Ubuntu :: Panel Background Doesn't Appear Behind Icons?
Sep 5, 2010
Say I set a background color or custom image to a panel. The notification icons (sound, net activity, clock, etc) and a few other icons (trash, desktop) appear to retain the default background. Looks kind of funky. Any way I can make these icons conform to my custom background?

I have a problem with Ubuntu 4.10 and gnome-panel. The new icons are very nice, but if I go to open software like vlc or banshee get similar results: (See at the end of panel the icons of VLC and banshee)
I think a screenshot is worth a thousand words, how to resolve?

There's a strange thing with the Gnome desktop. When I right-click on the trash icon or on icons in the panel, I get this: How can I fix this?

If I try to change the icon style, it changes the icons in my desktop and in Nautilus, but it doesn't change the icons in the panels nor the ones in the menus.
Some screencaps:

This has been bothering me for a very long while now, but not enough for me to bother asking about it. I've looked up about the grey background in the tray in lucid, but I can't find anything where all my icons have the wrong background. This happened after I upgraded from karmic, and the problem only exists with the new themes.

This is how my Firestarter and Pidgin icons appear in the tray against a panel using an image background, even though the icons are transparent. What can be done to fix this? According to this five year old thread, GTK libraries didn't support transparency in the tray area back then, but surely this must've been fixed by now? There are even some links to bugfixes in that very thread, but I'm hesitant to apply something that old. What to do?

I am running CentOS 5.4, which I am occasionally managing via VNC from windows machine. This all occured after one long VNC session although I can't confirm this was the real reason. I also must say that I've seen some posts from people that had the same problem, but not anything helpful. Here is what happens:
Even if I start the machine from scratch I get the following error messages just before the login prompt and type of session window shows:
COULDN'T RECOGNIZE THE IMAGE FILE FORMAT FOR THE FILE '/USR/SHARE/GDM/THEMES/TREEFLOWER/BACKGROUND.PNG
THERE WAS AN ERROR LOADING THE THEME AND THE DEFAULT THEME COULD NOT BE LOADED. ATEMPTING TO START THE STANDARD GREETER.
If I choose GNOME and login I get more errors (for every icon I guess) saying:
COULD NOT LOAD ICON. UNRECOGNIZED FILE FORMAT.
Desktop then loads but there is no background image (other backgrounds don't work either) and the icons are question marks. All the menus and programs work normally.
KDE on the other hand works normally with all visuals, so I assume there must be something wrong with GDE PNG library or something, maybe GDE corruption. If I make another user it's the same story.

Alright, this has been driving me bonkers for months now and I can't find the answer anywhere. I like the custom theme options with standard gnome just fine, plenty of adjustments that can be made, with only one adjustment missing which would create perfection (at least in my opinion).
How on earth is it possible to change the backgrounds of the "mini-panels" which are always grey by default? No matter which Theme I choose and customize, I can never get the background color of the time/date applet, monitors, evolution, garbage can, and so on to change. I'd like to make all of the backgrounds transparent, not just the main panels that contain the other stuff. Is this even possible, and if so, how?I'm assuming since all of those apps have the same default color that an adjustment "wherever" would then change those default colors on all of the applets (hopefully).

having just begun using 11.04 I think this panel background, with its smooth gradient, gives the default theme a lift, especially on displays that aren't very flattering to the original background like my laptop's. This panel.bg file, dumped in my Ubuntu One storage and linked here, goes in usr/share/themes/Ambiance/gtk-2.0/apps/img (press alt F2, type gksu nautilus and enter your password and then navigate there) and you might want to c&p somewhere the one that's there first in case you disagree with me... You need to reboot or login to see the change of course. It was made from cropping a screenshot of the Ambiance window border and then turning it upside down. [URL]

Unlike ubuntu on xubuntu I am not able to add additional icons to the top panel. I wanted to add icons to start Open Office Writer and terminal but for some reason I can't.I right clicked on an app (icon) to add it to the panel but that does not work.I clicked on an app (icon) and tried to move it to the panel. No success.I right clicked on the panel and selected "Add new items" but the list of apps is limited.[edit] What I want to do is be able to launch applications from the top panel by adding icons to the panel.

Is there anyway to have like a desktop icon in the panel, that like shows all the items on the desktop but leaves the background clear, similar to how it is on windows? I keep creating new folders and i hate it when my desktop gets full.

I know how to change the colors of the panels. But on the parts were the ubuntu symbol, the menus (Applications, Places, and Systems), the date and time, and the indicator applets is, they do not change at all. And pretty much the same problem on the bottom panel.
I tried Gnome color changer but only works for the texts and the drop down menus. I use Gnome classic (hated Unity). My goal is to make ALL of the panel background black.

I've recently installed 10.04 on my laptop and spent some time configuring it. A while ago I've noticed that there are now two battery icons in the panel in the top-right corner. One seems to be attached to the indicator applet and the other one sits by itself. Changing the settings in the Power Management menu affects both icons in the same way (I can either show or hide them both). Is there any way to remove the extra icon and just keep the one integrated into the indicator?
This is a very minor annoyance really, but it'd still be nice if there was a fix for it.
Update: Now the battery icon in the indicator applet has changed to the chat "evelope" icon, but it still acts as a battery icon (same menu). Something is definitely not right here...

I have two icons on the far right of my top panel that have no "Move menu item". I would like to move them so that they are more to the left and the search is first on right followed by the time/date and everything else after that. One icon is Dropbox and the other is my wireless signal icon. How do I move these icons? There is no lock to panel or move menu item.

Been using Ubuntu for a year or so now. My drive crashed, so I started over, this time getting 11.04. Now, my icons on the upper right panel are just a black box with a red crossed-out circle. One is my internet connection, the other is Dropbox. Neither seems to be recognized.

I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS 32Bit on my Dell Inspiron B130 Laptop, and it works great, way faster then windows XP which was pre-installed on the machine. Everything worked out of the box except for the Wireless but after some reading I was able to get it to work by plugging it in to the wired connection. but anyway the problem I'm having is that it seems like after a few days of use ubuntu starts to act up, things become out of place and not work. this even happens with Linux Mint also. By acting up I mean, Icons start to disappear in the panel, my wireless connection starts to stop working and the only way to keep it on is to either log off and try to log in using KDE instead of GNOME. or open terminal and do the command nm-appt or something someone on the chat told me to do to try and get my wireless icon working.

Randomly, when I start up my computer, the top panel will have some icons missing, or an icon will be covered up by part of another.Example: Note that half of the battery icon is shown where the network manager applet should be. Here is what it is supposed to look like:
This happens very randomly. As you can see by the times, both of those were taken on the same day. I logged out and logged back in, and it look fine.

First user, everything still normal. All other users and any added users basically have no desktop now. Background and arrow are there, but no right-click no panels. Have tried every option in other similar posts including deleting .config, .gnome2, etc files. Also tried all the commands at URL..I can login user with xterm session and launch gnome-panel, which provides some functionality, but this basically sucks, because there is no window manager. I have tried changing themes and various compiz stuff, but no success yet. Even removed and reinstalled compiz.

I don't know what could be causing it, but my Icons from the panel sometimes won't show the whole icon, sometimes it show two icons overlapping each other, I was hoping it would be that I should have set the Panel size according to a "better" and standard Icons size, but that did'nt solve the problem as I changed to 48px; does anyone have a clue what could be causing it?
