CentOS 5 Networking :: How To Set Gateway IP Address

I have a requirement of switch between wireless network with a single wireless device. First it should be switched to adhoc mode and then after sometime switch to infrastructure mode to establish internet connection. Everything works fine except the gateway settings.

I have used:
system("route add default gw x.x.x.x dev wlan0") to set the gateway, where x.x.x.x is gatewayip address.
I have used this whenever switching happens in addition to ifconfig command to set the ip address and netmask. But this is not setting the gateway ip address. How to set gateway IP address?

I would like to configure the eth0 manually. I can configure the ip address and sub-netmask but the system can't hold my gateway ip address (I added). It will keep it 0.0.0.0. I have no problem when I getting IP address from DHCP server.

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 and my setup is as follows:

As you can see, I am directly connected to router 192.168.25.1, and so my ip address is 192.168.25.101. I want my ip address to be 192.168.13.101, and make router 192.168.13.1 my gateway router. Is this possible under the current physical layout (I do not want to have to connect directly into 192.168.13.1, but keep my computer where it is at)?

When I run tracepath, it shows 192.168.13.1 is one hop away.

What I've tried:

The problem is under this manual setup, I cannot ping 192.168.13.1 and running command netstat -rn returns the following:

I have 17 system (sys1,sys2,sys3.....sys17) in my office, and i am willing to setup a dedicated system to act as a firewall for that i have selected sys1 with two NIC(eth0 for local network and eth1 for internet) and i have configured to access internet in my office for that i have opened a wellknown port 80.but my clients are not accessing the internet..

and please check my sample IP configuration !!!

my question is that which gateway address and dns i have to give to my clients for accessing internet ?...

Recently my motherboard went out, I replaced it and booted centos 5. All went well except sound, video tuners and netoworking. The sound I re-configured, and have gotten tuners working but I am running into trouble with the new network card. The networking setup is;

DSL wireless router/modem IP 192.168.0.1 connected to XP computer through WIFI IP 192.168.0.3. all set to subnetmask 255.255.255.0 and with DNS servers 192.168.0.1 and 205.171.3.25 the XP computer is the only one that supports my wifi card. On wired LAN I share that connection to 4 devices. 3/4 work well, my cent os 5 box will not connect. here are the lan settings:

win xp: IP 192.168.0.60 255.255.255.0
mac 8.6: IP 192.168.0.34 255.255.255.0
blueray: IP 192.168.0.65 255.255.255.0

CentOS 5 Networking :: Gateway Through Windows Computer?

And I'm currently working on a new CentOS 5 install I've made on a computer I've got.. So I'm now trying to get that computer to reach my home network through one of my other computers, which have got XP installed. I've configured the XP computer to act as a gateway from one network card to another, and It works with another XP pc, but no luck with my CentOS 5. I used this link [URL] And I configured the correct network card.

So.. the IP of the XP machine is 192.168.1.70, which I have set as a static. So that the CentOS will find it. And I've connected the (fully working) network cable correctly.

What do I have to do?

I have configured the CentOS to recieve an IP dynamically. (dhcp).. Might that be the problem? (well.. one of the problems.. I've tried to set it to static.. ...?)

Is there more to it than this? I mean when I'm working on communication through an XP machine... ?

My company hosts five Servers with CentOS 5 installed in a Data Center. The Data Center assigns a VLAN to each customer so that they can organize customers and also count traffic. The VLAN assigned to my company is in the form 62.103.X.X with a subnet mask 255.255.255.240 so the IPs that we can use in our Servers are 13. The first IP in the VLAN (for example 62.103.1.1) is the Gateway and the rest, that are calculated from the subnet mask, are assigned to servers(62.103.1.2 up to 62.103.1.14).

The problem I have is that we have run out of IPs in our VLAN. We have used all IPs and we want some more. The Data Center can assign new IPs but not grow our VLAN IPs by expanding the subnet mask. So they gave us a new VLAN with some IPs (for example 62.104.X.X with a subnet mask 255.255.255.192) They told me that I had to use as gateway the gateway of the first VLAN 62.103.1.1 and assign the new IPs as usual. So I assigned to one of the CentOS 5 servers the IP 62.104.1.2 and set the gateway to 62.103.1.1. Unfortunately this did not work and we could not establish connectivity to the Internet.Is it possible to assign a gateway outside of the IPs that are in the subnet? Could it be a problem with the VLAN setup by the Data Center?

I have an HP BL460c G5 with 5.3 installed fresh

it can ping its own IP address just fine

its a bit slow but constant pinging the switch its connected to

and i get alot of Destination host unreachables(a few do get through) when pinging the gateway

port on the switch is hardcoded to GB/full. and the server itself reads that its connecting at GB/full.

