corrects only the light icon.I could only bring back wireless icon by "nm-applet" after doing (1).But other icons are not there still.

Sometimes I get this ugly grey square in the system tray area of my panel. [URL] I'm guessing it belongs to an item that isn't there, but if I start an additionnal tray program, the new app doesn't take this place, instead it adds itself to the left of the tray. And it doesn't belong to a program that I used and closed, since it's there after a fresh boot.

Recently updated to 10.10 Wondering if it's possible to change the start icon on the gnome panel? In the past I have been able to accomplish this by navigating to the theme's icon folder (usr/share/icons), replacing it with my new icon, updating the cache and restarting gnome. That method doesn't seem to be working however.

I have a theme that looks like this.
Unfortunately, it makes the globalmenu and clock applets disappear on my gnome-panel. My panel is set to system theme, though when I choose a solid color I can get the hidden text to show up. I want to preserve the system color so I need to change the text color somehow. Also, I don't know why it uses that bluish color when clicked on since I never defined such a color in the appearance settings.

Surviving without mouse or touchpad I have been looking for this without initial success: only 2 oldie questions like the one I was going to place:
[URL]... But I found it!!: [URL]...
So the key keyboard shortcut is:
CTRL+ALT+TAB
With it you change the focus from the desktop to the panel, and vice versa When the focus in in the panel you can move from icon to icon with TAB (to the right) or SHIFT+TAB (to the left). Then Enter key (sometimes F10 instead) makes the same as left-clicking with the mouse, and SHIFT+F10 makes the same as right-clicking with the mouse. ESC key (sometimes Enter instead) takes the menus out.
There is something about this in: [URL]...

I have a suspicion that this is easily fixed, however a good google (and this forum) hammering having turned up the fix. So I probably have the wrong search criteria, My Gnome Applet for switching CPU Frequency Scaling has 'disappeared' and is not listed in the the Add to Panel.. list of applets.

After a recent Debian 8 update, I notice a new problem with the Gnome-Terminal. When you open a new tab or window, whatever is the cwd of the current tab becomes the cwd of the new tab or window. This always used to reset to ~, which is what I want. Is this a new "feature" and if I can disable it?
