I recently installed two 160Gb hdds, and use these with striped LVM technics.
now I came across /var/log/messages these lines... :-/
Feb 14 16:50:44 centos55 smartd[4826]: Device: /dev/sdf, 34 Offline uncorrectable sectors
Feb 14 16:50:44 centos55 smartd[4826]: Device: /dev/sdg, 14 Offline uncorrectable sectors
To my understanding, this means that the disk is beginning to fail, and should be replaced..
Short story..I have about 35.000 images on these disks... (shared on network, as a samba share with PCs using Picasa) I've doing backup to 2 separate USB disk, and sometimes I connect a third usb disk and transfer to this aswell. I'm worried now that "some" of my image/data might have been lost - due to the 2 lines above. (checking if something is missing, of the 35.000 images is not easy.. and I have not made any txt file with all files/names/size og the images -...I see now that I also should create such a list, and not just take backup)
How critical is this "Offline uncorrectable sectors" and how can I check/do something about it ?

I just installed CentOS 5.4 (x86_64) and I encrypted my /home /var /tmp and /mnt/Storage partitions, along with my swap partition. My only complaint is that when I boot, I have to enter my password 4 times, and I did not pick a short password. The password is the same for all 4 partitions. Is there anyway I can set things up so I can just type my password once? Once I get everything set up, I won't be booting that often, but right now it is a PIA.

For example, what I have now as a root user on CentOS 5.5:
# setsebool
bash: setsebool: command not found
I need to enter /usr/sbin/setsebool to get it working
The same is with some other commands:
# service httpd restart
bash: service: command not found
And so on. I know, that I need to add path somewhere, as I did it before on FreeBSD. But I don't know where?

I recently installed KDE in my ubuntu 10.10. To access KDE, I want to use
startx /usr/bin/startkdeBut using it disables sound in KDE (Sound is working fine in GNOME). It doesn't sound for anything like login sound, totem, mplayer or any other playerBut when I press Alt+Ctrl+F1 to change to virtual console, the playback resumes from where it was in time and when coming back Alt+Ctrl+F7 and the time in totem (or any other player) doesn't move. While log out also it doesn't play logout sound and doesn't logout, so I have to press Ctrl+Alt+F1 so that logout sound play then it exits. When starting KDE by kdm or gdm, the sound works normally. But I don't want to login again using kdm or gdm and not to use root user to start kdm or gdm.I don't know what is the difference between when KDE is started by startx or by kdm/gdm where the same user login in kdm/gdm as that for startx

I made an standard CentOS 5.3 installation and I didn't install any AFS (Andrew File System) rpm or did any AFS configuration or any additional rpm, but I was going to use several ports between 7000-7009 and then realised that those ports were being used by afs3-* services as for instance, asf3-kaserver (kerberos authentication, which I didn't installed either). I wish to disable or uninstall those services but I don't know how and didn't find too much information about it. Why are those services appearing there?

So I want to get mount/umount option under right click services menu. I went to Dolphin -> Settings -> Configure Dolphin -> Services -> Download New Services and from there I installed KDE CDEmu Emulator and MountISO. But neither of them is showing up in actual context menu. Neither in Dolphin -> Settings -> Configure Dolphin -> Services for that matter. I tried to install them as normal user and as a root. I went to have a peak in /usr/share/kde4/services/ServiceMenus/ but they aren't there as well... It's just me or lots of things seems to be not quite working in 11.3?

Just installed 5.3/gnome.I am on pc/desktop with only wired internet connection via routerto dsl-modem. The OS sets-up the "eth0" automatically. For just this type of setup what services can I disable and uncheck ? In System>Admin.>Services I unchecked and disabled bluetooth, isdn, pcscd and sshd. Should I disable sendmail, avahi-daemon, portmap, rpcidmapd, rpcgssd and.apmd(no laptop)? Goal is to minimize unneeded services and improve security. The wiki article on securing CentOS did not cover this.Under System>Security Level Configuration I allow ftp,Mail(smtp), and WWW(HTTP). Is the ftp allowed ok for my pc/desktop?