The install actually seemed to go pretty smoothlyIt's a dell pentium4 with 128mbyes it installed textuallyI start the gui with 'startx'but the question I have is for the more experienced CentOS people.when I login as rootI am trying to figure out how to get my machine onto the internet.I had figured the OS would have NO problem with a Linksys 10/100 pci cardsince the OS has the latest drivers and all.The system reports the NIC as a "ADMtek NC100 ethernet" card (eth0)it also reports that the status is "ok"Now, I've seen the NIC when it's plugged into a hub (during the O/S install)and it DOES make the hub's light flicker when it tries to "talk" to it.but when I have it plugged into my Cable Modem (for internet) it's not doing anything.

During the install I SAW the NIC making the hub lights flicker... so I know the interface WAS doing "something".but nowwhen I go into the gui and I try the NetWork Admin , and I try to "activate" the card.Nothing.Am I NOT doing something that I SHOULD be doing?fconfig? (at the command line?) ifup? I would have thought I'd "activate" it with the gui ok...I'll keep poking around.I'm just a little surprised is all. I am having a problem getting a wireless network connection on my DELL laptop running CentOS 5. I have no problem getting a wireless connection when the laptop is booted in Windows XP. I also don't have a problem when booted under CentOS 5 and there is no authentication setup on the wireless router. I only have a problem when I setup authentication. The router wireless log shows the PC connectinng, authenticating, and succeeding authentication.I am using the Broadcom Hybrid-wl wireless driver.

I am a developer, not a network admin - sorry if this ia dumb question. I need to test an application on CentOS 55 64 bit. The instalation went fine and initially I let DHCP work its magic. The router IP address ia 192.168.0.1 and all other VM's I have are granted dynamic ip address on this range (i.e. 192.168.0.x). However, the CentOS vm got an IP address that looks like it belongs on a different subnet :192.168.1.1

The VM (vmware desktop) network setting for this VM uses "Bridged: Connected directly to the physical network". I can ping the host (Windows 7 64 bit) and the host can ping it (it been the VM) - but no other computer on the network can see it. To make things easier, I changed the network configuration to use a static IP address. Here are my configuration files:

/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0
DEVICE=eth0
BOOTPROTO=static

I was particulary suprised to have nothing in my logs regarding an IP address conflict in Linux compared to the windows and its popup !Did I miss something in the logs ? Or is there someting to configure to have it ?Otherwise can I do something to have the date in the dmesg log file ?Here my story about this problem :My linux machine was monitored by Nagios so i've seen some Up/down/up/down phenomene when I came to work this morning. I tried to figured out what's wrong browsing the logs (messages & dmesg & mail/root)... but nothing usefull so far...Then I hearded that a collegue booted a old Windows machine the day before. I checked this machine and there was the classic windows popup regarding a IP address conflict! So that was the problem, the Windows machine have the same IP than de Linux box.I was particulary suprised to have nothing in my logs regarding an IP address conflict in Linux compared to the windows and its popup !Did I miss something in the logs ? With virtualbox I do a test session to train myself with centos before I make big mistakes on my production server.I did take a harddiskfile vdi to another computer with virtual box. Now I have the problem that de MAC-address is changed.I can not get the mac adres anymore, becaus those computer is sold. How can i change the trust of the MAC-address in centos? Or must i change de MAC-address? If I may change the MAC-address, i must do that inside centos, end not inside virtualbox, if you understand me?

The install went fine but the only issues is getting the server on the network.

I can't ping any thing other that the ip address assigned to the server.


I did it through the gui , the command line and using ifconfig and editing the ifconfi-eth0 file and nothing works.

any ideas on how to get this to work.

i see nothing wrong in the messages.log file either.

CentOS 5 Networking :: DGE-530T Will Not Get IP Address From DHCP Server

I am attempting to get this network card running under CentOS 5.2 but have had no luck. Some sites say to use the sk98lin driver, others the skge, which I can't find at all. I have tried multiple versions of the driver in rpm but none seem to work. The card shows under the network manager but will not get an IP address from the DHCP server.

New to CentOS5.5 I'm experiencing some trouble in order to continue my configuration. I've just installed my vmware tools and configured my network card with system-config-network

Edit eth0 (eth0) - vmxnet3 -> with a static IP I rebooted my server and since then I lost my eth0. I still see it in system-config-network, but I can't active it anymore.:

/etc/init.d/network start Bringing up interface eth0: Device eth0 has different MAC address than expected, ignoring. [FAILED]
