Debian Configuration :: ADSL - Router Should Handle Everything Automatically And Transparently
Feb 3, 2010
The router should handle everything automatically and transparently. All you need to do is make sure that the wireless Ethernet adapters in the laptops can "talk" to the wireless router.

Since this is my first post, before i describe my problem, i'd like to say regrats to all of you for maintaining here such a good support community.
So, here we go: I have a headless Debian box and i want to set it up as a small office router/gateway. On the box i installed a regular NIC and a Viking Traverse ADSL+ Card which gets recognised by the OS as an 8139 ethernet card and has an embedded ADSL+ modem. The modem is accesible through the PHY interface once it gets assigned an IP. Having said that here is the actual setup:
eth0 : Viking Card
eth1 : NIC (this NIC is connected to a switch)
eth0 : 192.168.1.2 (internal modem is on 192.168.1.1)
eth1 : 192.168.1.3
/etc/network/interfaces

Because of the configuration of my house, I need two routers.I have a DLink ADSL router as my main router and the Belkin N1 as my repeater.I have set up the IP address in the Belkin to be 10.1.1.10 - my DLink is 10.1.1.1. I have disable the dhcp in the Belkin and set the DNS as ISP provided. [URL]..I have set the channel to 11 and in the Ubuntu Network Manger I have set the IPV4 to Link Local Only. I can see the Belkin and connect with my PC.but it will not take me through to the internet.

I have a desktop PC running Ubuntu 9.10 and Windows 7, and a Eee PC 701 laptop running EasyPeasy Ubuntu 9.04. I'd like to connect the desktop to the laptop with a wired connection (eth0), then the laptop to my ADSL router using wireless (ath0).
I have a crossover ethernet cable (I bought on ebay). I have set up my laptop with a static IP address on my LAN and it uses OpenDNS.
I have added this to /etc/sysctl.conf on the laptop:
net.ipv4.ip_forward=1
Then I tried this on the laptop:
sudo iptables --table nat --append POSTROUTING --out-interface ath0 -j MASQUERADE
sudo iptables --append FORWARD --in-interface eth0 -j ACCEPT
This is a variation on what I found on other sites describing how to set up a router. I don't understand iptables very well, but I gather that the above two lines should set up forwarding so that traffic from my router to the laptop will be forwarded to the desktop, and vice versa.
But this doesn't work. The connection doesn't even establish between the laptop and the desktop.

I have tried to port forward the SSH port on the ADSL router, that is not working.

I have a PC104 running debian. I have 3 hard drives (in addition to the one booting) mounted in fstab by UUID. I use the options defaults,error=remount-ro. However, this means that when I boot with the hard drives not attached, I have to press Ctrl-D to bypass when the boot discovers the drives are missing. Is there a timeout commandoption I can add to fstab so that it automatically continues booting even if the hard drives are not attached? I could not find anything on a timeout command. (I tried adding timeout=1000 but no-random guess)

I'm going to set up a new linux router for a company, and have to set up bandwidth throttling. They have an unlimited ADSL internet connection which will be shared between 2 businesses, one being them. I will need to set it up so their connection will never be slowed down by the other business. They will both be connected to the same NIC, but will be on different subnets. How would I go about doing this?

What are the pros and cons of various current model ADSL modem routers for use with DD-WRT, OpenWRT or Tomato? There are, of course, hardware compatibility lists (HCLs) for each of these (DD-WRT, OpenWRT and Tomato) but many of the models are no longer available and there are so many that researching them all would be onerous. Many pages on the Internet recommend the WRTG54L and that would be great but it is no longer an option except second user which is increasingly difficult. What are the pros and cons of the various chipsets: ADM5120, AR7, IXP4xx and BCM63xx?

I use an ADSL connection which I 'dial' using the Network Manager. My laptop is connected to the modem through an ethernet cable.
The thing is the place where I stay is prone for power failure. So the modem goes out with the power. It comes back on within a minute when the power is restored but Network Manager doesn't seem to automatically re-establish the connection after it is lost once. I have to manually do it. Hence most of my downloads do not get done.

My router/adsl modem is not connected to a power supply so when power goes and comes the network will do a re-boot. Now the problem is my OpenSUSE network won't come back on! I set the static ip as Autoeth0 to eth0 however when network updates I losse eth0. Why is this happening? Why doesn't the PC simply re-connect? Can I do it via command line?

I have 2 pcs at home. I dont have a switch so I can connect only one PC at a time to my adsl router/modem for internet access. In the past I had successfully connected the two PCs (NIC to NIC) to each other using the same ethernet cable which was supplied with my dlink adsl modem.
Recently the motherboard of on of my PC went bad so I replaced it with a new one. The problem is when I connect the two using the same Ethernet cable they won't connect. The lights on the Ethernet port won't light up. I can still connect both of them to the adsl router (NIC to Router) (one at a time).

