I am a Mac/ Windows user, forced to use Linux for my college work. I do not know where to enter commands like $ sudo /usr/etc/eth0 mvntz -do4i or how to make them work
I had a problem - the Wi-fi card in my laptop was not working. All the forums were useless. They wanted me to READ about wireless networking !
Finally a good friend solved the problem in a simple way : it appears Ubuntu has not installed the drivers for my Broadcom wireless card since it was not open source. I had to download it myself. Here is how : Go to System menu on the top bar. Choose administration/ hardware devices. Tell it to activate the device. It will download the drivers through the cable attached to DSL modem and install.
Then clicked the network icon, selected edit connections, and entered my wireless network name and password. This solved all problems.
Why doesn't Linux give me a warning that the driver for something is not yet installed ? When I was struggling with the network setup wizard for the whole day, there was no clue about the missing driver.

I am not a new user of linux but the last time I used linux was five years ago.
I am having a hard time using less. It dont want to accept commands immediately. I need to press 'Enter' to accept the command.
Like if I press 'q' to quit, it will echo 'q' and dont do anything. I have to press 'Enter' to make it quit. Same with other commands.
I am using Windows PuTTy 0.60 with ssh to connect to linux machine.
The linux system is: Linux <removed> 2.6.18-53.el5 #1 SMP Wed Oct 10 16:34:19 EDT 2007 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
The less version is :
less 394
Copyright (C) 1984-2005 Mark Nudelman
I dont have any problem with vim and more. Only with less.
I have also tried changing the TERM from xterm to vt100. But still the same problem with less.

I've had a server setup working perfectly for the last 2 years. Today we installed a newer version of postgresql and recompiled apache/php.
Postgresql will not start now.
"service postgresql start" = /var/lib/pgsql/data is missing. Use "service postgresql initdb" to initialize the cluster first. To initdb we need to be as user postgres.
"su - postgres" = "no file or directory"
In /etc/passwd = postgres:x:26:26:PostgreSQL Server:/var/lib/pgsql:/bin/bash
how i can login as postgres user and enter these commands?

I bought a new laptop in which a Linux Suse Enterprise Desktop is installed,After that, I installed Windows 7 by the common method: Using Gparted CD, but the problem is that after the end of the installing of Windows 7, the latter became as the first only OS installed in, and the grub of Linux Suse has been disabled , and the only way to enable the grab (in order to use dual-boot, switch between Suse and Win7) is to use the Linux Suse CD and enter to it for enter some prompt command (as u know), but I didn't get the CD with the attached pack, I got instead of it, a System Recovery CD, the only option shown in the first page is to restore the system and not to enter it
Hence my question: How can I enter to linuxSuse to enable the grub to activate the dual-boot?Can't I enable the dual-boot from command line of Windows 7?

Today, I was downloading some stuff from online. I left for a few minutes and came back to find that someone had hit my loose power cord, causing the computer to restart. When I completed the reboot (It always says "Insert system disk and press enter" after checking CD drives), and had it load OpenSuSE 11.3 Failsafe (Regular won't work for me), it loaded into Teal (BASH, Command Prompt, Kommand, whatever you want to call it). At first, I thought maybe I screwed up and told it to load into that. But, I tried again, and it did the same. I tried using Non-Failsafe, and got the same results. I am able to edit, add, or remove programs from the Linux partition, though.

Whenever I start a browser, it asks me to enter my root password because of some pgp keyring issue. I set my password as standard in seahorse, but no change.
The Gnome3 interface sometimes lags very noticeably.
Packagekit constantly blocks my zypper use, and it won't shut down. Not even after I log out and log in again. I tried just removing everything related to packagekit, but that just breaks everything.
Searching for repositories is a pain and there are too many different ones and I never know which one is the latest and how these will be upgraded in the future. Zypper itself is awesome, everything else about package and repo management is not.
I can't uninstall applications properly. I remove them via zypper, and when I do a distro update they get added back in. (gnome games for example)
Whenever I install or search for anything in zypper, I get hundreds of these errors: GConf Error: Failed to contact configuration server; the most common cause is a missing or misconfigured D-Bus session bus daemon. See GConf configuration system for information. (Details - 1: Failed to get connection to session: The connection is closed)..but it still finds something.

I have a usb serial adapter and was happily using minicom with it under openSUSE 11.2. I've upgraded to openSUSE 11.3 and I can only use minicom with this serial adapter as root. I had previously had problems writing to /var/lock under openSUSE 11.2 which I worked around by changing the minicom config to use /tmp as its lock file location.
Unfortunately my laptop doesn't have a built in serial port so I can't tell if its a general problem or something specific to the /dev/ttyUSB0 device. This is the output I get when I run minicom with my regular user account. I get the same output whether the lock file location is set to /tmp or /var/lock
Code:minicom usb0 Device /dev/ttyUSB0 lock failed: Permission denied. Before I started tinkering my user belonged to the following groups groups=16(dialout),33(video),100(users) I've since added 5(tty),14(uucp),21(console) but still no joy.

It happens like 50% of my Suse 11.2 startups, when I type in my password at login screen and hit enter, Gnome do not start, i can only see the green blank screen,or sometimes it start to show only my custom wallpaper and nothing more, when i try ctrl+alt+backspacex2 and login again everything seems to work fine, but what could be wrong ? is it a hardware issue ? Moreover, sometimes when I want to shutdown my laptop and click the shutdown button, suse do logout, but instead of turning off the laptop , it brings me to login screen, clicking the shutdown button at login screen makes my hdd lamp blink and thats all.

I want to turn off CPU throttling, and I notice how each time opensuse boots up, it imposes it.
I would like to know where it does this. I suspect - but actually I don't really know - if it's the HAL daemon that does this. Could be.
In any case, rather than have to key it in each time, I put the relevant commands (cpufreq-set) in boot.local. No effect.
I suspect boot.local might not be the best place for such a heavy duty command like this one.
Are there any there places I could put it so that it executes automatically?

I have just installed 11.2 i686 on two machines, one virtual and one physical. Both have been set to start in runlevel 3. For some reason it seems that my installations have missed some step in the process, because the system cannot find several rather important commands, eg. init and ifconfig.this is what I get if I try to run ifconfig:
Code:
user@computer:~> sudo ifconfig
sudo: ifconfig: command not found

Sorry I know the answer is in here somewhere but I don't understand what the command is on how to install my drivers from my thumb drive.

I've been using opensuse 11.2 and windows xp at parallel. After I decide to reinstall windows, I got the error saying "invalid partition table" after the first restart of windows xp installation.
I tried to use windows system recovery console and committing fixmbr and fixboot commands, but didn't work.
After all, i boot with opensuse livecd to run the grub and got my opensuse back.
How can I installed windows on a opensuse installed system? My plan was first to install windows xp, then opensuse again.
