View 3 RepliesI am running debian unstable on my netbook lenovo s10-3t. after updating system yesterday i can't login. when i turn laptop on i get gdm login screen. when i enter my username and password it is loading for 30 seconds or so and then i get back to login screen. alt+ctrl+Fn doesn't work after that (but works before). there is no errors in x server log (cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep EE gives nothing). in xsession-errors there is something about "_Polkit". also before fatal io error 11 i have nautilus-gdu extension going to be initializing. i tried to remove /etc/X11/xorg.conf and get new by X -configure, but there was no change in behaviour of gdm. i also tried to add new user, but again, no changes.
View 5 Replies View Relatedi have to reinstall my pc with a testing version. The installation almost is the same as stable version (lenny). But, the problem is that, i can't login it after the installation completed. The new user i created during installation is invalid! So, i have to enter the single user mode, to my surprise, the new user(i created before) doesn't exist! So, i add a user here.But, i still can't login to my system as the normal mode.How should i resolve such a problem?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've just started using Debian having previously used Ubuntu. With Ubuntu, under the System->Administration menu I get lots of options (e.g. Network Tools, Printing, Services...) to select from, but with Debian I just get Login Screen. Do I just get the one option because this is the only thing installed, or do I need to do something to enable other admin options?
View 3 Replies View RelatedDebian 5.0. Lately after login following warning popup;Your system had a kernel failure
There is diagnostic information availiable for this failure. Do you want to submit this infomation to the www.kerneloops.org
-> Yes
$ uname -aLinux vm0.debian50 2.6.26-2-686 #1 SMP Wed May 12 21:56:10 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux
Reboot to old kernel 2.6.26-1 the said warning doesn't popup. Reboot again to kernel 2.6.26-2 and after login no kernel failure warning popup. I did it twice. IIRC I encountered this problem before.
I'm hoping someone can help me out.I made configurations changes to/etc/pam.d/system-auth and /etc/pam.d/login. When these files are configured the way they are, I can't login and/or I can't login in the GUI interface and a terminal. Contents of /etc/pam.d/login

System was fine with :Ubuntu 9.04 (had also installed kde )then....I wanted to try some change to gdm so i downloaded gdm while building it , it asked "PAM" libraries to be installed so i installed PAM ... but ignored the instruction to reinstall SHADOW (library i guess..),Now :on booting system i get login menu but i am not able to login , it says some critical error occured

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an iMac G4 that I installed Jessie on successfully. However, when it boots, one of the last messages is:
[FAILED] Failed to start Load Kernel Modules.
Last line is something along the lines of:
fb: switching to nouveaufb from OFfb NVDA,NVMac
And then the text starts dissolving, and the entire screen cycles through different colors. I presume it is sitting at the graphical login prompt but it's not displaying correctly.
Based on some Google searches, it seems like I should be able to resolve this by editing /etc/modules but I can't get to that point. I have tried to get to a terminal using ctrl-alt-F1 through ctrl-alt-F12. No luck. I tried different yaboot options that were supposed to avoid using the video driver. No luck. How do I get the machine to boot straight to a regular text login instead of the X one?
This machine worked fine running Mac OS X this morning, so I don't think it's the hardware. What I can do.
How to enable Root login...i cant copy or move something on the HDD...I have administrator rights and password for root but i cant change permissions for the HDD without login on root and root login are not allowed .
View 10 Replies View RelatedI have Ubuntu 9.04 and I have encrypted swap, root partitions and two internal hard drives with this howto: [URL]. It's been working about a year now but after an routine fsck (when Ubuntu starts) I can't log in no more. After first passphrase (must be the root partition) the scrolling thingy stops and "Caps lock" and "Scroll lock" starts to blink and nothing happens. I have two 1 TB drives full of data which I can't get in to.
View 5 Replies View RelatedFor some reason I am no longer able to log into my Ubuntu 9.10 system. I get to enter the password and it accepts it, starts to log me in but then throws me back to the login screen again without even a glimpse of the desktop. What could be causing this? Everything was working fine yesterday and I haven't made any changes to the OS.
View 9 Replies View RelatedAfter I login as root, it displays the MOTD and shuts down. During the bootup process it says that Runlevel is set to 0. I checked through init and inittab, the runlevel was still 3. I didn't think this would be it because I'm already logging in, but I figured I'd try. I went through rc.sysinit, rc.local, shadow and profile and I cannot find a reason for it.

Just installed Lucid Lynx on my Desktop and after logging in I would get a 15-20 second pause before Gnome appeared. I found many many potential solutions for this problem on the Internet but none solved it. Finally figured out that it was due to the system seeing a floppy controller when I have no floppy drive. I was led to this conclusion by the following two lines in my syslog (System > Administration > Log FIle Viewer > Syslog).
May 1 18:27:04 Desk-Ubuntu kernel: [ 34.636665] end_request: I/O error, dev fd0, sector 0
May 1 18:27:16 Desk-Ubuntu kernel: [ 46.813441] end_request: I/O error, dev fd0, sector 0
Note the 12 second delay when it tries to read again.
So if you are getting the pause and seeing the same thing your system log then ...
Enter your BIOS and disable the floppy drive Use sudo and edit /etc/fstab commenting out the line with fd0 in it
Hope I can save someone else the headache of hunting through the Interwebs and finding 5 different solutions none of which worked. Learning as I go with Ubuntu so I didn't even know how to carry out most of the "solutions" which required more googling. I am migrating from FreeBSD due to application requirements
I'm running a fresh install of Lucid without any issues thus far. I have my computer setup to log me in automatically, without requesting a password.
I installed Gnome-do and set it up to run at login (as I always have). After a reboot, my system is not responding to input from my mouse or keyboard. I can move my cursor, but it will not accept input.
I see gnome-do, which is partially covered by the "Unlock keyring" dialog" (which always comes up, I think to unlock my wifi).
I was experimenting WINE in my Ubuntu machine. After a while I've decided to remove it. I uninstalled the application that I installed using WINE (Steam - Day of Defeat). And then I ran the following command:
sudo apt-get remove wine*
I checked (using tab) and only wine, wine1.2 and wine-gecko where there to remove. After doing this I shutdown my computer. When I turned it on again everything was fine until I had to pass trough the login page. I've inserted my credentials and then when I clicked in "Login" it appears a dark screen and then again the Login screen.
i used to use jaunty earlier but now i use lucid and a small thing that irritates me is that there is no 'login window' in 'system' menu.

I just receive news from my superior. He said he cannot login to system Red Hat using root password.So when i check, someone change root password. I restart server and login as single user. When i put new password, it not change.How to fix it? Is that mean someone just hack my server? That server is in DMZ zone.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI was logged in, but had not used the computer for about 48 hours. When I 'woke' the system, I could see that Thunderbird and Firefox were active, just as I had left them. I moved the mouse, the screen went black and the mouse pointer was visible (and could move). The system stayed like this for about 2 minutes, then wend down completely. I cut power, booted and got the login screen. Each time I put in my password, it looks as if it is loading but then just goes right back to the login screen. I have no problem logging in as root.
