I've noticed strange behavior of gnome-panel. After every log in it disappear - it's not killed, it's working but seems like completely transparent so i have to touch it twice to get it back. It's 2.30.2 ver of panel.
View 2 RepliesI installed a fresh new Jessie (8.1) with the Cinnamon environment a few days a go, and yesterday I started seeing a strange issue seemingly happening at random.
I'm not sure what I do to cause this, but every few hours all the text and some of the icons (launcher, notifications and some applications) on the panel disappear. Most icons in the menu also vanish.
I've just noticed that some windows also disappear, but instead of showing the window behind them, I see my background image (see attached image).
I can't interact with windows which I can't see, but I can move and resize them (they have no border to grab, but alt+middle mouse works).
I can get around the issue by restarting Cinnamon (Alt+F2, r), but that works only part of the time.
Dmesg shows nothing (most recent message was plugging in my mouse & keyboard).
I'm running this on a Lenovo X201 (which uses Intel HD graphics QM57) and an external monitor (dual monitor configuration)...
This problem showed after fresh installation of Debian Testing (image is dated at 1 march 2010). When I want remove cd I click button on device but the icon is still at the desktop and in the nautilus too (in the left sidebar). I have to remove it manualy from nautilus or desktop ( option: eject ). This problem shows with packages like gnome-mount or gnome-volume-manager ot without them.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI've noticed that my upper gnome panel and Docky will disappear randomly. I've deleted the lower panel. The last time the panel and Docky did this, I was using Rhythmbox and Google Chrome. Tooltips will still show on Docky and the panel, and I can still select things; however, the buttons are invisible. Is there a way to prevent this from happening?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm having an issue with Gnome panel, the window list applet isn't resizing to accomodate more windows. I have my panel situated so that the window list applet is on the top left and the menu list applet is in the top right. Instead resizing to be smaller in order to accomodate more windows, the window list applet pushes the menu list applet under it and continues to the right. I recently upgraded to lenny and with I'm assuming Gnome panel 2.20.3. I didn't have this issue before the upgrade. I've looked through and tried the options in the preferences and also a little bit in th config editor but with no luck.

Everytime I boot debian my partitions are not shown in Nautilus and gnome-panel:While nautilus is this way, if I plug USB drives it doesn't run automount.If I execute the command "nautilus -q" and restart the gnome panel, the partitions are shown and the usb automount start to work,if I add "nautilus -q" toartup automatically my desktop gets deactivated.Image after "nautilus -q" and "killall gnome-panel"Does anyone know how to fix it, and make the partitions and the usb automount work correctly

[URL] I'm guessing it belongs to an item that isn't there, but if I start an additionnal tray program, the new app doesn't take this place, instead it adds itself to the left of the tray. And it doesn't belong to a program that I used and closed, since it's there after a fresh boot.

Sound system is work(good work) in:Ubuntu 9.10,Suse 11 and Windows But in Debian i have a starange problem:periodic sound is disappear(simply so or when i'm switch differents video files). It's not a problem with video players. /etc/init.d/alsa-utils restart(stop|start) not help. Remain only restart all system, but it's not always help.Sometime it's help only 3 or 5 restart time. Mother board audio card is disabled(in BIOS). Detailed about strangeness:

I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS 32Bit on my Dell Inspiron B130 Laptop, and it works great, way faster then windows XP which was pre-installed on the machine. Everything worked out of the box except for the Wireless but after some reading I was able to get it to work by plugging it in to the wired connection. but anyway the problem I'm having is that it seems like after a few days of use ubuntu starts to act up, things become out of place and not work. this even happens with Linux Mint also. By acting up I mean, Icons start to disappear in the panel, my wireless connection starts to stop working and the only way to keep it on is to either log off and try to log in using KDE instead of GNOME. or open terminal and do the command nm-appt or something someone on the chat told me to do to try and get my wireless icon working.
View 3 Replies View RelatedRandomly, when I start up my computer, the top panel will have some icons missing, or an icon will be covered up by part of another.Example: Note that half of the battery icon is shown where the network manager applet should be. Here is what it is supposed to look like:
This happens very randomly. As you can see by the times, both of those were taken on the same day. I logged out and logged back in, and it look fine.
I need the steps to troubleshoot this:
If I:
1. Add drawer(s) on the gnome panel
2. add items to one or more of those drawers
3. reboot then:
1. all empty drawers can operate normally
2. drawers that have stuff in it cannot be opened.
Ubuntu 10.04 Gnome: I have about 5 PCs at home, and all of them have this problem.
The default ubuntu install places top panel icons in the following order:

The power button completely scrolls off the edge, and half of the user-id scrolls off as well, to look like this:

I am using ubuntu 10.4, network icon to manage wireless disappear suddenly.Wireless is working fine. I just don't see network-manager icon.I tried:Right click on pannel and try to add Network Manager. But there is no network manager.I also try, $killall $nm-applet, then $nm-applet --sm-disable.

