i install debian 8.2 on my laptop(ASUS G751jy) it install perfectly without any error on dual boot with windows 8.1 but debian not boot show some line and then nothing ! (attached image )it seems can't load driver of wifi Bluetooth and trackpad but kernel driver (iwlwifi) support my wifi/bluetooth card

I have Lenny, and Jaunty Jackaope installed on the same hdd. Jaunty Jackaope was installed 2nd so it has control of grub (I don't know if that is the correct expression) I want to remove Jaunty Jackalope however I know from past experience that after I do this I will no longer be able to boot into Lenny as I will get a grub error at startup. How to I give boot/grub to Lenny so that I can remove the other operating system?

When it gets to the end of the installation process the installer asks whether I want to go ahead with the Grub Boot Loader, I choose yes. The end result is however that I can't boot that partition within the hard drive -- i.e., Debian. Can someone tell me what is going on? Should I not use the Grub Boot Loader when I have more than one operating system on a machine? Should I not install Grub on the Master Boot Record (MBR)?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm running Debian Squeeze on a Dell Studio Laptop, and this morning my computer woke up and gnome was randomly frozen. I dismissed this as a random error and proceeded to hard-reboot the computer. It now will not boot at all. After multiple attempts, every time the boot process hangs on "Starting GNOME display manager gdm3." I even left it there for 2 hours while I was gone to see if it would get past the hang. It did not, and was still stopped at that same line when I got back. get my system back. I have a live CD available to perform maintenance if anyone has an idea of what's wrong.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have always used apt-get to update the system. Yesterday, I was doing some tests and one of them was to try to update the system using the aptitude command, instead. I ran aptitude update and then aptitude safe-ugrade. I thought that wouldn't be a problem, but I was wrong. This morning I found the computer just can't boot.
I get this message:
I have Squeeze in another partition on that computer. I can access the system through the terminal (the graphic is screwed). Is it possible to try my Lenny from this partition? If not, I also have a live cd for Squeeze. Right now I'm on another computer.
I've installed 6.0.1a on my xi3 box [URL] and it works great. However when I remove the monitor and keyboard it doesn't boot (I don't know how far it gets, there is no monitor...). I did not install, and do not want, any kind of GUI interface, command line only. This is going in a closet as a solid state rsync backup repo. I have another small system (not this exact one) running Lenny that runs just fine headless - is this some kind of Squeeze regression? Is there any way I can get this running headless (I can't run Lenny on this box because I don't think the Marvell GbE driver is there or is working in Lenny.

I tried also to make a bootable usb w/ unetbootin but all the distros failed to load w/ a syslinux boot error message so I really need to fix the existing debian installation to get access to my files i need for the university, it's debian stable (6.0.4) on hp mini 210 ....
I've had to give up trying to install linux. It just won't work on my machine, a Presario 6370us that has been upgraded over the years such that it is not compatible with linux, apparently. (You can read my travails elsewhere on this board; thanks very much to all who tried to help.)
Now, how do I remove the GRUB boot loader from my system? I need the system to boot directly to Windows XP.
I can't start linux in any way, shape, or form, so I need to either edit GRUB inside the GRUB environment itself, or to do so from Windows.
Ideally, I'd like to remove GRUB entirely. Failing that, I'd like to edit the GRUB config file so that only Windows is an option. Failing that, I need to make Windows the default OS.

I do not want to screw up my 'grub' as it's been trashed a couple of times recently and had to re-install everything, which went great with install setting up partitions. I am not sure where 'grub' is installed to. I did install Windows 7 first then let installer split hard drive in half to put Ubuntu on then while installing my second Ubuntu, I let installer split the Ubuntu partition in half, hence the 167 GB Windows and the 2 smaller partitions for Ubuntu.I was thinking to maybe let Debian install over my Maverick install. Would that work and not mess up my Grub and cause me to not be able to boot and have to fix the drama?
I am new to Linux and Debian. I have Compaq Presario R3000 laptop, which is 5 years old now. I have RealTek RTL8139 family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC. Currently I have a broadband connection at home. I have dual boot Windows XP Professional and Debian (which I installed a week ago through CD). I have done some preliminary tests for the network and I am posting the screenshots for the tests (e.g. lspci, ifconfig, etc.). I also did two more commands. For 'cat /etc/network/ifstate' the output was 'No such file or directory'. Same output was for the command 'cat /etc/network/options'.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI am on debian jessie. I ran "apt-get update && apt-get upgrade" and midway through the upgrade my computer suddenly rebooted.
I wasn't paying close attention to the upgrade process so I didnt see if there was any error messages right before the reboot. The laptop was plugged in, fully charged and I've never had issues with overheating.
When I boot now I get to a shell with a message that says:
Code: Select allWelcome to emergency mode. After logging in type "journalctl -xb" to view system logs, "systemctl reboot" to reboot, "systemctl default" to try again to boot into default mode.
If I try "systemctl default" there's a message that simply says "Hangup", nothing else happens.
Looking through "journalctl -xb" I see this:
Code: Select allFailed to insert module 'autofs4'
Failed to open /dev/autofs: No such file or directory
Failed to initialize automounter: No such file or directory
Failed to set up automount Arbitrary Executable File Formats File System Automount Point.

