For example, after installation the Logout button will be the button that is on the far right. Then after reboot, it will be the Volume icon, then after another reboot it might be Network icon

Jan 26, 2011I have been using Ubuntu without any problem for 2 years. Yesterday, when I booted Ubuntu, its power management is not working at start up: icons for battery, speaker, wireless not there + light icon says "cannot connect to gnome-power-manager".( in the screenshot) When I go System - Preferences - Power Management (1), it corrects only the light icon.I could only bring back wireless icon by "nm-applet" after doing (1).But other icons are not there still.

May 27, 2011I was trying to make my surround sound work and screwed things up. Anyways, one of them is the one with the vertical slider and the other one is the one with the horizontal slider. I want to get rid of the one with the vertical slider. How do I do this? (The one with the vertical slider is in the part where the "tray-ed" programs go). When I use my keyboard volume up and volume down buttons, I notice that the two controls respond APPROXIMATELY the same where one is slightly ahead of the other. If more information is needed, just ask.

May 26, 2011Surviving without mouse or touchpad I have been looking for this without initial success: only 2 oldie questions like the one I was going to place:

So the key keyboard shortcut is:
CTRL+ALT+TAB
With it you change the focus from the desktop to the panel, and vice versa When the focus in in the panel you can move from icon to icon with TAB (to the right) or SHIFT+TAB (to the left). Then Enter key (sometimes F10 instead) makes the same as left-clicking with the mouse, and SHIFT+F10 makes the same as right-clicking with the mouse. ESC key (sometimes Enter instead) takes the menus out.

1. Add drawer(s) on the gnome panel
2. add items to one or more of those drawers
3. reboot then:
1. all empty drawers can operate normally
2. drawers that have stuff in it cannot be opened.

Dec 4, 2010Regarding the gnome-panel in Ubuntu (64 bit).... I discovered some time ago that I wasn't the only one who routinely (every login) had their gnome-panel appear butchered, for which Alt-F2 then 'killall gnome-panel' would easily fix.
Having become impatient with this over the past 8 months, I decided I would automate the process and so cofiguring the startup applications seemed like a perfectly logical choice to me. Turns out I was wrong. After adding 'killall gnome-panel' to the startup applications not only does the panel fail to load altogether now, but Alt-F2 doesn't even work.
I tried Ctl-Alt-F1 and working with the graphics-free mode thinking I could somehow navigate to the startup apps config file and edit it, but I don't know where it is or how to edit it without logging in as root and I certainly don't know of any 'root password'.

May 17, 2011So I just updated my IdeaPad to Natty and played around with Unity. The performane was absolutely unbearable so I installed Unity2D from the software center. Now when I start the session everything seems to be fine at first. Whenever I move the mouse over the panel though it seems to switch to my old gnome-panel from the "Classic" session (with some missing icons). When I move the mouse over that panel again it switches back to the Unity panel style. What is going on? Can I fix this somehow? I will have to use the classic session until I get a working consistent behavior

Jun 30, 2010Since upgrading to Lucid a few days ago I'm having intermittent problems (90% of the time)with opening OpenOffice files.When I open up a spreadsheet (.ods) in OO, (whether OO was already open or not) my screens go black, then flash on and off for 30 seconds (ish) as if trying to change the refresh rate.Sometimes this results in Gnome crashing and restarting itself. it settles down and is OK. On a few occasions I have had to change terminal and manually restart gdm.
Here's my environment;
Dell Latitude D620
nVidia GeForce Go 7300 (according to hwinfo)
Ubuntu Lucid 32-bit (upgraded from Jaunty)
2 GB RAM
I've got the recommended "NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version current)" hardware driver and the NVIDIA X Server Settings applet, which says my NVIDIA driver version is 195.36.24. I'm running dual screens (1440x900 and 1280x1024) using TwinView. After a flicker, here is what I find in the Xorg.0.log;

I wanted to add icons to start Open Office Writer and terminal but for some reason I can't.I right clicked on an app (icon) to add it to the panel but that does not work.I clicked on an app (icon) and tried to move it to the panel. Jan 4, 2010Is it possible to have gnome's display settings recognise higher refresh rates than 56hz, as my nvidia is set to 85hz, but gnome display still thinks its 56hz, and I believe this is causing many programs I'm using to refresh at 56hz. Compiz works beautifully after overriding the refresh rate inside it, as it too thought I was using 56hz instead of 85 but many games aswell as CairoDock as jerky, which makes me think it is a refresh issue.
How can I make gnome know I'm using 85hz?

Aug 17, 2010I've recently installed 10.04 on my laptop and spent some time configuring it. A while ago I've noticed that there are now two battery icons in the panel in the top-right corner. One seems to be attached to the indicator applet and the other one sits by itself. Changing the settings in the Power Management menu affects both icons in the same way (I can either show or hide them both). Is there any way to remove the extra icon and just keep the one integrated into the indicator?
This is a very minor annoyance really, but it'd still be nice if there was a fix for it.
Update: Now the battery icon in the indicator applet has changed to the chat "evelope" icon, but it still acts as a battery icon (same menu). Something is definitely not right here...

I would like to move them so that they are more to the left and the search is first on right followed by the time/date and everything else after that. One icon is Dropbox and the other is my wireless signal icon. How do I move these icons? There is no lock to panel or move menu item.
