View 2 Replies View RelatedSucceeded in connecting to internet using my wll phone. I can now connect using 'wvdial' command in root terminal. But I want to connect through terminal. I tried 'sudo wvdial' command. Then I am asked for my password. But I cannot type my password there. When I type, nothing appears on the terminal window. Ofcourse there's no problem with my keyboard.

To my understanding, this means that the disk is beginning to fail, and should be replaced..
Short story..I have about 35.000 images on these disks... (shared on network, as a samba share with PCs using Picasa) I've doing backup to 2 separate USB disk, and sometimes I connect a third usb disk and transfer to this aswell. I'm worried now that "some" of my image/data might have been lost - due to the 2 lines above. (checking if something is missing, of the 35.000 images is not easy.. and I have not made any txt file with all files/names/size og the images -...I see now that I also should create such a list, and not just take backup)
How critical is this "Offline uncorrectable sectors" and how can I check/do something about it ?
I've created LVMs, and use this after I have added new disks to the system. df -h give me some lines, and one of them looks like this:(this is the system which holds backup files - and I want to disconnect it from time to time to create a duplicate backup)
/dev/mapper/backup-backup 147G 123G 17G 89% /media/backup
Problem: When I disconnect this drive, the system will not boot. Gives me the "enter password for root" or click control+D to continue. How can I get around this check - if the disk fails to load, or have been taken out.
I need to copy files over from a Solaris 2.6 box to my machine running Centos 5.3. I have to use RCP since the Solaris box is so old that is the only inter-machine copy command available.How do I enable rshd services on my centos box? startx /usr/bin/startkdeBut using it disables sound in KDE (Sound is working fine in GNOME). It doesn't sound for anything like login sound, totem, mplayer or any other playerBut when I press Alt+Ctrl+F1 to change to virtual console, the playback resumes from where it was in time and when coming back Alt+Ctrl+F7 and the time in totem (or any other player) doesn't move. While log out also it doesn't play logout sound and doesn't logout, so I have to press Ctrl+Alt+F1 so that logout sound play then it exits.When starting KDE by kdm or gdm, the sound works normally. But I don't want to login again using kdm or gdm and not to use root user to start kdm or gdm.I don't know what is the difference between when KDE is started by startx or by kdm/gdm where the same user login in kdm/gdm as that for startx
Now i am in the CLI , opting CTRL+ALT+F7 how do i proceed with typing, in command prompt ?
Observation: I see the cursor blinking....It doesn't take anything typed.
I remember a friend of mine was able to get my computer to boot under CUI, and the command 'start x' started the GUI. with booting up my computer through CUI.

I have a RedHat linux server box connected to LinkSys router through ethernet port. I've assigned a static IP to the Linux box, which is out of range with router's DHCP range.
The Linux box has Apache, JBOSS, SVN and several other services installed, but none of these services are accessible through the WLAN. However, SSH and SFTP are accessible from WLAN.
Another interesting observation is that if I open a browser on the linux box (by exporting the DISPLAY to Exceed on my laptop on the WLAN) and point the browser's address bar to localhost:80 or localhost:9080, then I can access these services!!.. So, I suspect that something is wrong with accessing these services from a client on WLAN and I am looking for a solution for the same.
I was interested in ubuntu, but was unable to enter the site from work, provider said that from his side everything is OK, problems should not be, may be banned my ip address I'm first time here it's not my fault if it is,

The database have a scheduled job to fetch some files from another server using ftp, and herein lies the problem.he job runs a pl/sql that runs the function in an (by us compiled) external libraryThe ftp-functionality itself is done by using libncftp and it's API's.The process starts correctly, but then trying to login to the actual ftp host, ncftp only reports "Unknown username/password" (which is not the case).I have the exact same code in an executable and when run from an interactive shell, it works fine.So the only thing I can come up with, is there are differences when the process is started by Oracle, rather then being ordinary" process.And I am stuck.If there are any environment variables, paths etc missing when running the extproc-process, how do I find out which?Because the real problem is NOT wrong user or password.
View 8 Replies View Relatedi have installed apache and bind on my server and i've also registered a dynamic domain through dyndns as jan27.dyndns.biz. i am able to successfully host my own webpages using this method.
then i registered a domain name (lets call it "blah.com") through namescheap.com and have registered my nameserver to my ip address. after reconfiguring the my external zones in bind and restarted my services, i am unable to reach my webpages through the new domain name.. www.blah.com and blah.com would lead me to a opendns.com page but interestingly ns1.blah.com loads my webpages successfully.
Currently using oracle 9i with 3 database(maindb,arist,samp) in redhat 5.3 server .I want to stop 2 database "maindb" and "samp" manually ( in XP or Vista we can stop service oraclemaindb and oraclesamp ), but in redhat i dont know how to stop services and how to see currently running oracle services.

