When I use gnome (3), I find I have hundreds of strange icons in my dash, in addition to the applications that are actually there, which don't seem to actually do anything...
I'm using debian jessie, gnome version 3.14.

Here's the deal: I'm in the backwoods with this mini-laptop and I'd like to do some composing with it. I don't have much internet here so I can't start googling around or download hundreds of MB's of packages. Anyone able to recommend me a good, lightweight midi notation software?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI use Debian Jessie which includes a gnome shell version 3.14.1. The problem is that icons of some applications such as Viber or Starcal are not shown in the tray while the icons of other applications (e.g. Skype of Dropbox) are shown without problem.
By the way, the problem does not relate to loading, because all applications are loaded and a space is considered for each in the tray, but the problem is that for some of applications the pictures of their icons are not shown.
I have Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Linux and i Love both KDE and Gnome but how can i stop there apps from conflicting?
View 1 Replies View RelatedIf I try to change the icon style, it changes the icons in my desktop and in Nautilus, but it doesn't change the icons in the panels nor the ones in the menus.

I've just upgraded to 11.04 and really like it so far, everything seems to be running smoothly and I had no issues apart from a broken Emerald which I removed (and installed compiz-gnome and then made gtk-window-decorator the default, which fixed Unity segfaulting on Emerald).
My problem now is that when I use the Unity dash to search for something, it takes a while to search and then finds nothing. I'm pretty sure I should have things like "text editor", "gimp", "update manager", so I would think this is some manner of bug.
In addition to that, the following buttons don't do anything if I click on them:
- Media Apps
- Internet Apps
- More Apps
- Find Files

View 3 Replies View RelatedIn Fedora 14 I used to have some links to often used folders in the top panel, and now I would like to have some shortcuts in the Gnome 3 dash. I tried adding a custom launcher to the applications menu using alacarte, but it doesn't show up there. There is, however, an entry in alacarte-made.desktop. Is there any way to accomplish this?

My problem, however, is that on the current version of GNOME that I am running in Squeeze, when I click on "Appearances", there is no "Interface" tab! What do I do about this? Certain icons are missing because of this.
I'm relatively new to Ubuntu and am just trying to get basic functionality without having to punt back to Windows applications on Wine (such as Irfanview).All I want to do is step through photos (by pressing a key, such as the space bar) to view & then press a keyclick to move the good ones to a separate folder.
This is so fundamental that I must assume there must be software in Ubuntu which can accomplish those two simple tasks (step through a folder and move a file to another folder). Yet, I have The Gimp, GNU Paint, Krita, KSnapshot, XFig, XPaint, etc., and none of them appear to have this basic functionality (which Irfanview has, but on Windows).
What program can view and easily MOVE the photo to a stated directory in a single keystroke? Note: All the programs can "open a file" and "save as" but this is NOT the desired fundamental operation. The fundamental operation is:
- Press a key (spacebar would be nice) to scroll to the next photo in a folder.
- Press another key combination ("control + m" would be nice) to move the photo to a stated folder
- The "index" should NOT be reset (that is, the next spacebar should show the next photograph in the folder, not jump back, perhaps hundreds of photos, to the first photo as The Gimp does, for example, after a save).
- It's ok to set the move-to folder the first time, but it should not ask each and every time which folder as it should be the default for the move command after the first move.
Note: I also tried making the icons in the Nautilus browser huge and then control-click selecting the good ones, but that makes ALL icons at all times huge, and the scroll in Nautilus is atrocious, so, in effect, that was a failure. I need a graphic program that performs this simple task. This is so fundamental of a need (to scroll through and move just the good photos to a stated folder) that I find it hard to believe I can't (yet) find a graphics display program capable of scrolling and moving photos.
I have just installed squeeze 6.0.2 amd64 and noticed when I use k3b to burn/verify a disc, when it has finished burning the media it plays a sound, and rather sound is played which sounds very crackly/muffled.I do not remember this on ubuntu, and I cannot say for sure but I dont recall this happening on squeeze 6.0.1.
Sound plays perfectly in all other applications, no problems whatsoever.This is not a big deal, I just dont remember this happening. I know this isnt the most detailed posting but does anyone have any idea what this could be? I even tried to reinstall k3b through synaptics and the problem still persists.
I've recently hooked up my pc to my very old TV-set and I've managed to get TV-out (S-video) working fairly quickly.BUT, I'm having a weird issue. The picture on the TV-set is distorted with 'white-lines' running through it horizontally.Its difficult to describe, but it looks a little like a sheet of writing-paper splashed across the screen... I've searched around and haven't found a solution yet. The weird thing is, that running windows, I get no such display corruption.I'm using the very latest xf-video-ati driver atop a r300 (radeon 9600) card. View 9 Replies View RelatedMy mouse cursor has acquired some strange background image showing what looks to be paragraphs of chinese glyphs (they are too small to make out clearly). This background image is contained in rougly a 1 inch square with the mouse cursor hot spot in the upper left-hand corner. The mouse cursor is visible, but whatever is under those glyphs is covered.
I've tried the mouse configuration gui -- but it says nothing of background images for the mouse. I've also deleted and recreated my xconfig.org file to see if that somehow got mangled. I've been searching the web for a couple of hours, but cant seem to find anything related to my problem.
I was trying to make my surround sound work and screwed things up. Anyways, one of them is the one with the vertical slider and the other one is the one with the horizontal slider. I want to get rid of the one with the vertical slider. How do I do this? (The one with the vertical slider is in the part where the "tray-ed" programs go). When I use my keyboard volume up and volume down buttons, I notice that the two controls respond APPROXIMATELY the same where one is slightly ahead of the other. If more information is needed, just ask.

