CentOS 5 Networking :: Host Unreachable When Pinging Gateway?
Jan 13, 2010
I have an HP BL460c G5 with 5.3 installed fresh
it can ping its own IP address just fine
its a bit slow but constant pinging the switch its connected to
and i get alot of Destination host unreachables(a few do get through) when pinging the gateway
port on the switch is hardcoded to GB/full. and the server itself reads that its connecting at GB/full.

I have 5 1955 blades in an enclosure for an custom application cluster.All were running Centos 4.4 no problem.We wanted to start upgrading them cleanly to 5.5 so two of them got fresh installs of 5.5.The installs went well enough, no glaring errors.However they can only ping each other! The network settings are fine, no firewall or selinux. I'd run the info script but I can neither download it to them nor paste it in via kvm.Standard static entries, virtually identical to their 4.4 brethren. They ping each other so network drivers are fine, no built in switch configuration changes. It has to be some kind of network configuration issue that i'm just not seeing.
Edit* When i try and ping anything else, including the other blades, I get Destination Host Unreachable.

I had a router crap out yesterday. I'd been testing out a new one for the last few days and just reconfigured it to be the main. Took the old one down and everything in my house (Windows 7 PC, XP Files server, Ubuntu PC , windows 7 laptop, android tablet, ps3, etc) seems to be working fine whether it be hard wired or wifi. All except my ubuntu 10.04 laptop. It worked fine before the swap so I can't figure out what's going on.
I'm able to connect to the new SSID without issue but I can't resolve any external names and when I try to ping the default gate way every other packet has (DUP!) behind it. If I'm hardwired I don't get the dup! when pinging the default gateway but I still can't resolve any external names. I have provided the results of an ifconfig and the results of a ping to the default gateway below.
cooley@Quigon:~$ ping 192.168.1.1
PING 192.168.1.1 (192.168.1.1) 56(84) bytes of data.

64 bytes from 192.168.1.1: icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=3.04 ms (DUP!)
64 bytes from 192.168.1.1: icmp_seq=2 ttl=64 time=3.50 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.1.1: icmp_seq=2 ttl=64 time=5.72 ms (DUP!)

I have a problem with the Fedora 12 Network Manager - OpenVPN configuration. If I use the same configuration and manually start openvpn (as client) I get connected to the OpenVPN server and I can ping the network that I am accessing. With Network Manager - I get connected but when I try to ping is giving me "Destination host unreachable". The routing table looks similar except that when connecting with network manager is giving me on more route in table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx 192.168.0.1 255.255.255.255 UGH 0 0 0 wlan0
192.168.0.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 U 2 0 0 wlan0
192.168.171.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 U 0 0 0 tap0
0.0.0.0 192.168.0.1 0.0.0.0 UG 0 0 0 wlan0
Where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the IP of the OpenVPN server. When connecting "manually" I this routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface
192.168.0.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 U 2 0 0 wlan0
192.168.171.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 U 0 0 0 tap0
0.0.0.0 192.168.0.1 0.0.0.0 UG 0 0 0 wlan0
What I do wrong in Network Manager? If I try to delete the route with xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is disconnecting the vpn connection.

I've got a problem with 'seeing' other machines on my Network. I have two laptops both with F10 on them however I can't ping either of them. They can connect fine to the internet and ping the router, they are both on the same subnet with Firewalls disabled on both machines. When I try to ping it says: "Destination Host Unreachable". I've tried firing up Wireshark to see if that will give me any clue but even that doesn't show any packets whatsoever from the other machine across the Network. It's like they are completely invisible to each other.

I've set up bridged networking so that I can have KVM virtual machines that are accessible from outside the host. I can access both the Host and my VM from other machines on the local network, and from the VM I can access the internet but from the Host I can only access my local network. Since I can access the local network and the same issue applies regardless of whether I use host names or IP addresses I suspect it's not picking up the gateway properly.
How do I go about allowing the VM host to access the internet while still having bridged networking so I can access my VMs?
What I've checked so far:
Ping Google DNS (8.8.8.8 )
From Host: Destination Host Unreachable
From VM: Suceeds
[Code].....
The issues are only with accessing things outside of my subnet. I can access other machines on the same subnet from the Host just fine.

I cannot access/ping my Debian server. I know the IP is right (ifconfig, route and ip addr) all gave me 10.0.2.25 (route gave me 10.0.2.0).I cannot ping it from any computer in my netwerk, even when I try to ping it from my Debian itself, it gives me Destination Host Unreachable !(Wierdly, I can ping 10.0.2.2 tho).I am using virtualbox when the netwerk options 'NAT' turned on. When I look at my /etc/network/interfaces/ the last line looks like:iface eth0 inet dhcpShouldn't their be some other stuff listed?

