Mar 23, 2015I have installed a basic Debian system. I have a bootable Windows 7 ISO I'd like to install, but don't know how to do a USB install in Debian. I tried double clicking the USB logo in Debian and got an error message "Unable to mount Location. Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 1: helper failed with: Unprivileged user can not mount NTFS block devices using the external FUSE library. Either mount the volume as root, or rebuild NTFS-3G with integrated FUSE support and mkake it setuid root.

Apr 12, 2016I have installed jessie on a couple of machines. One is configured as the NFS filesystem exporter and NIS server. The other one, I am trying to configure as NFS and NIS client. NFS does not seem too much of a problem, I can mount the exported filesystem to a directory in the client and unmount it, but when I install NIS the system becomes very slow. Any command preceded by "sudo" takes a very long time (a few minutes) to complete. Then, upon rebooting the system, it reports many services failed to start (login, accounts, modem manager, avahi, network manager, exim). When if finally completes, I get a terminal login, instead the graphic login window.

Aug 4, 2010iam trying to install net-snmp-5.5.zip in debian system. The steps i followed are,
1) ./configure --prefix=PATH
2) make
3) make install
4) copied the mib file in to PATH/share/snmp/mibs.
5) copied the config file in to PATH/share/snmp.
till this every thing is proper.i am able to install in user defined path which i mentioned during configuration, that is other than the default directory /usr/local.
the problem i faced is when #include <net-snmp/net-snmp-config.h> is used in our application it is showing net-snmp/net-snmp-config.h : No such file or directory.

Mar 20, 2010I installed openoffice 3.2 but had insufficient diskspace at /opt. Thereafter I receive this message if I start the package/update manager.
"A unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information. Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message:
'E:The package ooobasis3.2-math needs to be reinstalled, but I can't find an archive for it.'"
Uninstall and reinstall (at a different location (/usr/opt) is not possible although there is enough space.

The machine I'm trying to install on is a Gateway NV53, 4gb of RAM, AMD Athlon II x64.
At first I thought it might be my disc so I burnt another DVD using the 4.3GB DVD image I had downloaded. I checked the disc and it verified with the image and so I tried again with the same results as above. Any clue what might be causing this? I'm sure it isn't my hardware, Arch has been running fine for almost 6 months and never seemed to care.

Aug 28, 2010i reached step six where it states "6. When the root and swap partitions are formatted the base installation will begin. Note that your system may appear to hang at different points during the install but it hasn't. Just be patient." I have been staring at a blank blue screen with this blinking cursor at the bottom for 30 minutes and i was just wondering how much more "patient" will it take. for some system details. the system is clean / fist time run and anything installed on it.

Debian CD and DVD images can now be written directly a USB stick, which is a very easy way to make a bootable USB stick. Simply choose a CD or DVD image that will fit on your USB stick. See Section 4.1,Official Debian GNU/Linux CD-ROM Sets¯ to get a CD or DVD image.
Alternatively, for very small USB sticks, only a few megabytes in size, you can download the mini.iso image from the netboot directory (at the location mentioned in Section 4.2.1,Where to Find Installation Image¯).The CD or DVD image you choose should be written directly to the USB stick, overwriting its current contents.

Sep 6, 2011I purchased an older Dell (p4 1.8G 256M) just to run some low demand programs. They don't require a GUI - just ssh/cli type of access. will be a server type - no kb or monitor. Can someone give me some pointers where to start at? I've never done a Debian install - the install process may address these questions - but figured I would throw it out here. I've used Ubuntu for several years now but I doubt that it would be the best distro for a legacy system....

Aug 20, 2015I've been carefully installing and personalizing a Debian 8 "Jessie" 64-bit install on my laptop for the last few days. Played some games, did some downloading and stuff and decided to want to run steam again, as I have done on many Ubuntu installs in the past.

and of course, I read the warnings: Only do this on Jessie or SID, not on Wheezy. So I was in the clear. I thought.
After giving 'aptitude install steam' all hell broke loose. The script starting demolishing/removing almost everything under the KDE shell. Wireless network, apps, even the ability to reboot the system from the GUI were utterly and completely destroyed. After the script ended I had to reboot the system through an alternate CLI shell only to discover X was complete gone.
So I don't think there is anything else I can do now except re-installing the complete system? Bye bye Wesnoth saved games, downloads, etcetera...
Debian :: New Install Running Slow - System Freezes Every 30 Seconds Or So
Sep 26, 2015So i just finally installed Debian Jessie OS, replacing Ubuntu. But now it is running extremely slow. It's not internet connection. The internet speed is running fine (Videos load quickly), but it's like the system freezes every 30 seconds or so. A video can be fully loaded but still stops and starts constantly. Just browsing the internet, or non-internet things do the same also. I switched back to Ubuntu to see if it was different on there, but Ubuntu is running fine.

Jul 24, 2010I downloaded the first Lenny DVD for amd64, wrote it but on trying the install on my laptop (Gateway NV5389u) I cant get past the installing base system step: I get an error that some files are corrupt / cannot be read from the DVD. I am wondering whether there's a way I can download a minimal version or just the files needed for the base system installation then use the same DVD to install the packages, coz I have a terribly slow internet connection it took me a whole 2 days to download, and I surely cant stand any more of it.

