Software :: Prevent Kdeinit4 - 100% CPU Loading?

May 20, 2011

There are thousands of threads in the Internet about kdeinit4 problem and I searched them for a solution but all I got is: it's a bug, accept it. There is this solution here and I added

Code:
[DirWatch]
PollInterval=60000
as plamaiziere said, but this changed nothing.

So kdeinit4 loads my CPU 100%. Maybe someone has figured out how to prevent this from happening? I use IceWM but have KDE fully installed because I use a lot of apps from KDE group.

CentOS 5 :: Prevent Device-mapper From Loading In Installer

Mar 5, 2009

I am trying to prevent the dm_mod and friends from loading during install.I am installing by PXE boot with NFS and kickstart files over http. This works fine for other machines.Ok, I have a Dell PowerEdge 2900 III with 8gig ram, PERC 6/i raid controller.The raid has 8 1TB drives in it, so the total size of the device is >2TB.There is also an SATA drive, which is NOT on the raid controller.

The problem is, I want to install CentOS on the SATA drive. The SATA drive comes up as a device-mapper drive, with a big crazy device name.This is ok, but the problem is, when the system goes to boot, it just says 'missing operating system'.I can't boot from the raid because it is large enough to require a GPT partition, and CentOS says it can't boot from a GPT partition.The SATA drive would work FINE if I could just prevent the damn device mapper from loading, so that I could install on the SATA drive in ordinary SATA mode.

I have tried re-squashing the stage2.img with /etc/modprobe.conf with alias dm_mod off and such, no luck.I also tried adding an /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist file, that did not work either.I also tried putting blacklist= dm_mod in the kickstart file, but that seems to be a fedora-only option and it kills my install. any ideas on preventing the dm_mod et. al. from loading at install time??

Ubuntu :: Prevent Loading X During Startup After Error In Xorg.conf

Is there a way I can stop the loading of X, so I can undo the error in Xorg.conf and hopefully make Ubuntu load normally again? Grub automatically loads Ubuntu, there is no Grub menu that allows loading of some alternative config.

Slackware :: Could Not Start KDEinit4 - Check Installation

Jan 9, 2011

So I closed out X with ctrl+alt+backspace, and when I did startx it showed the Nvidia splash screen like usual, then shows for just a second that loading splash screen that KDE does. Then a little box pops into the top left corner that says "Could not start kdeinit4. Please check installation." I hit okay on the box, it takes me back to the terminal. I try again, same result. I reboot. Same result. So I use xwmconfig to change to enlightenment, which boots up fine. So I ctrl+alt+backspace out and retry KDE again, with the same problem.

This is the first time I've closed out KDE in over a week, so I guess its possible that anything I've done over that time may have somehow broken it. I hadn't noticed any problems til now. The only reason I did it this time was because I'd changed the KDE plasma theme and I wanted to watch the new one boot up. I'm typing on the same computer and the same Slackware installation right now, just running E instead of KDE.

OpenSUSE Install :: Login (Could Not Start Kdeinit4) Yast2 Error

Sep 8, 2011

I am using opensuse 11.3. I am encountering a problem while trying to log in. The problem message was
"could not start kdeinit4. Check your installation"
I tried to solve this problem by following the instructions given in OpenSuSE 11.0 Could not start kdeinit4... i.e., I opened yast2 and then I had to select "software management" from there in order to update all the packages in kde4. But I got another error when I clicked it.

/usr/lib/YaST2/bin/y2base:/usr/local/lib/libstdc++.so.6: no version information available (required by /usr/lib/YaST2/plugin/libpy2wfm.so.2)

The error list continues. I cannot type whole error list ending with similar wordings as above as am using different computer. I tried to solve this one too by following the instructions in Relocation Error but I could not understand its line "...fixed the problem by taking /usr/local/lib out of ld.so.conf, and then running ldconfig" as am new to linux.

OpenSUSE Install :: Kdeinit4/tracker-miner Hogs CPU For Ages After Login?

Mar 29, 2011

My configuration is OpenSuSE 11.4/KDE4/32bit. I am noticing that for about 20 minutes (or more) after first login every time there is a process which takes 100% CPU for most of the time and, of course, slows everything down. The system monitor suggests it is the 'tracker-miner' process (whatever that is). Do I need the tracker-miner? What good does it do? Is there any way to stop it (not to start it)?

General :: How To Prevent VNC From Swapping HD

Apr 6, 2010

Actually I'm not sure that it's swapping like mad: I've done more testing and it looks like there may some interference causing the noise that may be correlating with network usage. I'm accessing a MacMini (with MacOS X 10.4) from my Linux machine using VNC. My Linux machine has 4 GB of ram and I run a lot of various apps on it and I've got no issue at all. It's all snappy and don't hear the hard disk swapping/read/writing too often. Now with VNC, the hard disk is swapping like mad. When I'm moving things on the OS X desktop. So I was thinking of creating a ramdisk and forcing the temp VNC files to go into that ramdisk but the problem is I can't find any temp files.

I've attempted to do that:
#!/bin/bash
while [ true ]
do
lsof | grep vnc
done

The VNC version I'm using is this one:
$ vncviewer -version
VNC Viewer Free Edition 4.1.1 for X - built Jan 30 2009 19:33:16
Copyright (C) 2002-2005 RealVNC Ltd.
No matter how much data is coming from the Mac, there should be plenty of memory (4 GB of ram) so there's really no reason to swap like crazy.

Debian :: Prevent Grub-pc From Linking To Other OSs?

Oct 25, 2010

I want to prevent grub-pc from automatically creating links to other operating systems on my laptop. Whenever there is a kernel update, grub.cfg ends with links pointing at my Windows 7 installation - I want to get rid of those links. At the moment I am doing that by manually editing the grub.cfg file and it has always worked that way. I tried to force grub-pc to avoid creating links to Windows by renaming the relevant scripts in /etc/grub.d edbarx@edbarx-pc2:/etc/grub.d$ ls 00_header  05_debian_theme  10_linux  20_linux_xen  _30_os-prober  _30_otheros  40_custom  41_custom  README As you can see I added an underscore to the files that I don't want to be executed.

I think this can be solved by changing the file permissions of the unwanted scripts making them impossible to execute.

edbarx@edbarx-pc2:/etc/grub.d$ ls -l
total 52
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 6433 Aug  7 18:10 00_header
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1474 Jul 16 18:46 05_debian_theme
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 4252 Aug  7 18:10 10_linux