I installed openSUSE on one of my work system. The network port wasn't working when I was installing, but works fine now (checked in Windows). But for some reason, I am not able to configure the network. I used both Dynamic and Static IPs (both work fine in Windows) but still no go. I am using Yast Control Center for this purpose. I can't even ping the default gateway when I am using custom settings. When I use dynamic settings, it says Unreachable Network.

Recently my motherboard went out, I replaced it and booted centos 5. All went well except sound, video tuners and netoworking. The sound I re-configured, and have gotten tuners working but I am running into trouble with the new network card. The networking setup is;
DSL wireless router/modem IP 192.168.0.1 connected to XP computer through WIFI IP 192.168.0.3. all set to subnetmask 255.255.255.0 and with DNS servers 192.168.0.1 and 205.171.3.25 the XP computer is the only one that supports my wifi card. On wired LAN I share that connection to 4 devices. 3/4 work well, my cent os 5 box will not connect. here are the lan settings:
win xp: IP 192.168.0.60 255.255.255.0
mac 8.6: IP 192.168.0.34 255.255.255.0

I have a requirement of switch between wireless network with a single wireless device. First it should be switched to adhoc mode and then after sometime switch to infrastructure mode to establish internet connection. Everything works fine except the gateway settings.
I have used:
system("route add default gw x.x.x.x dev wlan0") to set the gateway, where x.x.x.x is gatewayip address.
I have used this whenever switching happens in addition to ifconfig command to set the ip address and netmask. But this is not setting the gateway ip address. How to set gateway IP address?
System details below
OS :CentoS 5.3
Kernel :2.6.18

And I'm currently working on a new CentOS 5 install I've made on a computer I've got.. So I'm now trying to get that computer to reach my home network through one of my other computers, which have got XP installed. I've configured the XP computer to act as a gateway from one network card to another, and It works with another XP pc, but no luck with my CentOS 5. I used this link [URL] And I configured the correct network card.
So.. the IP of the XP machine is 192.168.1.70, which I have set as a static. So that the CentOS will find it. And I've connected the (fully working) network cable correctly.
What do I have to do?
I have configured the CentOS to recieve an IP dynamically. (dhcp).. Might that be the problem? (well.. one of the problems.. I've tried to set it to static.. ...?)
Is there more to it than this? I mean when I'm working on communication through an XP machine... ?

My company hosts five Servers with CentOS 5 installed in a Data Center. The Data Center assigns a VLAN to each customer so that they can organize customers and also count traffic. The VLAN assigned to my company is in the form 62.103.X.X with a subnet mask 255.255.255.240 so the IPs that we can use in our Servers are 13. The first IP in the VLAN (for example 62.103.1.1) is the Gateway and the rest, that are calculated from the subnet mask, are assigned to servers(62.103.1.2 up to 62.103.1.14).
The problem I have is that we have run out of IPs in our VLAN. We have used all IPs and we want some more. The Data Center can assign new IPs but not grow our VLAN IPs by expanding the subnet mask. So they gave us a new VLAN with some IPs (for example 62.104.X.X with a subnet mask 255.255.255.192) They told me that I had to use as gateway the gateway of the first VLAN 62.103.1.1 and assign the new IPs as usual. So I assigned to one of the CentOS 5 servers the IP 62.104.1.2 and set the gateway to 62.103.1.1. Unfortunately this did not work and we could not establish connectivity to the Internet.Is it possible to assign a gateway outside of the IPs that are in the subnet? Could it be a problem with the VLAN setup by the Data Center?

The install actually seemed to go pretty smoothlyIt's a dell pentium4 with 128mbyes it installed textuallyI start the gui with 'startx'but the question I have is for the more experienced CentOS people.when I login as rootI am trying to figure out how to get my machine onto the internet.I had figured the OS would have NO problem with a Linksys 10/100 pci cardsince the OS has the latest drivers and all.The system reports the NIC as a "ADMtek NC100 ethernet" card (eth0)it also reports that the status is "ok"Now, I've seen the NIC when it's plugged into a hub (during the O/S install)and it DOES make the hub's light flicker when it tries to "talk" to it.but when I have it plugged into my Cable Modem (for internet) it's not doing anything.
During the install I SAW the NIC making the hub lights flicker... so I know the interface WAS doing "something".but nowwhen I go into the gui and I try the NetWork Admin , and I try to "activate" the card.Nothing.Am I NOT doing something that I SHOULD be doing?fconfig? (at the command line?) ifup? I would have thought I'd "activate" it with the gui ok...I'll keep poking around.I'm just a little surprised is all. Ubuntu 8.1 had no problem "discovering" and using a wireless Linksys cardTHIS operating system is even newer