I am trying to get vmware to work in ubuntu 10.04(x64) and it just doesn't seem to work. I've made it work in debian(x64) before with the same installer but here I get errors.
installation seems to go fine with the installation script: VMware-Workstation-Full-7.0.0-203739.x86_64
But when I start it for the first time I get the message before you can run VMware, several modules must be compiled and loaded into the running kernel. and then I can press Cancel or _Install (yes with the underscore) when I press _Install it first stops the VMware Services and then says:

-vmware blocking filesystem(successful)
-virtual machine communication interface(error)
-vmci sockets(error)
after that it says:

Since Feb 12, I am unable to enter accented characters on any application. I have a Spanish (Latin American) keyboard, where I have to press the accent key and then the vowel I want to have an accent. What happens is this: I press the diacritic key, and then the vowel, but NOTHING appears. Exceptionally, Java apps (eg. Netbeans) show a square with a question mark inside: Something else is strange. Normally, if you press the accent key twice, the diacritic appears by itself, ie. (I copy-pasted that). So, this works for the following accents: But not for these: The letters show fine on my machine, eg. in Nautilus, in Firefox; I am just unable to type them. There were some updates done by yum on the day this started happening, but I have no idea if that's the cause of all this... I tried undoing the update transaction but it failed.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI made an standard CentOS 5.3 installation and I didn't install any AFS (Andrew File System) rpm or did any AFS configuration or any additional rpm, but I was going to use several ports between 7000-7009 and then realised that those ports were being used by afs3-* services as for instance, asf3-kaserver (kerberos authentication, which I didn't installed either). I wish to disable or uninstall those services but I don't know how and didn't find too much information about it. Why are those services appearing there?

I went to Dolphin -> Settings -> Configure Dolphin -> Services -> Download New Services and from there I installed KDE CDEmu Emulator and MountISO. But neither of them is showing up in actual context menu. Neither in Dolphin -> Settings -> Configure Dolphin -> Services for that matter. I tried to install them as normal user and as a root. I went to have a peak in /usr/share/kde4/services/ServiceMenus/ but they aren't there as well... It's just me or lots of things seems to be not quite working in 11.3?

All of them got a nice green tick except the Virtual Network Device

I cant access that log file. Set the folder to read only, and any contents, but theres no file in there.
How do I solve this so I can run WMware?
I haven't been active in Debian for two years back when Lenny was still in 'testing' and noticed that for some reason it is no longer protocol to restart network services using the 'init.d' scripts. I also noticed the same for Ubuntu (which I don't use or could care about) and am trying to understand what is the correct way now for Debian and what changed? I did a search on Google but didn't turn up any results. Is it no longer correct to run:

Vmware tells me it cannot start services.I believe the issue is tied to permissions because the message indicated the log with the full details was located in /tmp/vmware-root/setup-4772.log but when I go there I receive a message telling me I do not have permission to the directory and there's a lock symbol on the directory from the File Browser utility.What do I need to do to unlock the folder and get vmware working again ?

We started the vmware service successfully, however, while we do ifconfig, we did not see vmnet1, and we do ifconfig vmnet1 up, we see that vmnet1:no such interface.
I broke sudo when I wrongly edited a file in /etc/sudoers.d in vi(did not use visudo :-().I read that I could fix the same by rebooting into the 'Recovery Mode' by selecting the same from the grub menu.
However I'd earlier disabled the showing of the grub menu by editing /etc/default/grub. As a result I can't seem to go into recovery mode to fix my broken sudo.
