I am building CentOs servers on a regular basis.The last one was to be barebones with services. I wasn't sure which ones to turn off in "Setup".I Googled My dilemma and got conflicting info (Imagine that!) The customer complained of too many things running.
View 7 RepliesHave been working most of the day on this usb full install (Jesiie xfce) trying to make it leaner/faster and trying to get rid of minor annoyances like "watchdog: watchdog0 is not shutting down" (couldn't btw), finally managed to disable "You have mail" by commenting out "session optional pam_ mail.so standard" in /etc/pam.d/login. Every little change registers in terms of seconds of boot time saved and how the system responds because, well, i'm booting from a usb 2 drive.Followed some suggestions from "Reduce Debian", removed cups-common, some foreign language locales and man pages. what i can safely do with systemctl.

View 6 Replies View RelatedThe wireless connection works fine. The wireless switch automatically turns itself on every time I start the computer. However, after turning it off, I can't ever turn it on again unless I restart the computer. And because of this, the wireless connection is disabled until the next time I start the computer.I don't think this is a hardware problem because the switch can be turned on and off, although not in the way I expect.
I'm using ubuntu 9.10 on an Acer Aspire 4740G. The command [lspci | grep Network] shows Atheros Communications Inc. AR928X Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) (rev 01). the [rfkill list] command shows (when the switch is on)

Hard blocked: no
and, as expected, shows (when the switch is turned off)

I just want to be able to turn the switch on or off at any time I want as long as the computer is still on.
I am currently running the xen (64 bit) kernel, but want to move to the non xen kernel(64 bit) while retaining my carefully crafted system. I tried this once before by unticking the "virtualisation" and it removed the xen kernel, leaving me with nothing to boot from.

trying to get numlock to get turned on before login,preferably at GRUB but at least before the login prompt. I have tried numlockx but as I have no GUI it does not work. How do I do this?
Just loaded Centos 5.6 on my old Lenovo t400. Works great with on exception. Can't get the wireless turned on. It's an Intel PRO/wireless 5100 AGN (shiloh).
The external switch is on. FN+F5 does nothing.
It's in the device list but does not appear in Network Connections.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI made an standard CentOS 5.3 installation and I didn't install any AFS (Andrew File System) rpm or did any AFS configuration or any additional rpm, but I was going to use several ports between 7000-7009 and then realised that those ports were being used by afs3-* services as for instance, asf3-kaserver (kerberos authentication, which I didn't installed either). I wish to disable or uninstall those services but I don't know how and didn't find too much information about it. Why are those services appearing there?

I went to Dolphin -> Settings -> Configure Dolphin -> Services -> Download New Services and from there I installed KDE CDEmu Emulator and MountISO. But neither of them is showing up in actual context menu. Neither in Dolphin -> Settings -> Configure Dolphin -> Services for that matter. I tried to install them as normal user and as a root. I went to have a peak in /usr/share/kde4/services/ServiceMenus/ but they aren't there as well... It's just me or lots of things seems to be not quite working in 11.3?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently installed CentOS 5.3. There I select desktop package (Gnome and KDE) didn't select server in CentOS 5.3 installation gui. I want to connect to the windows active directory domain in our company. To do this I want to run the samba service. But it is not listed in the services. (#service --status-all) but I cant see the samba config file smb.conf why I cant run this other services smbd, nmbd is also not listed. But winbind is listed and I started it.

I installed Centos 5.5 on a home PC to be used remotely.
All server daemons work fine but only start if the user is logged in.
How do I set the SSH server to start whenever the PC is turned on, rather than when the user is logged in? I read the chkconfig man page online but couldn't find anything.
Plus I put a script in my startup services to be run whenever the computer boots (I'm guessing when the users logs in). How do I go about setting that to run too whenever the system boots instead?
I've installed CentOS 5.x (64 bit) on a Hyper-V Server R2. When I trying to install integration serices I get an error:

I have centos 5.5 64bit installed. When I start the httpd service I get the above message. The message is bogus because the server is running and web pages work. Is there a fix out there to resolve this?

View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter upgrading Centos 5.4 cluster nodes to 5.5 all virtual services failed to start. All virtual services are marked as 'failed'. The reason: new /usr/share/cluster/vm.sh requires 'which', but this is not reflected in rgmanager-2.0.52-6.el5.centos.
Solution: run 'yum -y install which' on all nodes, and reboot cluster. Hope that will save somebody hours of downtime.
Having my Diploma Final Project on setting up a virtual mail server within Local Area Network (LAN) only. I had follow this how-to [URL] and complete up to squirrealmail web mail. I added two new user to try on sending and receiving mail. It works. I run CentOS on VMplayer. I using my laptop to do all the stuff, the laptop default OS is windows 7, I install VM player on it and run CentOS inside the VM Player.
I want to do testing on Windows 7 side by installing Thunderbird email client program, I want to connect to mail server with SMTP, IMAP/POP3 using the email service. I have problem while setting up user account on Thunderbird, Thunderbird seems like cannot detect my CentOS mail server. How? Do I have to do any other configuration on CentOS? Any DNS? Port number for IMAP, POP3 or SMTP?

Also for centos is that port range correct? 2.6 Linux kernel randomly chooses a port 513-65535 when it connects to an external smtp server or say browses a site.
When ever I have an issue with our LDAP server (which I was able to fix) we see the following errors in /var/log/messages and it causes problems with our services running on that box, e.g. httpd, nrpe, xinetd, etc. Aug 8 17:44:42 hostname httpd: nss_ldap: failed to bind to LDAP server ldap://serveraddress/: Can't contact LDAP server Aug 8 17:44:42 hostname httpd: nss_ldap: reconnecting to LDAP server (sleeping 64 seconds)... I am only wanting to authenticate SSH and Sudo and not services like httpd, nrpe, xinetd etc.