I was doing some one-handed-one-fingered typing while talking on the phone. Due to lack of paying attention, I executed the following command: ifconfig eth0 1300 (was meant to be ifconfig eth0 mtu 1300) this of course killed the connection, so I got the box rebooted. This box functions as an openswan/firewall server. everything came up okay, end users are reporting no problems with the vpn or the firewall function. However, one service is failing because the route to localhost seems to be originating from eth0. when I `ping localhost`, the traffic dump shows the ping packet originating from the external address. On all my other boxes, when I ping localhost, the traffic originates from localhost. The reply to my ping behaves normally.
here is a dump of my pinging localhost: fw-ps:~/scripts# tcpdump -n -i lo listening on lo, link-type EN10MB (Ethernet), capture size 65535 bytes 10:00:01.885033 IP 194.246.23.22 > 127.0.0.1: ICMP echo request, id 6893, seq 12, length 64 10:00:01.885068 IP 127.0.0.1 > 127.0.0.1: ICMP echo reply, id 6893, seq 12, length 64
I considered trying to manually add some routes, but since the reply is working, I am not sure that is the problem. I also considered trying to change the default interface, but I don't want external traffic originating from the loopback.

I have a CentOS5 box here (actually running the latest release of EasyIDS). Everything was working fine for about half an hour, and now I can't access the box through a web browser on it's IP address. I can't ping the box either. If I log on to the server, I can ping other boxes on the network and external resources, but nothing seems to be able to see it. I checked to make sure HTTPD is running, and it is. The firewall is not running (or at least that's what it says when I do service --status-all).

I'm using kubuntu 9.10 desktop edition as a server and I set the IP statically, what happens is that when I ping it from another machine on the same network, I get intermittent packet loss (up to 80% and sometimes even higher). When I ping any other machine on the local network everything's fine with 0% packet loss. Packets go directly through switch, no router or anything in between.
I suspected wiring issues, but that doesn't seem to be the problem after I changed the wiring. I was connected to wireless and suspected that but no go either. Same thing when I turn wired. I just changed the ethernet card suspecting drivers but that's no good either. Iptables is a cleanslate installation, it's totally empty.

I have two network interfaces and their entries are shown as eth0 and eth1... I want to assign them static IPs which I do by
ifconfig eth0 192.168.9.245 netmask 255.255.0.0 up
ifconfig eth1 192.168.8.245 netmask 255.255.0.0 up
But I am not sure if it will ping both the interfaces if I issue a command
ping -I eth0 192.168.9.113 (machine in network)
ping -I eth1 192.168.9.113 (machine in network)
I am getting pings from eth0 but not from eth1

So I've been reading around a bit, and have found a few fixes for this Resolving Hosts problem, but none of them have fixed mine yet. Basically what happens is all browsers fail to load pages, pinging local network works, but pinging default gateway doesn't. Cannot ping external websites and cannot reach update or upgrade servers for ubuntu. All networking works as normal on all other PCs in house, as well as the windows 7 boot I have on my ubuntu PC.
What I've tried:Disabled IPv6 completely by preventing the module from booting up Manually setting network settings instead of using the router's DHCP server Changing DNS servers from ISP to Google public DNS to OpenDNS Buying a new ethernet card And a few other things I can't remember off the top of my head, none of which worked. From memory, all this just started happening out of the blue. I recently changed from Windows to Ubuntu, and was enjoying the switch but all of a sudden I couldn't get on the internet on Ubuntu.
Now, I'm not sure why, but I decided to ping myself. Not my LAN ip, but our router's WAN ip. It worked, albeit took a little while to return a response the first packet, but each subsequent packet after that was a normal speed (~0.5ms). The strange thing about this was that I found that for a few seconds after pinging myself, I could access the internet. After a few seconds though, it returns to it's resolving hosts self again, which another self-ping would fix.
Consequently, in order to browse, I have an open terminal constantly pinging myself which appears to be working. Not ideal, and certainly not something I would like to keep doing for long, but it works for now. I really like Ubuntu, but if I can't get this net thing fixed, I can't finish moving over from Windows!

* I've altered HOSTNAME variable in /etc/sysconfig/network
* I've created a file called /etc/hostname with the new name
* I've modified /etc/hosts
* I've written the new name to /proc/sys/kernel/hostname
* I've used sysctl -w kernel.hostname=NEWNAME
* I've run hostname NEWNAME
and yet after reboot the name remains localhost.localdomain

I'm setting up apache on centOS 5.5 and administering it from another host on my LAN(this web server has no Xorg). I can ping from the config host to the web server but not the other way. Redirecting messages was easy, but now I'm having difficulties to redirect those same messages received from Linksys to a separate log file. By default, all these messages are logged to /var/log/messages, and after browsing manual pages for syslog, syslog.conf, and syslogd, came to suspect that what I want isn't possible.
