Mar 23, 2010I (somewhat foolishly) decided to reformat windows XP and make my foray in the Ubuntu world with Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid just last week. It has treated me fairly well so far and with the help of others posts have been able to get most everything setup to my liking. However...My Problem:I tried to install the ATI drivers for my radeon 9700 using ati-driver-installer-9-3-x86.run. I tried to install it using the Ubuntu/9.04 settings, hoping that I could get it to work like that and I was quite wrong. When I restarted my computer I was started in simple graphics mode, and now I'm trying to set things right again.'ve un-installed the fglrx drivers (I think...) and now I'm stuck. Dec 12, 2010I am planning on upgrading the video card in my computer, an NVidia GeForce 9500 GT video card, to something that can handle at least 1600x1200 24-bit resolution without noticeable choppiness other "slow-downs" in graphic display. The card in question does have one gigabyte of RAM, but the type of memory it utilizes is DDR2 instead of something, i.e. DDR3 and above, with greater speed. Admittedly, the system in question is used for gaming as well as work. I want to stick with the NVidia brand because it has worked well for me, but I am not sure what would be the correct line of cards to use.

Dec 22, 2010so I've got a openSuse 11.3 machine with KDE. As graphic card I've got a 9500GT and as display a syncmaster 570b. Now both work fine with other products (9500GT works fine on my other display and my Windows laptop works fine with the syncmaster 570). I also installed nvidia drivers via yast2. But how do I change the frequency? I've been trying to solve the problem for hours. Oh yeah when I connect my 570b to my 9500gt, I sometimes get a picture and sometimes don't. However when I get a picture colors are very strange and it flickers hardly.

Feb 25, 2010I have Ubuntu 9.10 installed on my computer. I also have Galaxy (Nvidia) 9500 GT PCI-E card installed on it. I can get both monitors (Acer X223w) to work but every time I shut off the computer and turn it back on the second monitor is shut off. I just need to turn it back on using Nvidia X Server Settings. I have tried to save my X configuratin file but I keep getting an error of:" Unable to remove old X config backup file '/etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup'. I have a feeling this is because I am not signed in as root. Is this correct? If this is the case is there a way to get to sign in as root not using the command lines? Otherwise they need to remove this button. I can manually create a backup (copy paste into a text file). I think. Getting back to my Xorg.conf file, I think I need to modify it to have two screens. I have also got some information on my video card using the lspci command. I think I need some information from this. I have written below (towards the bottom) what I think the file should be. Now before I do this, does anybody know of an easy way to back up my whole computer? With my luck I am about to screw something up big time. I think I can just get away with the text file that I copied from the Xorg. Worst case scenario I will just manually replace the file.

Okay, this is what I think I need to do: I tried to add color to make it easier to find the changes I made but for some reason I cannot. I will add **** on the end (right side) so my additions and questions will be easier to find.
Do I need to add another Device for the video? Doesn't make sense to me since I only have one video card. I was told it should be based on the # of chips on the card. So I guess I should have two of them since I have two outputs.

How to get back to original nouveau driver after failed nvidia driver install?
What probably happened was a wrong nVidia driver install from the repository.. Because never had any problems earlier, but after I installed some nVidia packages, I get this error.
I already tried to remove nvidia driver by
# aptitude purge nvidia-kernel-dkms nvidia-glx
It was successful.
Then I reinstalled Xorg Nouveau driver and all its denpendencies by
# aptitude install xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
It was also successful.
But problem still occurs..

If I update gcc, it says that the gcc version used to compile the kernel mismatch my gcc version. If I ignore that error, it says that it can't find my kernel source.

May 19, 2010I've built a new kernel (2.6.34) on our workstation at work. It boots and runs beautifully, but there is one minor problem. I created the kernel as a Debian package along with the kernel headers. Upon installing both and attempting to build the nVidia driver for said kernel, the installer tells me that it cannot determine the version and quits. This happens even if I manually specify the path to the headers. What's going on here, did I miss something during my compilation of the new kernel?

Aug 4, 2010I am fairly new to Linux. My machine is running Debian 5.0.5 with gcc version 4.3. When I try to install the Nvidia QuadroFX 3450 driver I got from the Nvidia web site I get an error saying:
"The compiler used to compile the kernel (gcc 4.1) does not exactly match the current compiler (gcc 4.3)....."
Does this mean my gcc version is too new for the driver? if so, how do I roll back to a older version?

I had to type: /etc/init.d/gdm3 stop The nvidia driver wouldn't install because the 'make' command was missing in a path or something. Now I cannot get the GUI anymore. startx gives me a blank screen rebooting the computer gives me a blank screen. I can only boot in recovery mode. but the nic doesnt work so no internet connection.

Nov 9, 2010I installed Debian Squeeze with no issues. I went to install latest Nvidia driver as done previously with Lenny. Used instructions that worked on lenny from "the trooper" [url]
Downloaded th latest driver for my GeForce 7300 GS vidio card, driver package NVIDIA-Linux-x86-260.19.12.run
Used "method # 2 as described in HOW TO,as it worked perfectly in the past on Lenny. Only syntax I changed was instead of gdm I typed gdm3 as it appears that is the new name for gnome in Squeeze.

Now the trouble showed up, Unfortunatly I can only go off my memory. A question was asked stating that something did not match, it needed a 3 and the driver had a 4 version or somethng of this sort. then it asked if I new what I was doing (and I lied) and selected yes. And whammo, it didn't work. (This question was asked when i did in Lenny and it is working perfectly still on that system). I now can not boot to GUI, I notice when system boots it starts in "S" mode although I select normal boot from grub2.
Not too bad if I got to reinstall as little is on the system. I just want to know what I am missing on the instalation deal or should I be going about this difrently with Squeeze.

I installed the Nvidia installer: NVIDIA-Linux-x8~.86.14-pkg1.run I configured the xorg.conf file and changed the driver from nv to nvidia. I also removed "load dri"
When I use startx I get this error and it won't give me a desktop:
(EE) Failed to load /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/nvidia_drv.so
(EE) Failed to load module "nvidia" (loader failed, 7)
(EE) No drivers available
This is all I remember doing with Lenny. Apparently there is something else I need to do with Squeeze?

May 15, 2010I am trying to install the non-free NVIDIA drivers. I have read the guide here [URL] but what they didn't mention is what to do when you have a graphics card that isn't supported in Debian Lenny's repo driver version. I have the GeForce GTS 250, which isn't listed under the 173.14.09 (the stable repo version) supported VGA cards list. The version I need can be found in Sid and Squeeze (195.36.24 currently). If I add the Sid repository, it seems to work but it returns a whole lot of other unrelated package updates and its really annoying since I don't want to change to Sid yet. So how do I keep the rest of my packages under Debian lenny with only the minimal amount of packages to be under Sid.
I tried APT pinning once but the standard '*' won't work unless if it's alone in the 'Package' line. To clarify, a line like:
Package: nvidia-*
would get ignored.
I would also need a list of required packages and dependencies that must be installed from Debian sid to get this to work. The documentation for APT didn't help much. I can usually get around this problem by using the NVIDIA way but then I can't boot into Gnome GUI at all under other kernel versions except the one I compiled it for, unless I use the terminal to restore the Xorg stock drivers.
Debian :: Run Nvidia-xconfig - Say Driver Not Found
Jun 4, 2010If i run nvidia-xconfig, it will say driver not found, and the next time i boot, it will end up in a terminal. why is it so? (by the way i recovered from that using backup of xorg.conf). And i dont think now the nvidia-driver is present.