If I retry "apt-get upgrade" it says:
Code: Select alldpkg was interrupted, you must maually run dpkg --configure -a to correct the problem
If I run "dpkg --configure -a" stops at the package cups-browsed with message saying "Hangup"

Is this fixable without jumping through too many hoops or should I just reinstall the system? I need the computer for work so Im not gonna spend days trying to fix it without reinstalling.
I want to build a custom system and I need your opinions. I have an old laptop which I want to configure as a system for troubleshooting purpose, my idea is to have multi-boot system with multiple root file systems, e.g. one root file system has only BIND to work as DNS server, another root file system has only Samba, etc., and I can choose which system to boot into from grub, or a custom menu after booting grub.
I thought of setting multiple partitions and install a full system on each one, but I thought that there might be a better way to do this, I'd like to hear your opinions.
I have just recently installed firestarter to get an idea of iptables editing with a GUI. Firestarter works great and I love it, however when I turn my system on, and my system is booting up the terminal displays a "Failed" message when attempting to start up firestarter. Now I have been doing my homework (reserch) and have read that a user will get this error because firestarter trys to load prior to the network manager starting up. I have also read some other variables that can cause this is if you use network manager and have a password on your user account (which I do have) can cause this issue.
However in most cases from what I have read is even though it gives the user a "Failed" startup message, once the user logs in, and is connected to the internet firestarter will actually load the iptables. I did some tests and from what I understand I can see that this is true because I have allowed access to certain torrent trackers, and denied access to others, and I can see some come online. Does firestarter load iptables once the user logs in? Or once it fails to load, does it not load at all unless you manually open/load the application. If firestarter just modifies iptables, then once I save my listings in firestarter then I really don't need it to start up correct?
I'm having difficulties mounting an FTP address to my file system automatically during boot. After a bit of research I have discovered a package called curlftpfs, I've installed this package using aptitude and I had no errors.
I've successfully mounted an FTP address manually using curlftpfs at the command line and proved to myself that this is working as it should...However, I can't get this to mount automatically and I am receiving the following error during boot when I try and mount it through /etc/fstab...
Error connecting to ftp: Failed to connect to (IP address of server): Network is unreachable
My research indicates this package should be able to do this.
I'm still a learner when it comes to Linux, but could this be because TCP/IP services are not started at the time of mounting the filesystems? I've tried a continuous ping at this computer whilst it is booting and I don't get a response until after /etc/fstab has been processed. If this is the reason, can I start them these processes earlier?
Another option would be to have a script/command run when the computer boots, but prior to MySQL loading. If this is possible, it would also satisfy my problems.
i had debian linux and windows before but because of some problem in my windows i was persuade to change that but after installing there is no option in boot menu to choose my operating system ,after turning on win7 will work, what should i do? i need my linux immediately.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have installed Debian Jessie 8.0.3 64-bit net install on an IBM ThinkCentre. I have earlier had a dual boot Win 8 and Ubuntu 14.04 installed on the computer. When I installed Debian Jessie, I deleted the Ubuntu partitions and created new partitions from the free space. The install went fine and the Debian EFI/UEFI version of Grub was installed, but clearly at some other place, as when I boot the system, the old Ubuntu Grub pops up and of course cannot find the necessary files that it is looking for.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have been frustrated attempting to get Grub2 to boot a Debian Live system from hard disk. Have set aside a 4gb partition /dev/sda1 to contain the Debian Live and some other recovery tools. I actually have them all working from a 4gb USB stick successfully, but getting it to work on my HDD has proved challenging. On USB, I have PartedMagic, Gparted, Grml, and of course my standard 6.01 Squeeze. I have also managed to get the Debian Live booting from that USB stick. Very slick.
However, I can NOT get Debian Live to boot from my HDD; altho all of the others above boot fine. Have tried it two ways - one using an iSO image, which is how it is done on my USB stick. The other attempt is to copy the entire contents of the ISO to a directory.
Here are my directory structures:
debian_live_gnome_squeeze_i386- contains the following: debian-live-6.0.1-i386-gnome-desktop.iso initrd.gz initrd.img vmlinuz which is how it is laid out on my USB stick debian_live - contains the files from the ISO image The error I get is something like "panic unable to find live filesystem" My grub.cfg snippet for the two methods I have tried - the 2nd menuentry is similar to how it works on the USB stick.

Probly don't really need to get it working since PartedMagic can do almost everything I need for recovery and I can use the USB for reinstall or whatever else.
I installed some time ago a Wheezy with speech synthesis, so the audio _does_ work, as I currently can hear boot messages. However, after login I can't hear any other audio, neither streaming nor mp3.
The boot messages feature some complaint about Pulse Audio. (I get similar complaints on another machine whose audio does work anyway)
