Dec 18, 2009
I need to copy files over from a Solaris 2.6 box to my machine running Centos 5.3. I have to use RCP since the Solaris box is so old that is the only inter-machine copy command available. How do I enable rshd services on my centos box? Detailed explanation would be apperciated since I am from the ssh generation.

this is probably something trivial but how can I auto start gdm on CentOS 5.4??I had to perform a text install due to Anaconda having some issues as I'm running Cent on Sun's VirtualBox.I have tried to add chkconfig --add gdm which didn't work, also there is no init.d script either for gdm so not sure if it's in a directory somewhere or if I have to create it manually??IF I run simply gdm from teh cli then everything is ok and starts fine....

I made an standard CentOS 5.3 installation and I didn't install any AFS (Andrew File System) rpm or did any AFS configuration or any additional rpm, but I was going to use several ports between 7000-7009 and then realised that those ports were being used by afs3-* services as for instance, asf3-kaserver (kerberos authentication, which I didn't installed either). I wish to disable or uninstall those services but I don't know how and didn't find too much information about it. Why are those services appearing there?

Just installed 5.3/gnome.I am on pc/desktop with only wired internet connection via routerto dsl-modem. The OS sets-up the "eth0" automatically. For just this type of setup what services can I disable and uncheck ? In System>Admin.>Services I unchecked and disabled bluetooth, isdn, pcscd and sshd. Should I disable sendmail, avahi-daemon, portmap, rpcidmapd, rpcgssd and.apmd(no laptop)? Goal is to minimize unneeded services and improve security. The wiki article on securing CentOS did not cover this.Under System>Security Level Configuration I allow ftp,Mail(smtp), and WWW(HTTP). Is the ftp allowed ok for my pc/desktop?

I installed Centos 5.5 on a home PC to be used remotely.
All server daemons work fine but only start if the user is logged in.
How do I set the SSH server to start whenever the PC is turned on, rather than when the user is logged in? I read the chkconfig man page online but couldn't find anything.
Plus I put a script in my startup services to be run whenever the computer boots (I'm guessing when the users logs in). How do I go about setting that to run too whenever the system boots instead?

Like sendmail, samba, etc etc. These services take memory and are not in use. I does not know how can I make my server only for squid proxy service by removing unwanted services?

After upgrading Centos 5.4 cluster nodes to 5.5 all virtual services failed to start. All virtual services are marked as 'failed'. The reason: new /usr/share/cluster/vm.sh requires 'which', but this is not reflected in rgmanager-2.0.52-6.el5.centos.
Solution: run 'yum -y install which' on all nodes, and reboot cluster. Hope that will save somebody hours of downtime.

On my CentOS 5.4 box I run dns, ssh, and smtp servers. This box also has to be able to resolve and browse websites. So basically it needs iptable rules for
TCP 22 25 80 443
UDP 53
My question is, which of these services work nicely with connection tracking? I'm a little confused about how connection tracking works. For example say this iptables rule for smtp
Code:
iptables -A INPUT -s 0/0 --sport 513:65535 -d $myip --dport 25 -j ACCEPT
versus
Code:
iptables -A INPUT -s 0/0 --sport 513:65535 -d $myip --dport 25 -m state --state NEW,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT
So with connection tracking what exactly does it do that my first iptables rule does not do?
Also for centos is that port range correct? 2.6 Linux kernel randomly chooses a port 513-65535 when it connects to an external smtp server or say browses a site.

I recentlly updated my Centos 5.5 to 5.6 usnig yum update, and since then, the QT4 designer cannot be started. If I'm running it (I installed it from source to /usr/local/qt..) the command stuck and nothing happens. The wierd thing is that if I'm running "strace /usr/local/qt/bin/designer4" the program starts.

When ever I have an issue with our LDAP server (which I was able to fix) we see the following errors in /var/log/messages and it causes problems with our services running on that box, e.g. httpd, nrpe, xinetd, etc. Aug 8 17:44:42 hostname httpd: nss_ldap: failed to bind to LDAP server ldap://serveraddress/: Can't contact LDAP server Aug 8 17:44:42 hostname httpd: nss_ldap: reconnecting to LDAP server (sleeping 64 seconds)... I am only wanting to authenticate SSH and Sudo and not services like httpd, nrpe, xinetd etc.

I have a fresh install of Cent OS 5.4 and am having a problem with Openoffice application not starting up, word processor, spreadsheet, etc. none of them start.
When I try to open word processor, It just loads for a bit says "starting word processor", then closes.
I uninstalled and reinstalled through add/remove software tool and that didn't help. I read somewhere that selinux causes problems with it so I disabled selinux, restarted, and that didn't change anything.

I have a dual-monitor setup. I have some programs which I would like to start automatically. I each one to start up full screen on a particular monitor, in a particular workspace. Then I can use the workspace facilities to easily switch between the programs, and they will always appear on the correct monitor, in the correct workspace. (At least one of the programs (VMWare Workstation) does not seem to be startable using the facilities to save the current session on logout.)

I would like the samba service (smb) to start on boot.
In the terminal (as root) I did:
/sbin/chkconfig smb --add
But after a reboot the samba service still doesn't start automatically. Is there something I'm doing wrong here?
-- Quick side question: Most of my experience is from debian and I'm confused as to why I have to add the /sbin path to most of my commands.