I installed Centos 5.5 on a home PC to be used remotely.
All server daemons work fine but only start if the user is logged in.
How do I set the SSH server to start whenever the PC is turned on, rather than when the user is logged in? I read the chkconfig man page online but couldn't find anything.
Plus I put a script in my startup services to be run whenever the computer boots (I'm guessing when the users logs in). How do I go about setting that to run too whenever the system boots instead?

And are these reads sufficient to make drives spin up? I'm not sure what to look at next.

I am using smartd for monitoring disk's status and i am using smartmontools-5.39.1.tar.gz package for compilation. I am able to compile and run it on HP servers(redhat). Now,i need to execute it for IBM RAID SERVERS too on which compilation is done but i need to configure smartd.conf for them so as to monitor all existing disks. (only DEVICESCAN works in conf file). Rest devices to monitor(eg. ata, sda devices) don't work at all. it is possible in IBM raid servers and if yes, then what configurations should i use.

After upgrading Centos 5.4 cluster nodes to 5.5 all virtual services failed to start. All virtual services are marked as 'failed'. The reason: new /usr/share/cluster/vm.sh requires 'which', but this is not reflected in rgmanager-2.0.52-6.el5.centos.
Solution: run 'yum -y install which' on all nodes, and reboot cluster. Hope that will save somebody hours of downtime.

Having my Diploma Final Project on setting up a virtual mail server within Local Area Network (LAN) only. I had follow this how-to [URL] and complete up to squirrealmail web mail. I have problem while setting up user account on Thunderbird, Thunderbird seems like cannot detect my CentOS mail server. How? Do I have to do any other configuration on CentOS? Any DNS? Port number for IMAP, POP3 or SMTP?

On my CentOS 5.4 box I run dns, ssh, and smtp servers. This box also has to be able to resolve and browse websites. So basically it needs iptable rules for
TCP 22 25 80 443
UDP 53
My question is, which of these services work nicely with connection tracking? I'm a little confused about how connection tracking works. For example say this iptables rule for smtp
Code:
iptables -A INPUT -s 0/0 --sport 513:65535 -d $myip --dport 25 -j ACCEPT
versus
Code:
iptables -A INPUT -s 0/0 --sport 513:65535 -d $myip --dport 25 -m state --state NEW,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT
So with connection tracking what exactly does it do that my first iptables rule does not do?
Also for centos is that port range correct? 2.6 Linux kernel randomly chooses a port 513-65535 when it connects to an external smtp server or say browses a site.

I'm having some trouble understanding the smartd configuration options which go in /etc/smartd.conf. I've had smartd running for close to a year now, and read the manual page for smartd and smartd.conf several times, and I still can't get my head around it properly. This is what I use in smartd.conf:
/dev/sda -H -f -S on -o on -n standby,q
-s (O/../.././(00|06|12|18)|S/../.././11|L/../../(3|6)/21)
-m <nomailer> -M exec /usr/sbin/smartd_mailer
The above works fine (I use a custom script because I use exim). However, I had two failing hard-disks on two different machines (sector pending attribute) - but I would only receive warning emails if I restarted the machines - not when the periodic tests were being performed. I have a number of questions, if any of you would like to share some light on this:
1. It is not clear from the manual page how the monitoring and alerting mode works. Do I get an initial email when I start smartd if something is wrong, and then no other warning email after each scan, even if there is a fault, unless the fault goes worse?
2. Can I force it to send me warning emails after each test (offline, online, short, long etc.) if the fault condition is still there, even if it hasn't gotten worse?
3. There seem to be a variety of parameters monitored. I was thinking that if I monitor bad sectors, and the hdd temperature - it should be enough to warn me when the hard-disk is failing? Would the -a switch in smartd.conf cover these?
4. I don't understand the difference between monitoring and logging in relation to alerts? Do I get alerts only if I log things?
5. Do I understand correctly that the -p and -u switch would warn me of *any* changes in SMART attributes, even if they don't represent risk of failure?
6. Is there a way of finding out if the scheduled tests (offline, long, short etc.) have been performed?
