Debian :: Unable To Restart Network Services Using The 'init.d' Scripts

Mar 17, 2010

I haven't been active in Debian for two years back when Lenny was still in 'testing' and noticed that for some reason it is no longer protocol to restart network services using the 'init.d' scripts. I also noticed the same for Ubuntu (which I don't use or could care about) and am trying to understand what is the correct way now for Debian and what changed? I did a search on Google but didn't turn up any results. Is it no longer correct to run:

Code:

/etc/init.d/network restart

Debian Configuration :: DHCP Client Don't Start With /etc/init.d/network Restart?

May 28, 2011

I installed the latest Debian on a computer to make a backup appliance. No GUI.When the computer starts, everything is okay. The DHCP client is running, the network interface have an address, fine.If I do a /etc/init.d/network restart (or stop + start), no more DHCP client. t is stopped when the interface is down. When the interface is up, I have to start it manually.1 - is it normal ?2 - isn't ifup's job to launch the dhcp client ?3 - can /etc/network/if-up.d be the right place to resolve this ?

Ubuntu :: Virtual Network Device - Unable To Start Services

All of them got a nice green tick except the Virtual Network Device

Unable to start services. See log file /tmp/vmware-root/setup-2986.log for details.

I cant access that log file. Set the folder to read only, and any contents, but theres no file in there.

How do I solve this so I can run WMware?

Ubuntu :: Suddenly Init Smashed - Cron Not Working - Services Not Starting - Vpn Odd

Oct 25, 2010

I installed an LAMP Server on 10.10. Additionally a simple Sambaserver and a VPN is integrated. Since 3 days I look at some strange behaviour:

Code: sudo init 6 does not take effect. Nothing happens. Code: sudo reboot is working, but all seems to be so ropy. It takes a significant while, before ssh-session is finally terminated. After the system comes up again, the vpn-client gets not the same IP-address by DHCP-server, but the next following of dhcp-range. That is strange, because no other dhcp-client is busy. After a second reboot I get the correct first IP-address of the dhcp-range. That is reproducible.

cron is not working any more. None of my jobs is being triggered. Nothing is logged in /var/log/syslog any more. Services (apache2, mysql, smbd) are not running at the start. I have to run them up manually. Seems like init is somehow smashed? What is your guess? What futher information do I have to provide for analysis?

Ubuntu :: Init: Failed To Spawn Network-manager Main Process: Unable To Execute: No Such File Or Directory

May 27, 2010

I just updated from 9.04 to 9.10 (it's a long story, and I still can't go beyond 2.30).The update got rid of WICD, which is what I used and installed network-manager. Network-manager was not working at all, so I uninstalled it again and installed WICD. I could connect perfectly and had no problems. However, now the computer hangs during boot, saying that init can't start network-manager. I assume that something went wrong during the uninstalling process, since it wasn't updated.

This is the message: init: Failed to spawn network-manager main process: unable to execute: No such file or directory.

So how do I update it or manually change it so it stops requesting network-manager?

Debian :: Delay Init.d Script Until Network Filesystem Is Available?

Oct 27, 2010

I'm having some difficulty starting a service from an init.d script. It relies on the availability of a network filesystem (glusterfs) which is mounted from fstab. The service starts before the filesystem is up, and crashes.I've tried adding "# Required-Start: remote_fs" to the service init.d script, and delaying it by changing the ordering with "update-rc.d service defaults 90", but neither seems to work. If I add a "sleep 10" to the script, that works, but it feels wrong. Is there some way to get the ordering right? To delay starting the service until after everything in fstab is ready to g

Jan 21, 2010

installed lenny and am trying to install brother dcp7010 again:

1) i can't start CUPS server with /etc/init.d/cups restart "file not found", there is a cups@ link in /etc/init.d.

2) when i install dcp7010 cupswrapper

dpkg -i cupswrapperDCP7010-2.0.1-2.i386.de
it ends with
" lpinfo: Verbindung zum Server nicht mglich: Verbindungsaufbau abgelehnt
lpadmin: Verbindung zum Server nicht mglich: Verbindungsaufbau abgelehnt"
(connection to server not possible, refused)

3)[URL] doesn't work.

4)foomatic-gui can't find the installed dcp7010 lpr-driver

brdcp7010lpr-2.0.1-1.i386.deb, (a couple of days ago it did)

This is frustrating because it worked in etch and worked for awhile in lenny. The dcp7010-scanner does work.

Debian Installation :: No Network Driver After First Restart?

Aug 1, 2011

I'm trying to install Wheezy on a Thinkpad T23. want to use Fluxbox, so during installation I uncheck the graphics options because I can install X and fluxbox later. After the install, the first time it boots up it can connect to the wired network and it will download things. But, if I reboot then it somehow loses its ability to connect to any wired network (and the T23 doesn't have built in wireless, so it obviously can't connect to wifi). there something that I can do to get ethernet back? Or, is there a way to, while I'm still on the first reboot, permanently install the ethernet drivers?I'm finally trying tmove away from Windows because a friend happened to show me his laptop which was running the free and open alternative to OneNote (Xournal) that I've been needing.

Ubuntu :: How To Restart Network Adapter (not Service) Without Restart?

I have a suspend problem in my laptop. Sometimes, when resuming from suspend, the network adapter is down (that is, the network does not work and the light of the network adapter is off). Restarting the network service doesn't work, because I think that the system forgot about the hardware, and probably the driver should be reloaded.Does anyone knows how to do that?(ps. /etc/init.d/networking restart does not work, because the hardware driver is not being recognized anymore).

OpenSUSE Network :: Literally ODD - Network Services Don't Work Every Second Boot?

Sep 14, 2010

I have an OpenSuSE 11.1 in vmWare ESX and every other boot I can't access any running network services (ssh, webmin, qmail, mysql, ...) from outside. I just need to login, reboot and voila - network services are working.I gradually updated to 11.2 and 11.3 by following the wiki with success but this problem remained. So I reverted to snapshot of 11.1 and now I would like to identify and solve the problem here first.I also looked at /var/log/messages /var/log/boot.msg /var/log/lastlog but can't find anything usefull. I will now compare those files from the working and non-working boot but meanwhile someone already has an idea or experience what could be wrong?

Debian Multimedia :: GDM Goes To Tty On Restart / Doesn't Restart

Whenever I choose "Restart" from the GDM screen, GDM appears to shutdown, and the first TTY is displayed with a login prompt at the bottom (assuming I haven't used that TTY). I am by no estimation a patient individual, but I waited a solid minute or two for something to happen, but nothing ever did. I end up logging in as root on that TTY and running "shutdown -r now" to get the job done. This is a shared computer, and ideally any user should be able to perform shutdown options graphically from GDM.The only mentioned workaround doesn't apply to me as I am using the nvidia driver, not intel.

Networking :: Unable To Connect To Services On Box Through WLAN?

Jun 20, 2010

I have a RedHat linux server box connected to LinkSys router through ethernet port. I've assigned a static IP to the Linux box, which is out of range with router's DHCP range.

The Linux box has Apache, JBOSS, SVN and several other services installed, but none of these services are accessible through the WLAN. However, SSH and SFTP are accessible from WLAN.

Another interesting observation is that if I open a browser on the linux box (by exporting the DISPLAY to Exceed on my laptop on the WLAN) and point the browser's address bar to localhost:80 or localhost:9080, then I can access these services!!.. So, I suspect that something is wrong with accessing these services from a client on WLAN and I am looking for a solution for the same.