I tried xfce4-XfApplet-plugin but it doesn't work the way I would like to.
Fresh Squeeze install: I have AWN running and right now I have used gconf-editor to stop gnome-panel from being a part of the Gnome Sessions. I think it was in Desktop -> Sessions -> Default Settings..or something like that. Before I did this I was just clearing out the entries for the top panel, using Apps -> Panel -> and then it was top_panel or something like that. I'm at work so I cannot fully verify, after I deleted the bottom panel. This still allowed me to use ALT + F2 to bring up the run prompt.
Since removing gnome-panel from the session, I cannot use ALT + F2 anymore. If I were to put gnome-panel back, is there a way to keep the panels from recreating themselves after I remove them from within gconf-editor? If I leave gnome-session alone, whenever I reboot the top panel keeps coming back. I have everything I want running out of the AWN dock, so I want to remove the panels completely but still have the ability to launch the run prompt.
I was trying to make my surround sound work and screwed things up. Anyways, one of them is the one with the vertical slider and the other one is the one with the horizontal slider. I want to get rid of the one with the vertical slider. How do I do this? (The one with the vertical slider is in the part where the "tray-ed" programs go). When I use my keyboard volume up and volume down buttons, I notice that the two controls respond APPROXIMATELY the same where one is slightly ahead of the other. If more information is needed, just ask.

I'll add an app, and after reboot (sometimes a couple) something or all are missing. If I try to add say Chrome back to it, I'll then have two of them. I've googled and LQ'd around to see up there a way to update the Gnome menus, which I found a few but nothing works

View 3 Replies View RelatedSo I just updated my IdeaPad to Natty and played around with Unity. The performane was absolutely unbearable so I installed Unity2D from the software center. Now when I start the session everything seems to be fine at first. Whenever I move the mouse over the panel though it seems to switch to my old gnome-panel from the "Classic" session (with some missing icons). When I move the mouse over that panel again it switches back to the Unity panel style. What is going on? Can I fix this somehow? I will have to use the classic session until I get a working consistent behavior
View 3 Replies View RelatedRegarding the gnome-panel in Ubuntu (64 bit).... I discovered some time ago that I wasn't the only one who routinely (every login) had their gnome-panel appear butchered, for which Alt-F2 then 'killall gnome-panel' would easily fix.
Having become impatient with this over the past 8 months, I decided I would automate the process and so cofiguring the startup applications seemed like a perfectly logical choice to me. Turns out I was wrong. After adding 'killall gnome-panel' to the startup applications not only does the panel fail to load altogether now, but Alt-F2 doesn't even work.
I tried Ctl-Alt-F1 and working with the graphics-free mode thinking I could somehow navigate to the startup apps config file and edit it, but I don't know where it is or how to edit it without logging in as root and I certainly don't know of any 'root password'.
How I can set that my left panel fit the top edge of the screen (instead of top panel)?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI recently did a fresh install of Lucid on an HP Pavilion dv6 Notebook PC laptop. At least once a day the main menu and context menus(desktop) in gnome stop working (They will not drop down/ appear). This includes all menus in gtk apps but not menus in not gtk apps such as firefox. I have an autohide panel at the top of the screen for my main menu, shortly after the menus stop working (but never at the same time), the panel wont unhide and the workspace swtcher applet stops working, this corresponds to when the buttons on the panel I can still see (at the bottom) stop working. When the workspace switcher applet goes, so to does the ability to switch using hotkeys (ctr alt left/right).
Suspending then resuming the laptop usually fixes these problem. Sometimes however 2 suspends are needed to fully fix the menus. It is possible for the context menu on the desktop to be working after a suspend, but not the main menu (but not always). A second suspend/ resume fixes this. I also noticed that this happened one of the times I booted a lucid release candidate live CD on my machine. I'm not sure but this may have something to do with the fact that I installed using a release candidate live CD instead of the proper release. (I have done all the updates).