I don't know how I did it, and I cannot seem to find the way to undo it I would like full descriptions under the icons in my menus. I tried System -> Preferences -> Appearance but could not find what I was looking for. I also tried System -> Preferences -> File Management. Neither seems to help me out. This is not an urgent problem, but an annoying one.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've noticed that when I open firefox I get really strange HTTP and HTTPS connections showing up in firestarter (which as I understand it is just a GUI for IPtables). They connect to various bits of a site listed as 1e100.net (when you use "lookup hostnames") such as wy-in-f18.1e100.net, they stay connected all the time as far as I can see unless I close firefox. I've heard people say they are connected to Google, but I can close all tabs after loging out of google and still see them... it's very odd.

Nearly evrithing was flawless, but when i copied my old home directory the images of some of the launchers i have on the desktop are invisible.I use kde 4 with the activity show folder running pointing to the desktop folder. The icons missing are windows programs installed with wine. I copied the icons from one installation to another. I also tried to manually set the icon copying it to a different location and modifying de .desktop.

I started to install both OpenBox and FBPanel in Debian, and the menu don't have any icons on it.
Simply I'm not going to reconfigure everything in both distro, I copied fbpanel configuration folder to my Ubuntu home.
Then I install FBPanel in Ubuntu it have icons within the menus.

I've googled around without any luck about this problem. It's minor and everything else works okay, but still this shouldn't be happen. Since I see the screenshots of FBPanel in Debian they all have icons on it. Tried changing the icon theme, nothing works. If it's because FBPanel can't find any icon, then the launcher shouldn't have any icons right? Also, I use the exact same configuration on both.
Is it because Debian uses different version of FBPanel? Haven't checked both version tho.
Both Gnome and Gnome-Classic desktops become extremely unmanagebale for me in jessie stable.So I installed xfce desktop in jessie stable. Is there a way to add icons like /usr/bin/skype ]usr/sbin/synaptic.(those nor shown in Add New Icons) in the lower panel which I have extended through the whole desktop?This could easily be done both in gnome and gnome-classic desktops till wheezy.

I have a strange problem, icons are not showing up correctly in various places, attaching some screens to better show the problem.
Anything I open that has a notification icon, just appears exactly the same, as you can see in one of the screens even hovering over certain things brings up that same icon...
Edit: After some searching I see it's an nvidia bug...
I just installed cairo (may i say is the greatest ever?) but there is a gmenu there that when i click on it the icons for the menu wont work, there is a setting for configuring ths applet that lets me enable and disable the icons for it and i have it on enable..
I have also notice that i got no icons for the system menu i the gnome panel, is this related?