I do not want to screw up my 'grub' as it's been trashed a couple of times recently and had to re-install everything, which went great with install setting up partitions. I am not sure where 'grub' is installed to. I did install Windows 7 first then let installer split hard drive in half to put Ubuntu on then while installing my second Ubuntu, I let installer split the Ubuntu partition in half, hence the 167 GB Windows and the 2 smaller partitions for Ubuntu.I was thinking to maybe let Debian install over my Maverick install. Would that work and not mess up my Grub and cause me to not be able to boot and have to fix the drama?

Debian :: Chromium Browser Install Ruined System - Way To Reverse?
Sep 1, 2011I've been using Debian for a month or so now and was really happy with it. I wanted to use Chromium browser and followed the instructions on the Debian wiki [URL].... but the install deleted a load of settings, network manager etc. Is there a way I can find a log of what happened? Is there a way to reverse that or shall I just reinstall?

Mar 1, 2010After a fresh install of Debian I came across an error Im hoping you guys can help me with. Ive searched for the error and it appears there are multiple reasons that could be causing it. To compound the problem, Im at work so I dont have the specific error messages....so I just installed Lenny (standard install, no desktop) using a USB installer and everything went very smooth. On first boot, the system paused while waiting for the root file system. After a minute or two it just errored out complaining it could not find the root file system and put me at a (vmlinuz) prompt?My guess is that I need to go into my bios and change my boot priority.. but again, thats just a guess.

Jun 1, 2013I'm a long time user of Debian, but I'm having trouble with my partitioning process. Here is where I currently stand:
I am installing the latest Wheezy build. I am trying to install debian with an encrypted LVM that spans two hard disks.
My partitioning layout is as:
1. /home
2. /root
3. swap
4. /boot
I then added partitions 1, 2 and 3 to a physical volume group. I then took that physical volume group and added it to a logical volume. Then I encrypted the logical volume, leaving the /boot partition untouched. I was under the assumption that the only partition the system needed free to reach the loading of the LVM is the /boot partition, as it holds the files necessary for booting. But when I attempt to finalize the disk, it gives an error stating, "No root file system detected". That would be an issue as it is currently sitting inside the encrypted LV. Am I wrong in including the root partition in the encrypted LV?
What is the best way of having as little of my file system non-encrypted as possible while still allowing a proper boot?
Debian Installation :: USB Stick Install Fails - Missing Operating System
Nov 18, 2014I want to try Debian on my Asus Eee netbook and I'm trying to follow the instructions in URL... But just copying the ISO file to the USB drive then trying to boot from it doesn't seem to work. I just get "Missing operating system".
The Eee can use an external optical drive as well but that failed also. I'm sure I need to do more to prepare the USB drive or CD? Can I prepare the USB Drive or CD on my Windows system, and make it boot on the netbook (which has another Linux distro on it now)?

Aug 26, 2011Has anyone had any luck in trying to install wheezy (latest testing snapshot available) on any system with either a AMD/ATI 68xx or 69xx card?All goes well in the install, but on reboot, all that is seen is a "_" and no text, and it hard locks.I am pretty sure this is a conflict with the video card drivers that get installed by default (and which should be blacklisted), but I have no idea how to fix it.The recovery mode don't work either, it is the same "_" with no text, and it ends up hard locking. There is no chance at getting access to a console at all.

Sep 25, 2010My problem is that I need to move a moderately complex system from an old system to a new system. The old system is a core 2 duo running on an asus p5k-se (p35 chipset) M/B, Nvidia 8500 gt, 3 x sata II hard disks, 1 x sata dvd, 1 x ide hd, 4GB ram. It runs opensuse 11.1 kde 4 as a desktop system + samba server, apache server, database server + other non-opensuse software. In addition some of the opensuse software is not the default 11.1 versions as later versions were required. The nvidia driver is from the nvidia repo. There are several file systems, some under LVM.
The new system will be a core5 760, asus p7p55d-e M/b (p55 chipset), nvidia 240, 3 x sata II HD, 1 x sata dvd, 4GB ram and possibly 1 x ide HD. This M/B also includes USB 3 & sata III. I have no USB 3 devices but this may eventually change. I have no plans for sata III and believe that it may be better to attach any sata III SSD to the sata II bus.
What I would like to do is to move the hard disks from old system to the new system. What I would like to know is, if the system is left at 11.1, is the system likely to work with the new hardware. If the answer is no, if the system was upgraded to 11.3, would the transfer of the hard disks then work? In order to upgrade from 11.1 to 11.3 using the DVD i believe I should get rid of all non-default repos. I assume that I should also get rid of anything that was installed from them, e.g. the nvidia driver and any software versions installed manually outside RPM. Also is there any default 11.1 software that should be removed either before or after the upgrade to 11.3

Feb 16, 2010I wish to use my laptop to create a system for my Soekris 4801. I don't want to take the server down for the lengthy install ( took 6 hours last time, Fedora 5 ). I want to create the image on a USB drive for the 586 Soekris server on my 686 HP laptop. Then scp the image to the Soekris and reboot and configure the server.