I have a registered domain (let say domain.com ) with a web server (www.domain.com) hosted somewhere online.
I handle the mail part in my private network, by giving the MX my WAN IP (111.222.333.444 )and NAT routing mail stuff to the mail server (10.7.167.3) It works fine.
I will have to handle sub-domains (foo.domain.com & bar.domain.com) and also another domain (anotherdomain.com) in my network. In that case NAT routing isn't going to work ...
What do I need to set this up ? I guess I need a DNS server in my network but I'm not sure if there won't be a conflict somewhere with the Registrar's DNS and mine. Or do I have to take the whole DNS of my domain on this new server and make it half public/half private in some way ?

I have an adsl modem acting as a bridge to my router my setup was working well for more than year now , but then the internet went slow . I set the modem back to PPPoE the problem was with the DNS server of the ISP so using ifup i set the dns t 8.8.8.8 (google) the connection is back , but when i set the modem back as a bridge slow internet does the router know that my dns is 8.8.8.8 or i should set the dns on the router ? I can't see an option to set the dns on the router ( i just enter my username and password from the isp to use PPPoE mode ) by the way i called the isp support they kept telling me to restart , i told them i did but i never restarted my pc . I'm sure if i tell them i'm running linux they will blame the os !

I've just bought a Linksys WRT610N router and I ran through various problems during the configuration, that brought some questions. Here is what I did to configure it (following the short manual that I got with the router)1. plugged the router in my modem and in my computer via ethernet cables2. entered its IP address (given on the manual) on my browser and logged in with the factory login3. changed the login passwordAfter this the problems that I have encountered are that:I set up the administration of the router to be disabled via wireless and enabled locally via https, but when saving those settings I either lost the connection (the browser telling me the server was not accessible) or asked confirm a security certificate after being (logically) redirected to the https version of the administration pageafter trying to loggin again, I wasn't able to login via https but only via http even if after logging those parameters were still as I set them (wireless administrative login disabled and local administrative login enabled only via https)
via https when getting something else than "the server is not responding or could be too busy", I was prompted the untrusted connection site, saying that"192.168.1.1 uses an invalid security certificate. The certificate is not trusted because it is self-signed.The certificate is only valid for Linksys. The certificate expired on 01/01/71 01:21. The current time is 19/04/11 22:56.(Error code:sec_error_expired_issuer_certificate)"I noticed that after loosing the connection and not being able to reach the router either with http or https, the only way I was then able to reconnect to it was to go into (I am using firefox 4 on squeeze) edit > preferences > advanced > encryption > view certificates > servers and delete the linksys certificate

I have PCI-device and driver for it - tmk1553b.ko
The problem is to make this device work i have to open terminal after system starts and write
Code: Select allcd /path/to/driver
sudo insmod ./tmk1553b.ko d0=1 t0="TAI" misc=1
But idea is that this PC will work without operator so driver must be loaded automatically. As i realized the solution is to make script but when i try google it shows me how and where to put this script but not how to make it. Also i've tried to put tmk1553b.ko to /lib/modules/2.6.32-5-686/kernel/drivers/misc but it doesn't work.
Debian 6.0.10 (squeeze)
Kernel 2.6.32-5-686

So I have a router that I've gotten from my ISP, which seems to run a hardened, custom version of OpenWRT. By that I mean it's read-only and has a lot of files mostly in RAM. So putting custom firmware on it is not an option for me right now, as it's by only router. Actually, it's not just a router, it's an Actiontek modem/router combo.
So anyway, lets say I have a machine on my LAN and I want to basically SSH into a box by hostname. Now the thing is, I prefer using OpenDNS (previously OpenNIC) as my DNS, and so I don't use my router as my nameserver, though I could do that.
So how do I connect to my machine by hostname? I would prefer a solution that does not use Avahi/Zeroconf or editing the hosts file. People have said setting up a local DNS server might be okay, but I'd have to do that for every machine I'd want added to my network. Kind of almost as bad as editing a static hosts file. I use really want to use DHCP over static IP assigning, and the one on my router is not as advanced, so I can't use my hosts file. And also,
So is Zeroconf the only solution? I'm not sure how to set up Zeroconf. Do you just install Avahi?
I want a simple, almost Arch-linux solution, lean and clean, using only the most minimal software. I don't care how much configuring I'd have to do, as long as it's going to stay reliable as well.

I have just setup a debian box, and I want to be able to login to the machine remotely.Currently I have the following setup:Cable Modem -> Netgear Router (DHCP to outside world) -> Debian Box (DHCP for internal network)As I under stand it I have to set my Debian Box to use a static IP, but from there I di not know where to go.Also since my cable modem IP is dynamic, is there some way to have that the debian box get the IP address for the outside world, and e-mail it to my gmail account when it changes, or least every X hours?

There are only 2 lines now in /etc/network/interfacesauto loiface lo inet loopbackWhat should I do to get the NM to look for and connect wireless automatically at start up

I'm running squeeze testing. I have noticed an issue with the way NetworkManager acts when the wireless connection is dropped. I believe it should automatically reconnect but it immediately puts up a dialog requesting me to enter the wifi password. This dialog stays indefinitely until I intervene and click "OK" (the password from the previous successful connection is still there). I would think that something as basic as wireless networking should not require 24 hour human interaction to stay connected. I have considered a cron job checking the network status and restarting it if necessary, but there is a configuration change or something else I can do to resolve this.
